in a secluded forest stands a small convent. in that convent lives a young Gargoyle nun named Opal. Opal does her nightly duties on a rainy summer night. as she sweeps the entry hall, a small sound wakes her from her daydreams. a tiny rapping upon the church door.

when she checks outside, a small basket lays on the rainslick steps. in the basket, lays a sleeping baby.

choose a race and gender!

GARGOYLES: stout of body, stout of soul. gargoyles are as unmovable as the mountains.

MURDERSCRUBS: Death begins, death ends. Murderscrubs are masters of the fine art of killing.

FURIES: anger within, fury without. Furies burn with a righteous and uncontrolled rage.

ZENLINGS: fleet of foot, fleet of mind. Zenlings move like a cold breeze, and strike like a sandstorm.

15 years later, a young Zenling maiden sits in a quiet tavern. like every Zenling before her, she caught a terminal case of wanderlust. she said her farewells to the nuns who raised her and set off to seek her fortune.

that was about a month ago, and now she's sitting here in this tavern, less than 10 miles from the convent. she realizes she has no idea how to adventure. how do you even start? shouldn't there be some mysterious old man in the corner of the room? or maybe a cursed amulet?

"this seat taken?" a Gargoyle sits down beside her with a drink so strong she can smell it from where she sits.

"no, go ahead." the Zenling replies, "what're you drinking?"

"Krude." the Goyle grunts, "it's the only thing strong enough for what I need."

"are you celebrating something?" the Zenling asks.

"Mourning, more like." she replies, before taking a hard swig of the thick concoction. "the name's Ruby, by the way."

she nods, "well it was nice to meet you, but I must be going now. I have some... unfinished business to attend to."

Well the gargoyle you just met was a mysterious older person. With unfinished business. Maybe following her is an adventure hook? I mean, it is a little odd for her to come up, offer introductions, and then immediately leave.

What are you carrying? What skills do you have? You might not be suited to solo dungeon delving until you learn a thing or two and scrape together equipment.

Failing anything else, you could scout the local quest board for something that looks doable.

...maybe you should have asked one of the nuns for advice. Were any of them once the adventuring party healer type?
>>

well other then someone coming to them to grab them from a job I sometimes heard adventures lesion in on rumors going around and cherry pick the ones that actually sound like it could lead towards adventure and cash. That or just wonder around and hope to get lucky and run into something.

Maybe you should wonder after Ruby, it sounds like she's going somewhere and hopefully somewhere where we can get this adventuring thing started.

>What are you carrying? What skills do you have?

Ritz isn't particularly worldly. in truth she's never ventured past the forest around this sleepy town, but as a child she spent quite a lot of time exploring the woods, so she's quite quick on her feet and has a strong sense of direction. she only has what she had when she left the nunnery. mother Opal gave her enough food for a few weeks and as much money as the church could spare, 52 gelt. it's not much but she can maybe get some equipment at the trader. he should be open right now.

>maybe you should have asked one of the nuns for advice. Were any of them once the adventuring party healer type?

Mother Opal said she used to travel with a tough crowd, but she never told Ritz much about her life before she joined the church

>follow the Gargoyle you dipshit.

unfinished business? that sounds like a quest hook! Ritz darts to the door and into the cool autumn air of the hamlet. she looks around quickly, but it seems that Ruby has moved on. the street is mostly empty, except for a few townsfolk going about their business.

"hey did anybody see a brooding gargoyle walk by?"

"yes. we're all brooding Gargoyles. that's just a thing gargoyles do."

"this one was a woman with a big coat and hat."

"yes. we all- how long have you lived here?"

Ritz sighs. she could look for Ruby, the town is pretty small, or she can go around and ask if anybody needs some quests adventured, or she can check the town's bulletin board and see if there is something there, or she can go to the trader and buy things.

...or she can do something completely different.

Ritz decides to check the bounty board before she goes and spends all of her money on toys or goes off to get assaulted by spiders in the forest. she keeps an eye out for Ruby but there's no sign of her.

she scans the board...

twenty chinamen and a zeppelin requested for elaborate practical joke...

"excuse me?" Ritz replies, taken aback, "what are you implying? that I'm not good enough to go on a quest to defeat a sorceror."

"pfft." the Scrub looks Ritz up and down, "I'm not implying anything, kid. you're dressed like you're going to go out clubbing, you have no weapon, no equipment, and don't try to tell me you're some kind of caster. save yourself the trouble of a closed casket funeral and leave this to the professionals."

"well how am I supposed to get started, then? if I'm not good enough to beat up a Cobalt?"

This coming from someone who only comes up to my crotch, only wears armor on her lower half, you know the half without all of your vital organs, and honestly looks like a kid who just entered there brooding teenage stage and because she got her hands on some hand me down pieces of armor is a bona fide adventurer. Seriously you look like you should be more worried about getting home in time for curfew then hunting down anyone.

Also be prepared to dodge incase she tries to strike out at you. I mean with all the armor on her legs it's got to slow her down at least somewhat and you have a longer reach then she does so try to stay at the edge of your reach just incase she's the violent type.

"ok let's see here... brave and morally bankrupt warrior requested to slay a Cobalt mage. flexible pay, see kindly trader Bearscum Beefwax for details. do NOT contact me with unsolicited services or offers."

Mother Opal had always hoped to mold young Scarlet into a fine Guad fearing young lady; but unfortunately, like all Zenlings, she is wild and free spirited.

>What's wrong with Beefwax?
Ritz doesn't dislike Bearscum Beefwax, it's just that he's a bit... eccentric. it makes conversing with him an involved undertaking.

"hey Beefwax." Ritz waves the flyer in front of his face as she approaches, "you have a Cobalt problem?"

"congreetings susana. you noticed my advertissement." he mumbles, "I don't surmise a girl like you could denact my problems for me?"

"I'm not sure anybody can denact your problems, Bearscum, but I can get rid of the Cobalt."

"good on you Margarette." he murmurs.

"I was actually wondering, before I go fix this Cobalt issue, maybe you could give me an advance on some equipment?"

he nods, "hrm, I can arrave something like that."

"great!" Ritz beams, "let me see what you have for sale."

Ritz has 77 gelt to spend.

want to go against the armor since it would probably slow you down and right now you're best defense is not getting hit. Plus I don't think the armor would do jack shit against spells. Kinda want to get the crossbow but that's over half your money and I'm not sure on how good of a shot you are. Plus coblats are small so they're probably a bitch to hit at a good range.

I'm torn between getting two daggers and a healing potion or a sword, a dagger, and a healing potion. The first because I feel like you'd be better with knives then a sword but the second because I feel the sword would be more useful and with both you'd have a spare weapon.

Ah fuck it, go with the sword dagger combo with the healing potion thrown in. Daggers are cheap so it would be easier to buy on later if we ever decide to do that.

>isn't the point of an advance to spend some of the reward money now?
Ritz did in fact get a 25g advance.

Rits decides to buy the sword, dagger, and health potion. she also manages to haggle the crossbow down to a price she can afford. she has no more Gelt, but Bearscum tells her he will give her an other 100g after she brings him the Cobalt's headdress.

she checks the grips on the weapons; that's a thing that adventurers do, right? she can hold the sword and dagger in opposite hands and she thinks she can fight with both, but she;'s not completely sure. the cross bow seems pretty solid, as well. she tries to load it and with a bit of struggle, she can pull the string back and load a bolt. the sights seem fine, it's a pretty accurate weapon. Beefwax may be a bit unhinged, but he has good product.

Beeswax tells her that the Necromancer has a small hut in the forest about 5 miles north of town, and that he has a couple of thralls, maybe three.

if she leaves right away, she could reach the area where Beefwax thinks he is right after nightfall. should Ritz embark immediately, or should she wait until tomorrow morning? if she does, he may have moved on, but she'd rather not fight a Necromancer and a handful of revenants in the dark...

>Find some torches and set up a base of operations
Ritz would buy some torches but she used all of her money already.

Ritz is hesitant to go out, but she knows that if she waits, then she might not ever have a chance to catch this guy.

she skulks through the forest, trying to be as stealthy as possible, scared out of her mind. every noise in the forest sounds like a Revenant hiding in the underbrush, ready to slice her ankles. she tries to shake the feeling, but she can't help but freak herself out in the darkness of the woods.

as the moon begins to creep out from behind the trees, Ritz begins to hear a noise unlike the normal din of the woodland. it sounds like a crackling fire. she sees a glow from deep withing the brush.

"h-here's the place." she whispers, her heart beating out of its cage. no doubt the person tending that fire is the Necromancer. she sighs heavily, now that she's here, Ritz is terrified. she wants to get up and run away; to sprint back to the nunnery and into Mother Opal's arms. she can't do that, though. she can't go back, not yet; not without making something of herself. she couldn't look anyone in the eye if she came back a coward.

how should she do this?

It's just a Cobalt. See if you can sneak up closer, then rush it to put a dagger in its eye, using your speed to take it by surprise. If something bigger gets in the way you'll want to use the sword. Ritz lays down on the ground and approaches slowly, so slowly. she crawls through the underbrush as slowly as she can, doing her best to remain silent. with each foot, her terror grows. the glow appears to belong to the hut that Bearscum mentioned. outside, a Cobalt sits beside a campfire. his robe is bound tight to his body by a breastplate made from the bones of various creatures, and Ritz thinks some humanoid bones, as well. she looks around, but she can't see the revenants, but that doesn't matter. as soon as the Necromancer is put down, the revenants will just be corpses again.

the necromancer whirls around and with a sickening thud, the bolt spears his hand. no blood seeps from the wound.

"this is what I hate about you lifespings..." the Necromaner says in an even and calm tone, "you never have the courtesy to indulge me before you try to destroy that which you don't understand."

she hurriedly puts her crossbow away and goes to draw her sword.

her arms ceases to move, in fact, her entire body stands rigid, like a statue.

"I'm afraid I can't have you doing that." he approaches, and Ritz's heartbeat begins to hurt, like it's going to break out of her chest, "let me guess. you saw the posting on the bounty board. you thought, because of my birth race that it would be a simple matter to put me down, like some kind of animal."

he stands a scant meter from Ritz. she can smell rot. "well, here I am, hero. now's you chance to exterminate the Cobalt."

she doesn't care if everyone in town calls her a coward, or if she has to pay bearscum back for the advance, Ritz just wants to run, to sprint back to the Convent and to never come back to the forest, but her muscles refuse to move.

"uh... sure." Sakura follows the mother, while Ysmir takes Ritz to one of the guest rooms.

"you're Crawlers, right?" she asks.

Sakura nods, "just finished a job, actually. the kid did pretty well, for a rookie."

she smiles warmly.

"can I ask how you know her?" Sakura asks, as the Gargoyle hands her a steaming cup of tea.

"she's my daughter." she takes a long sip from the cup, "I used to be a Crawler, myself, you know."

"so she's sort of following in your footsteps, I suppose?" Sakura replies.

she sighs sadly, and keeps drinking, "how many Crawlers have you seen die on a job?"

Sakura doesn't answer.

"I don't want to bury my daughter." she sighs, "I'm tired of burying people I love."

Sakura awkwardly fidgets in her chair. neither of them speak for a while.

"I'm asking, one crawler to an other, please don't lead Scarlet into this life."

Truth be told I tried. Saw her green as grass looking for a job on the town's job board and tried to talk some since into her then and there. Her response, grab the job out of my hand and run before I could even say anything important. We just kinda bumped into each other during the job since we did take the same one after all. Now I could tell her to stop, try to tell her to look for something else but like most youths she's dumb as hell and stubborn as a rock... doubly so since she also a Zenling. She'd probably try and find another job as soon as I open my mouth just to prove me wrong. But if you want, maybe I could give her a few stories about jobs that didn't go so well... maybe you could to and tell her why you don't want her to be a crawler. Even if it doesn't work you'll at least give her an idea of what not to do.

Mother Opal let Ritz sleep in her bed for a few nights when she was younger, and after that, she just let Ritz have the master bedroom.

>just how fucked is your shirt?
it's pretty fucked. Ritz realizes that she's been showing off her underaged cleavage all night. it's fine. the sisters have seen all of that mess before, she thinks.

the Ludeling looks pretty cute asleep, so Ritz scratches her behind the ear, and she perks up immediately, her tail wagging happily.

"I think the Murderscrub took off in the night."

"no way." she beams, "she probably just went out for some breakfast!"

Ritz shrugs, not convinced.

"come on, let's go turn in that quest!" she smiles, "we can get some money for food, and then we can look for miss Kusaragi."

Maybe you should actually ask your parent about adventuring while you're here? Or at least sorcery. Not the church dogma- the practical side of things ie, how you deal with it / how dangerous it is. (Presented as how to deal with sorcerous baddies after your run in with the necromancer, hopefully hiding that you're trying to evaluate how crazy getting yourself involved would be).

Then yeah, we should hand in the job. If you see the scrub later you can split payment, since she saved your ass.

"good morning, Scarlet." she replies, "did you sleep well?"

"yeah." Ritz nods, then she coughs nervously, "so last night I uh... I met a sorceror. could you tell me anything about sorcery? you did say you used to travel and I was wondering if you knew anything about it..."

"Sorcery is the catch all term for multiple sciences devoted to using leylines in order to alter the material plane. there are Daemonologists, Necromancers, Elementalists, Enchanters, and Abjurers, among a few others."

"what about.. uhm... Necromancy?"

she looks back at Ritz for a moment, then goes back to the flowers, "Necromancy is... an unsavory science. they control life force, but not like a healer would. they steal life force from others and redistribute it."

she stands up, dusting off her smock, "if... if you're interested in learning more about the different sciences of magic, I can teach you a bit of healing magic. it would be very helpful if you decide to... erm... travel."

A lot less negative sounding than I expected. And there might be non-terrible things to learn, if you can trust that dude at all.

Is healing magic the same kind of a thing?

Ritz waves goodbye to the Mother superior and the two of them start walking toward town.

"those blades smell like bitterbell." Ysmir remarks, "why does your mom have daggers that were poisoned?"

"I don't know." Ritz replies, "maybe bitterbell poison is common for traveling priests?"

"traveling assassins, more like." she sticks her tongue out.

"...hey! Mother Opal isn't my mom, that just means she's the highest ranking nun in the convent."

Ysmir nods, "I know what Mother superior means, but she's also your mom."

"no, she's not." Ritz repeats, more firmly, "my mom and dad are..."

she sighs, "well I don't know where my mom and dad are."

"are you sure they're even alive?" Ysmir asks.

"they have to be." Ritz furrows her brow. Ysmir notices Ritz's mood turns, so she doesn't push the subject. instead she notices a noise in front of them, small at first, but growing. it's the rumbling of an engine.

Ysmir instinctively pushes Ritz behind herself and awaits the unknown vehicle.

Ritz has never seen a machine like what he's riding. this boy must be ludicrously rich, or from a different continent. maybe both. Ritz can't help but think he's pretty good looking.
