You stifle your curiosity about the mayor’s underwear, and also magical ritual.

The question is, what are you going to do with your night? Part of you just wants to go to bed and wake up as quickly as possible, but you know it’s probably not realistic to think that you will be able to sleep.

You and Ramona go back to the Plath House. You both shower (separately) and put on pajamas for the evening. Ramona pours herself another drink, sits down, and resumes reading her book. You sit down on the sofa across from her.

You: “That was an ordeal. I’m bushed.”

Ramona: “Mmhm.”

You: “What do you think she’s doing at that ritual?”

Ramona: “Hm? Mhm…”

You: “Still determined to keep me out of that boudoir?”

Ramona looks up.

Ramona: “What? Oh…”

Ramona: “It’s really not a place you’d want to see.”

Ask her if she ever went through the old letters in the attic. Sally and you had an explore up there once, and you found a letter that might be relevant to the whole Stark-Plath thing. Say you'd like her permission to snoop around a bit more; even if all goes well and Marcie's back right as rain tomorrow, the spookiness around town's still going to be a threat, and you want to know all you potentially can about it. Maybe there's a long-term solution buried somewhere, and it'd be good to see the town safe before... before too long.

You: “Alright”

You: “Now you sound just like Susanna.”

Ramona: “I do not!”

You: “Yeah y’do. Tellin’ me what I need to know and shit.”

Ramona: “Do I need to remind you that I’m your landlord?”

Ramona: “And your rent is due today. It's Friday.”

You: “Yyyyyes”

You: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to talk to you like that. I…”

You: “Still want to see that room, though. You promised no more secrets and lies.”

Ramona: “Yes… yes. I’m sorry, dear. I’ll… I’ll show you.”

Ramona walks you over to the boudoir door. There’s no light shining through the keyhole, or out from under the door like before. She unlocks it and pulls it open. The hinges are so set in place from lack of use that they scream and groan. The wood creaks, and a peculiar smell wafts out into the hall.

Inside the room looks like it looked typical at one point. Luxurious mahogany bookshelves, intricate wall molding, and artifacts seemingly from around the world. The ceiling looks to be completely burned through, and the sky is visible through some shoddily restored, temporary rafters. Central to the room are the remains of what was once a dark blue sofa. The floor is covered in ash.

You: “What… the hell.”

Ramona: “There was a fire in here long before I was born. One of the Plath uncles fell asleep smoking a pipe.”

You: “Shouldn’t somebody… you know… fix it?”

Ramona: “Oh… I suppose. It’s been the subject of debate and procrastination. Generations of Plaths avoided entering here because… well… the dead man’s ashes are mixed in with the ones on the floor.”

You jump back onto the entry step in disgust.

Tell her about the glow you saw. This room is haunted. Maybe we can meet the ghost here tonight? Also I bet that safe key is in this room.

Weren't we supposed to be on the lookout for a blue sofa at one point? Does anyone remember?

You: “You can’t tell me there are no plans to get the roof fixed.”

Ramona: “Well… I’m sure there were at some point. Ed said he would do it a few times, but nothing came of that…”

Ramona: “It’s just a dreadful, dreadful old room. I’ve kept it sealed away all these years.”

You: “Do you think it’s haunted?”

Ramona: “If what you say about the attic is true then… maybe?”

Ramona: “Not sure if you’re afraid of a grouchy old uncle.”

You: “Speaking of the attic, have you ever gone up there and looked around yourself?”

Ramona: “Not for years. Back before Sally was born, Ed always talked about having a rummage sale.”

Ramona: “I could never let go of any of that stuff, even though I don’t know what all is up there. Ha!”

You take a look through the room, examining the couch first. It was definitely a blue couch, and it is badly burned. The surrounding floor and the ceiling directly above were also destroyed. The floor is moldy and marred from rain damage, but is currently dry. The hole in the ceiling seems to reflect that this room extends to a lower level than the main roof. If you had looked around the roof toward the rear of the house, you would undoubtedly have seen it - or more likely fallen in.

The bookshelf contains a number of old novels with a single rough-bound portfolio wedged in the middle. You grab it and open it up to see that it is primarily handwritten with some simple diagrams. You flip through the pages of what looks to be a cookbook entitled Draughts and Tinctures, Botanical.

You: “Woah”

You: “Haha, hey Ramona, this book has the recipe for reveyee in it!”

You: “Looootta stuff about gin in here, too.”

Ramona: “What…?”

Ramona: “Let me see that.”

She takes the book and begins flipping through it herself.

Ramona: “Well I’ll be gosh darned…”

You briefly examine the globe. It’s one of those 19th-century-ass beige-ass globes where all the fuckin’ countries are spelled wrong and the map looks like a kid sneezed some half-chewed Playdough onto an old vase. Other than that, there is nothing remarkable about it. There is no indication that it opens up, or even detaches from its axis.

You: “Ramona, what year is it?”

Ramona: “What year is it? That’s a weird question.”

Ramona: “It’s…”

Ramona becomes anxious.

Ramona: “Well… Ed and I got married in…”

Ramona: “U-uh…”

Ramona: “Is my memory goin’?”

You: “No, that’s… I wanna say normal.”

You: “No one in town knows what year it is. I don’t even remember what year it was when I got here.”

Ramona: “Well, dear… that has the whiff of magic.”

Ramona: “Oh dear… 19… no, it was…”

Ramona: “I am going to go to bed and read through this old potion book. Maybe I can find something useful.”

This seems like a good idea as well, if Ramona is up for it. Mention that the mayor would presumably be occupied.

Also, if the mayor is telling the truth about "sin" attracting these critters, then we need to strike a further deal with her. It's obvious that, if that's true, the very thing we most want will put people in danger; that makes it our mortal nemesis. We've come to like some of these people, and like to come in all of these people, and these monsters are threatening both.

So, assuming the mayor follows through, and we get invited to "see" her afterward, talk to her first about exactly what's going on (including Marcie, we really do want to know even if it's disturbing), and then tell her we'll do whatever it takes to stop what's attacking the town. Price to be discussed later.

Hey, Ramona, if you can't remember what year it is, and we know Layla should be in her 70's from OUR minimal outside world knowledge, do you think the Reveree is allowing you to age and get sick of cancer outside of Susanna's time bubble? That it's allowed the whole Plath family to grow and age within Coxwette, even leave it, while everyone else stays the same and is stuck here?

You turn to tell Ramona what you think about the year and the reveyee. It seems to make sense to you! When you look, she has already left for bed.

Now that she’s gone, you start rifling through the couch remains looking for a key. For some reason, you are so convinced that it is there. You find: couch ashes and a few mold spots. Nothing of interest.

As for returning to the mayor tonight, it is getting late now. Normally you’d be all for sneaking out past curfew, but you are pretty sure that you are the one Layla is going to be specifically looking for after she has returned form the Marce-hunt. You’re also pretty exhausted and stressed thinking about what could possibly happen the following morning.

At least it’s fuckin Friday.

Alright, I guess... check up on Sally, if she's here. If not we can go to the attic. We got a flashlight, so we can nose around a bit better. Also if Lorraine shows up again we know where the letter is and can read it.

Let's see those "artifacts seemingly from around the world". Also, check if any of the floorboards don't fit like the others do. Other hiding-type spots. Worst case scenario you get so exhausted that you do actually fall asleep.

Oh, and this is an old house, right? With those really thick, solid door frames? Maybe you should check if anyone left keys resting up on top of those.

To your tremendous disappointment, a relatively exhaustive search of the boudoir yields little interesting results. The worldly artifacts were mostly things like Amazonian tribal masks, wooden pipes, some kind of curved knife, an old stopwatch…

> You think Ramona would be fine with you taking the picture and letter as long as she actually doesn’t know you did it.
No Chuck, you already had that talk: No more lies, no more secrets!

I wasn't planning on it.
Just because it's Magic doesn't mean it's omnipotent.

There's another possibility: she was stolen back from wherever she went, but in the process lost a bunch of memories.

This does seem to be the most likely scenario, in any case. It seems likely that in order to recover and save her, after she was quite possibly traumatized but whatever these abominations are, she had to have memories excised.

It's not great. But things will be okay, I think. It's just gonna take some time. Penny might help maybe.

The fact no-one is here making a fuss over Marcie being back suggests other people's memories got rest too. So yeah, bullshit.

We better not. Like it or not, she appears to be part of what's keeping this town safe, and we don't actually know what happened here yet. We can loathe her guts for taking Marcie's memories and look for answers, though. That's perfectly fair.

"Appears" being the operative word and appearances can be deceiving. This...not-Marcie is the proof of that. And that Susanna cares only about appearances when it comes to people.

Obviously you should start spouting all the details you learned about her during your time here. As cruel as it might be to smack a cheery kitty with reality, it must be done.
