I feel the need to have one of these myself. Not really because everyone else does Well okay that might factor into it a bit but because I kinda need feedback on my quests in general. It feels somewhat as if I am a small sapling in a forest full of great old oaks, and I cannot grow for all the talent that surrounds me! Not that I dislike any of our big quest rockstars, or anything, it's not their fault.

Oh, and discuss stuff about my quests here too, I guess. So...

- Links
- Bardic
- G A C vs R A M
- Amalgam
- Hatquest and its sequels
- Fury Rising

And stuff. Feel free to ask questions, too, if anything is bothering you.

This is the closest I can get to how well I draw with pencil and paper.

God, I need a tablet and a better program.

So bad

Yes you do, specifically something with layers, an 'undo' function and a tablet. I can't draw shit without a tablet, and my drawing are pretty sketchy with them (took me 3 months to realize what the hell layers should be used for, I was just using a paintbucket.)

Also, as practice find a picture of a real person doing a real thing and try to replicate it with it right next to your pic. I find that does wonders as form practice, helps you to start 'getting' how the human body moves.

To those it may concern, I'll be taking a break from IRC until... uh, let's just say until I feel better.

This is it.

I'm done.

I've tried, and tried, and spent hours on storylines that no one wants to advance. I've typed hundreds of updates, 'drawn' dozens.... but it feels as if I'm doing nothing at all. I've asked for feedback, and no one gave it. I asked for help, and no one cared.

I'm done trying, done failing. Starting today, all of my quests save RAM vs GAC will be cancelled, and there are no plans to start any new ones.

Happy birthday, me.

Happy birthday.

Can't comment. Give me a summary of your favorite quest of yours that nobody posts in.

Link me some fanart of Gearheads.
Or maybe more than one piece from any of my quests, ever.

How about any update that had more than three replies?

Maybe the 'deluge' of assistance and advice in this thread?

Ok shot, here is my opinion.

You have a very creative mind, and you generate very interesting base ideas for quests (necromantic thief/doctor, bard guy that can use music we give him, Mech battles).

However, most of the ideas you come up with are more suited for 'light' quests or semi-serious quests.

Hat quest was one of these, you moved from a light idea to a serious business quest. The transition went well in this case because of the general underlying theme and because it seemed to come as a natural progression of events.

In Bardic and Gears, however, it seemed (to me)sort of forced, or sudden(possibly because I had not been following them from the start as I had with Hat quest).

I suppose the reason I focus on the shift is because after the shift, if not done properly, the quest I'm following is not the quest I was attracted to.

I am not saying that you can't have the shift, it has been done by several authors before. A recent example would be 'Zero the Pixelfag' or ZTP, who began a 'sprite illustrated strategy game' style quest that changed greatly in terms of execution. However though this was changed, it was not a completely unexpected change as several hints were given from the main characters exposition, thus a underlying theme was developed, which made the transition easier to stomach.

I have a great deal of respect for you as a quest author and a poster. You have shown levels of maturity, intelligence and dedication that I appreciate.
I admire your work and I hope that you continue to grow so that we all (you included) can continue to enjoy it.

My opinion, sorry bout the wall.

See, this is the kind of help I needed.

Frankly, I only have a few ways to gauge interest in my threads.

*Discussion here.

*Fanart.

*Discussion in IRC.

*Posts inthread.

When these dry up, or slow down, it is very easy for me to think no one cares. A hundred people may read the quest, but if there is but one reply, it will look to me as if one person is reading it.

For a long time now, I've had an idea in my head to start a new quest in Avalon (the Hatquest setting) based on the creation of magical items, since it's something I glossed over entirely. (While Artemis could make them, it was only temporary)

However, I've sworn off text quests, which is the only medium I can use in Avalon for both fluff reasons and for the fact that that's how it started and the only way I can imagine it.

So meh.

Maybe I'll start again, later, but not now, and not without signs that this wouldn't happen again.

Well, just saying, for me even if I don't have too many suggesters I can still move forwards, only for while I pick up all the storytelling slack until I get to a part people are interested in. So far, the trend has been more player-interactive parts like battles and template construction, which is okay with me.

You sound like you make a lot of stuff for your quest, most of which never gets used. If nobody's replying, move the quest forward in such a way as to satisfy both you and any possible lurkers, and move to a point that you think people'd be interested in.

Kind of a fundamental rule of quests, to keep stuff flowing, but yeah.

And if you're having trouble with serious quests, try some light quests like Falcon said, with less fluff and more interaction- a quest like Hatquest but minus character development and focused completely around player creativity in application of magical items would be something I'd be really interested in reading, as an example.

I really hope you succeed whenever you return to making quests- I really liked your quests but never really could think of anything pertinent to the storyline to suggest.

Obtain windows XP. Order a small bamboo tablet. Costs ~70 USD. Factory refurbished runs as low as 50.
http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-CTH460-Bamboo-Factory-Refurbished/dp/B003LVKQ18

While you wait for it to arrive, (or just go to Best Buy) install Windows and then spend one hour a day, every day, (doesn't have to be all at once) drawing with a pencil. Continue practicing for at least 20 minutes a day until you stop sucking at it.

You've been fighting with your medium and your worthless OS for a year and a half. You coulda learned to draw in a year and a half.

Quit making excuses. You can afford food, electricity, and the internet. You can afford a tablet.

PS: To improve your writing, read good books. The most important thing for a writer is to practice, and the second most important is to read. If you have time and patience, read bad books, too. Figure out what about them pisses you off so you can avoid it.

>You can afford food, electricity, and the internet.
NOPE.
I live with some good people who are putting me up until I finish school. In exchange for room, board, and 'net, I clean up after them. So no. I can't afford any of these things. Getting a job around here is like slaughtering wild bears with bare hands...

Furthermore, I have windows, but not a working disc drive. I'm actually very close to having windows back, expecting it this xmas.

Thanks for the advice anyway :V. Any recommendations, either way? There happens to be a handy-dandy library nearby.

I know, it's terribly frustrating.

I'm not that big on fantasy, but my favorite fantasy author is probably Robert E Howard. He wrote during the great depression. Came up with Conan the Cimmerian. Real fire in his prose. Not the best for making some big amazing plot, but just really great imagery. Concise and vivid.

If text quest guys could write fantasy prose like REH, you probably wouldn't suffer for writers. And it's hardly crazy to compare him to amateurs. The guy didn't spend half a century on linguistics before carefully hand crafting a masterwork over a decade. He churned out stories a chapter at a time for pulp magazines and died at twenty nine.

As far as big plot shit goes, my favorite fantasy series is A Song of Ice and Fire, by George RR Martin. I just hope the fat fucker actually finishes it.

>I know, it's terribly frustrating.
Pencil. Paper. Make it happen. I've got no sympathy if you're making no effort to improve.

Brom, EdPastry, and LonelyWorld do their shit with a mouse. It's just that you have to learn how to draw in order for mouse art to look decent. Therefore, you should learn how to draw.

>Furthermore, I have windows, but not a working disc drive.
You're using a computer in order to type to me. You should put windows on it.

Hell, at least install The GIMP. It may be terrible, but it's less terrible than GNU's knockoff of MS Paint.

Or WINE and openCanvas, if you're truly desperate. Supposedly it works.
