If you're looking for the key it is very likely in the office. Pry the locked drawer open, or shoot the wooden part of it so you can break the thing. Shooting the lock itself may result in ricochet.

I'm not sure about how to rig something for the pedals and have it be safe.

Alright, we're out of town, I've got an hour's head start on them. I'm scared. I don't know what I'm going to do tonight, much less after that. Jiri is asleep in the back seat. It's three in the morning.
