I don't think the Remorses are as hostile as they once were. Spuns created them off of lose rules, and Nix let them be. While it was fun for them to have toyed around with people's lives at first, they eventually grew bored of it, and started doing things that were less, well, malevolent.
You've got not one, but two such Remorses moving about your town right now. Both of them holding benevolent intentions. One created the town and is acting in Nix's place as the protector to it. The other bound himself to the lives of his chosen to protect them from the hostile actions of other Remorse. If he leaves, it is not that he has promised to kill anybody, rather, the opposite: By binding himself to them, his presence is all that is keeping them alive.
What happened here was panic. The "Rebirths," or whatever you want to call these once Remorse that are trying to redeem themselves, they are still subject to such feelings. When his holy man's credit started to waver, he went about protecting it. You, like him, have given it your all to redeem yourself, haven't you? But, while you may have been successful in keeping yourself clean until now, when somebody sees through you, your panic, it's like throwing yourself into a pit of mud. You immediately covered yourself in dirt again.
I don't know why we, the voices of Seventh Rebirth, can speak to you, a servant of the Fifth Rebirth, but if he does wish to clean himself as you do, then he must have saw our plight and realized it is true.
