Well now I've been playing Mount & Blade recently so...

I would take an awl pike, a spiked mace and a dagger. For the shield I would take a longer V/U shaped shield for that extra leg protection that is fully useable on horseback, but not too small for infantry or siege use.

For armor several layers of chainmail, possibly a chain coat with a steel breastplate and plate helmet with chain neck protection. Plate greaves to cover the front and outside of the legs. Steel plated leather gauntlets.

Horse gets to be clad in chain and a bit of plate too.

Depends on the timeframe I guess. If we can go high medieval then I would suggest a full suit of finest made Italian plate armour, helmet comes along with that. Shield, we won't need one with that armour.

Weapons, naturally a lance, a longsword as well possibly something like the talhoffer style for extra stabbity goodness, a hefty dagger to use if we get unhorsed and pushed into the grappling of melee and of course a warhammer, not as long as a lucrene one, but similar in style that can be used from horseback.

With this gear we would be the lords of the battlefield, if it wasn't for those damn cocky swiss pikemen. But just hit those fucks in the flanks and they will crumble as any peasant will when faced with proper knights. And the armour would protect against most melee and range attacks. Over range longbow and crossbow arrows will just skid off our sloped armour, it's pretty much impervious to cutting, stabbing only works at the joints or the small holes for vision. Warhammers and warpicks along with lances getting in a good hit would pretty much be the only thing to worry about in melee. That and getting unhorsed in a mass of unwashed peasants with daggers.

Those look great, but at the period they were developed gunpowder weapons began to make their way into everyday warfare en masse.

In the quest, will we face the wall of pikes, halberds and early arquebuses of professional mercenaries or still the drafted rag-tag rabble of the medieval periods that called itself infantry?

In case of the former, a good, expensive pair of pistols would augment our offensive capabilities.

These things are very much mobile. You can do alot of acrobatics in one of those if you have the training for it, which you will have if you're a knight. Since a knight will have been training in armour since they were about 11 years old.

This is about a single knight running about, even if you were to engage a bloody army, there wouldn't be just you, unless you want to end the quest very very quickly.

Armor is always a matter of mobility vs protection.
A horse helps a lot to get around though.
Gunpowder weapons aren't around yet in this setting.
Please also concider that a knight has to be inspiring, and therefor look pretty, I appriciate you all looking up and posting the best armors you can find, but sometimes you might want mobility, or to look damn good while youre ordering filthy peasants around. :3

The weight will still make you travel slower, and although it shouldn't be very restrictive in combat, it will still be impracticle in other situations.

In contrast to mail shirts, plate armour is also surprisingly comfortable to wear.

Both mail and plate can be up to 60+ lbs, but while the most weight of mail armour lies on the wearer's shoulders (hanging down to his feet), the different parts of plate armour are attached to the forearms, legs etc.

So with plate armour, the user will have better protection and won't exhaust as fast.

You don't have to wear all of it all the time. A full set is hot as fucking hell, and it doesn't have a very good ventilation. The breastplate along with the thigh protectors and a helmet doesn't really weigh alot more than a military backpack would and it should give enough protection to handle most things.

As said, a knight is going to have trained in wearing these things since they were kids. They will have been well feed and have had quite a high protein diet. They will come from a family more or less breed for being able to be knights. They will be very much used to the weight and they will have a horse that is just as used to the weight and has been breed specifically for being able to have a knight on its back. It's not going to slow down a trained knight very much unless he has to go through alot of mud.

By the way would we get a squire? Being a knight isn't really practical unless you have one of those around.

Let's see how far we can push you with our entourage:

An older squire (~14-16 years) near the end of his education (so he will have picked up some fighting skills along with court manners and minnesong).

A young knave (~12 years), who will mostly carry our lance/shield/heraldy.

One or two sumpter horses and a servant to look after them? (Ha, I know this is pushing it).


Three equipment suggestions for the squire:

Standard: Like a knight, but less heavy.
A warhorse without armor.
A sword.
A shield.
A spear.
Long mail shirt.

Support: Useless alone, but shines alongside us and protects our back. Also escorts our prisoners from the front.
A sturdy horse.
A sword.
A mace or other blunt weapon.
A large shield.
Mail shirt with (cheap) partial plate.

Exotic: Uncommonly light equipment, but the variety may help.
Unarmored, fast horse.
A sword.
Javelins.
Pickaxe.
Dagger.
Small shield.
Leather jerkin.

Heh, it was meant as an inspiration. The thing is not really medieval anyways, more like early 19th century...

Well, early medieval age used fairly simple heraldry, a halfed shield with two different colours etc. (for the lesser nobles anyway)

Later, the symbols got more complicated. Depending on when your quest will take place and what social status your protagonist will have, you can try different stuff.

An animal or animal head is of course the perfect stereotype. Add some stripes or a checkerboard as background and off you go.

As for your quest's knight, I would suggest something easily recognisable and easy to draw. Let's say a tower (like the ones from chess) with easy geometry so it doesn't steal your time.
Left half black on white, right half white on black. Or top/bottom or something like that.
