the drill sergeant moves down my row, barking to each of the Marines in turn.

"What's your name, private?"

"a-Adil, sir."

she's a bulldog for sure, but she's kind of cute, honestly.

"Adil ain't a good name for you. Adil is a name for someone who don't shit his panties when asked a question."

I like the Kosh. they're always so direct.

"it was my father's name, s-sir."

"where is he now, private?"

"dead, sir."

"he's lucky he ain't around to see his son stuttering like a faggot."

not like Umans. we never say what we mean, even when we want to.

the drill sergeant moves down to me.

"Name, age, and homeworld, private."

"Wilhelm Cassius Constant, 16, zt556, sir!" I yell.

I can see she knows us. the Constants; a long line of conmen, liars, and theives dating back to the founding of New Babylon back in 2195.

"the fuck is a Constant doing in my platoon?" she growls, "don't you have a cousin or two to screw?"

"my cousins are also my parents so I think it'd be somewhat awkward, sir."

the sergeant laughs. "alright Constant, let me ask you. What is the purpose of a soldier?"

"perhaps. am I wrong, sir?"

"you are, Constant." she says as she turns and begins to walk down the line.

"what's your name sweetheart?" the drill sergeant turns to a Krill.

"um... Jack, sir." the Krill replies nervously.

"did you forget your fucking name, Jack?"

"No ma'am- sir. no sir."

"sheeshah, I have a sorry bunch of shitheads this year." she shakes her head, "you gonna bug out when we take you off your mama's tit?"

"No sir." Jack doesn't seem sure.

"you know 1 in 5 bugs experience vivid hallucinations when cut off from the queen, Jack. you popped your cherry, jack?"

"sir?"

"you know, been taken off the line, jack."

"no sir."

after a few more minutes of grilling, the Sergeant moves to the front of the formation.

"alright listen up marines." she barks, "at 0600 Tomorrow I better see all your bright sunny faces right here in formation. tomorrow we're getting you daisies started on weapons drills. until then I don't give a fuck what you do. dismissed."

today, at least, I think I'm free. we just got shipped here, and most of the recruits came from offworld. I doubt they'll be putting us through any rigorous shit while we're still in the throes of Gravlag.

I need some food in my stomach, anyway. it's been churning ever since I stepped off the skipper. I head to the Mess hall. the planet, Xesas, is a Kosh held terrestrial world that's been terraformed to mimic their home planet, meaning that the air is heavy and oxygenated and the moisture sticks to you like a god damn sheet. like all of the buildings, the Mess hall is a massive concrete block with windows seemingly placed as an afterthought.

I enter the Cafeteria. it looks like most of the recruits had the same idea as me. it takes a few minutes for me to get my food, and I take a seat in an empty space. next to me is the Krill that the Sergeant grilled earlier. it makes a nervous muffled clicking sound as it taps its tray with its finger.

that's despicable. what did you have in mind?

I sit and begin eating.

"he or she?" I ask.

the Krill snaps its head toward me with a quickness unmatched by an Uman. its clicking stops.

"...she."

"nice to meet you ms..."

"Jack." she offers her claw to me and I shake it.

"Constant. don't let the brass get to you, jack. they're just trying to pound you down to build you back up. standard marine bullshit."

Jack blinks confusedly and then is hit with sudden realization.

"oh! no. that's not it at all. well... I guess it's sort of..."

the Krill rails off. she seems on an other world for a few moments, then snaps back into attention.

"sorry." she chitters, "I'm just nervou-worried. what if I can't take the silence without mother's voice?"

"you know it's more likely the more you stress out over it." I say between bites.

"that's not how the marines work, you idiot." Adil scoffs, "what the hell do they teach Umans in school?"

"what do you mean?"

"it's sink or swim alright, except we all gotta swim or we all drown. we get assigned into four man teams and all the grades of that team are averaged out. even if someone like me gets perfect scores in all categories, then a lead weight or two could pull my grade down to failing."

"that sounds an extremely arbitrary system." I remark.

If this is all a group effort then why are you trying to sabotage your fellow marines? Seriously My advice is just don't think about it and just do it. Worry about doesn't get anything done and is just wasted effort.

We may all Sink or Swim out here, but don't feel like it's all on you, Jack.
If you need help or advice, feel free to ask your squadmates for help or advice. If they refuse or shove you off, well that's fine-if they don't mind carrying your rear. If they aren't willing to carry, nor teach? Chances are that person wouldn't be a good squadmate even if you were skilled.
That said...Don't feel bad if you're sent home, no offense but you don't really seem like you're all that cut out for this.

Neurozine UniMalitren, a common antipsionic. it temporarily cuts a Krill off from the hivemind. I've heard that off world Krill have to take it so they don't get assaulted by the local hivemind.

I stand and pick up my tray. "instead of getting pulled back by your peers you can swallow your pride and push them ahead."

"you're one to talk, Constant." Adil glares at me, "you're just as poisonous as Jack. your action movie hero 'fuck the system' bullshit isn't just going to send your hick ass back to your dirtball, it's going to send three people who actually give a shit back with you."

I turn to Jack. "we all sink or swim, Jack. it's not all on you. who knows, you might get three team mates that aren't turds. if you need help or advice, lean on them, and if they let you fall, fuck em', they fall with you. in any case, uh... no offense, but, you might want to rethink your career choice."

If this is anything like the army I know, never, ever, call a sergeant an officer. They're NCOs, they started out as grunts, and they got to sergeant by being smart. Officer is an insult.

And yes, it probably would be weird. Ask if the purpose of a soldier is to defend his home, then.
>>
No. 534908 ID: 96c896

I don't think you should try to nag her into telling you what the purpose of a soldier is. As for finding out those regulations, you could try a bit of flirting to test the waters. Just be sure not to drop the customary respect given to a sergeant.

State that you are worried about Jack. What do you do if she starts hallucinating?

...yes. Very weird.

You're better off just taking cues from her. If she wants things to go that way, you'll find out. Or if you're really curious about the rules on fraternization, just look them up when they're making you memorize a book of regulations.

we start down the trail. I stay silent, mostly concentrating on not looking as out of shape as I actually am.

"I'm still wondering what a Constant is doing trying to get an honest job." she says as she moves ahead, or more honestly, I lag behind, "especially as a Kosh marine."

"I guess I just got tired of selling snake oil." I speak in a breathless, cadenceless jumble of syllables.

"but why a soldier? you obviously don't think too highly of the military."

the question sits in my head and the silence lingers for some time.

"I guess I'm just naive." I say after thinking it over.

she sighs thoughtfully.

"to protect their home." I say, "the purpose of a soldier is to protect their home."

"sounds like propaganda." she replies.

"I'm guessing that's wrong as well, then?"

"well, do you believe it?"

I shrug. my home is not something I care about much. if I got news tomorrow that zt556 was demolished I'd likely not bat an eyelash. I would definitely not die to protect it.

"you didn't drag me along just to get my life's story, did you Sergeant?" I pant.

she looks back with a serious expression on her face. "what do you mean?"

"you're sticking me with a lone wolf with a stick up his ass and a 7 foot tall dead weight."

"honestly that's one of the better things I've been accused of." I say as I catch my second wind, "shit happens. the Constants don't have a great reputation. I take her hand slowly. she entangles her fingers into mine and puts her other hand's fingers on my wrist.

"your pulse is strong and fast, Pale-and-Gaunt." she says and lets go.

"I've told you," A'isha steps forward, "Humanoids use names, not

descriptions."

"oh, right." the Navani looks embarrassed.

"a pleasure to meet you," I say, "My name is Wilhelm Constant."

"Hi Wilhelm Constant!" the Navani beams, "my name is Nazca! n... nnn..."

she seems to struggle to say a word.

"Nero." A'isha cuts in.

"Yes!" the Navani nods, "Nero! my name is Nero Nazca!"

A'isha takes Nero by the shoulder

"Nero, Constant and I have to speak with Carthage."

"Short-and-silent?" Nero asks.

I confusedly wave goodbye. we continue walking down the hallway as Nero

ducks into a room, still bidding me goodbye.

"what... was that?" I say after some thought.

"Navani are fascinating creatures, aren't they?" A'isha chuckles,

"they're so obsessed with their acestors and clan honor they forget

about themelves. Nero isn't her real name. I can't find any records of

her real name."

"how can a person forget their own name?" I ask, dumbfounded.

A'isha shrugs, "it's just not something that crosses ther minds."

"why is she here, training to be a Kosh marine? why are any of these creatures?"

"they all have their reasons." A'isha looks around thoughtfully, "Nero's whole clan allied with the Kosh a couple of generations back due to some dispute with a rival clan. every fighting age Nazca has enlisted since."

A'isha stops and turns to a door. on the other side I hear a guitar. she knocks on it twice.

"Carthage!" She shouts, "get your pants on, you got company!"

she hovers around for a few seconds, waiting to see who I pick. I oblige by picking Sherman, the last knight. he's slow, but if she lets me get going it'll be hard to stop. she selects Kast, the disowned. Kast unzips his mask and jacket and out of it pours countless tendrils which ensnare Sherman and pull him into Kast's being.

she begins the round by immediately going on the offensive, relentlessly striking me with flame and fist. I am good with Vakun, but Carthage puts me down like it's nothing. the first round is over in ten seconds.

the second round I dodge her initial barrage and go on the offensive. at first it seemed as though she was simply unstoppable, but now I see she had a rhythm. a rhythm I had just interrupted. she gets a few hits in but we both know where this round is going. I keep a steady stream of hits going and whenever she recovers, I change my cadence and she slips again. in moments, I best her.

the third round, she starts brutally. she blows through her entire super bar, and most of my health bar, in seconds. I retaliate with a truly brutal string of combos. I check the health bars and see the both of us can take maybe one hit. I grin. she blew through her super at the beginning of the round, but I still have all of mine. I go on the defensive and wait. sure enough, she gives me an opening, and I take it.

Vakun's fatality is possibly one of the most brutal in the game. he simply shrieks and leaps upon the opponent, tearing them to bloody shreds.

the Sergeant told me to run, so I will. beside me, Jack runs as well, with a wide stepped gallop that covers a meter and a half easily with each step of her gargantuin legs.

I reflect upon the Sergeant's orders, and look at Jack once again. team mate. the word is almost foreign to me. to depend. the concept is cancerous. if I fail, I fail them as well, so I must not. but if they fail, they will fail me as well, so I can not let them.

"you know anything about the Crux, Adil?" the Sergeant asks.

"n-no sir!" I stutter in reply. Sheshah. control yourself. speak like a humanoid, not a whimpering dolt.

"they're not like you or I, Adil." she turns her emerald eyes upon me, "they have no concern for the world outside of their own objectives. they have no family, no culture of their own, and no history to unify them, but they are all driven by intense desire."

"of what?" Jack asks in an even breath. it frightens me the power and fortitude that the krill are capable of. we've been practically sprinting in this dense, moist heat for quite some time, and Jack barely seems to notice. I think to remark on this, it might lift her spirits since my last outburst of verbal poison, but the words escape me.

I know that I am to be partnered with Jack, Wilhelm Cassius Constant, and a Crux by the name of Carthage.

Jack's predicament is simple enough. she is a Krill and so she is mighty, but she has doubt of herself that will lead her to ruin. I think if she gets over her issues she could easily become a very talented shock trooper.

I know little of Carthage. the Sergeant has told me she grew up on a Kosh world and practices many Kosh customs, and that she is timid, which means nothing to me. the Sergeant also told me that she is very resourceful, which is good.

Constant's drawl annoys me, but that is a personal problem. he's a smooth talker, which means he is likely to climb the ranks quickly, but he's not got the mind nor the body of a soldier. he'll need to be whipped into shape before he's ready for the field.

"yes."

"they're hardly new. haven't we been using Navani for years?"

"yes but they've been trained and outfitted by Navani." she replies, "this is one of the first years we are taking into our own hands the training and outfitting of Inhumans."

the Humanist religion says that Humans and Krill were sent to the Kosh so we could lead them to enlightenment and perfection of form, but I am not a Humanist. the real reason that Kosh, Uman, and Krill are humanoid when others are not is because we are political allies. honestly, the Krill are less "humanoid" than the Navani. they only have such body shapes now due to their ability to evolve consciously and frightfully quickly. I've seen pictures of the Krill before they joined the Humanoid alliance, and they look nothing like they used to.

perhaps they are put so far away on purpose. but to what end I wonder.

"so long as they can hold a gun, they're useful to us, sir."

"no," she turns back and glares, "so long as they can hold a gun they are detrimental to the enemy."

"excuse me for s-saying, but there is no difference, s-sir."

"there is a difference and if you can not see that you're blind."

we enter the building. the air inside is frigid compared to the kiln I ran through, and smells of antiseptic. I see many creatures that I have read about extensively but never had a chance to experience. I see a mighty Lychter flirt awkwardly with a Navani maiden. I see two Dabians in a heated argument about who should hold the door open for who. I see two Skulks chatting about which alloy tastes the best and which company manufactures the most high quality body.

it could be because she doesn't realize Jack is a masculine name. Krill have an odd understanding of gender. all Krill outside the hive are female workers, but since they are mostly barren, some choose to identify as "men" and some as "women", even though they are all female. I don't believe any of the male drones adopt this behavior, and to my knowledge the queen always identifies as a female.

>>536859
"Murderscrub" is a rough translation of the Scrub word for their species, Kiramashi. the direct translation is more along the lines of "one who kills for pleasure rather than survival or sustenance", which is a mouthful. the name fits, in any case. Murderscrubs seem to be instinctively drawn to slaughter.

>>536869
I've noticed. I don't know which thought disquiets me more: that she may be gathering information about me specifically for Queen Kazzertak, or that she has some attraction to me.

"Jack, calm down. don't make a scene." I say, futilely. she already as the whole room staring at her. her eyes light up, as though she were being jerked awake. she turns to me with an embarrassed look on her face, then turns to he murderscrub.

"I'm sorry sir." she says in a small, sheepish voice not befitting a creature her size, "I don't know what came over me."

"not a problem, dear." the Murderscrub shrugs, "what's your name, sweetheart?"

"Jack." she replies, somewhat confused.

the scrub stands and walks to her, presenting his hand. "glad to meetcha, Jack. the name's Gorecleave."

"are those sniper rifles?" I ask.

she shrugs. "two Havok cannons and a monomachete, I suppose."

she says it in such a matter of fact way. I would ask what a Havoc cannon is, but I've seen a few before on zt556, in the hands of the Krill colonists. Havoc cannons are truly nasty weapons. they are about the size of a Uman shotgun, but with a grip designed for a krill to hold it in one hand. when fired, it spews trillions of microscopic shards of some Krill substance which ignites on contact.

"how about you, Carthage? what are you planning on using?"

Ask Jack what's on her mind since she seems out of it. Do push to hard for information though as she looks like she doesn't need the extra stress.

Also how effective is the Havok cannon's range? cause how I'm seeing it is we have a close combat specialist (Jack), a long range specialist (Adel), and an unknown (Carthage). So it seems so far we're going to need someone to cover the middle ground so I say grab either an assault rifle (or whatever they call them here) or an LMG if you feel like carrying around something that heavy. Guess we could also go with something meant more for taking out vehicles then taking out people as well. Still to earlier to really guess what we want without actually seeing what they have first but hey it never hurts to get an idea.

"think about it, between you and I, are they going to aim for the Kosh holding a long rifle, or the Uman with a big ass buzzsaw? just holding one of those monsters is like wearing a bullseye on the seat of your pants."

he's right, with a heavy caliber machine gun, I'd be the prime target. if I planned on using one, I'd need to have some defensive options.

"how about an assault rifle or an SMG?"

"well they'd be lighter, both in weight and caliber. assault rifles are usually more modifiable than other weapons, but machine guns can pour out much more lead much faster, and normally have higher capacity magazines. the SMG is going to be chambered for pistol ammunition so don't expect to get a shot through a wall, but to most lightly armored targets, a stream of bullets is a stream of bullets, no matter the caliber."

Well, does 'mother' understand why the cut off is a planned part of training: Specifically to prepare for the fact that it *will* happen later in service?
If that is understood then the question becomes whether 'mother' is having second thoughts about enlistment or if they should get over the separation.

In the military doctrine I'm familiar with for a four-member fire team the usual roles tend to be: Long range, close range, suppression and anti-armor. I have not the faintest clue as to the relative values of these roles in the training and missions you'll be involved with but picking weapons should depend at least as much on roles needed as on the available weapon selection I'd suggest.
Ask for differing opinions/suggestions about the necessary roles.

Jack shakes her head, "she doesn't have to trust. she's omniscient and omnipotent. if she does not surely know then she can surely make it so. why is she unsure? how can she be unsure and scared? these are not emotions for a queen to have! these are not things a worker should know! Why is she telling ME this?!"

"Jack, calm down." Adil says in a calm, even voice. Jack sighs heavily and nods.

the rest of the trek is done in silence, which I am somewhat thankful for. these people I'm assigned with; these are problems I am not prepared to deal with.

we arrive at the armory and enter. the front room of the Armory looks similar to many Uman government buildings, cramped, poorly lit, and stained a permanent yellowish brown. there is a single desk in the middle of the room. at the desk sits an older looking Kosh. he looks up to see us.

"Adil." he stands, "come to take my girl out to prom?"

"no sir," Adil grins back, "just here to grope her a bit."

the Kosh laughs a heavy, vintage laugh. "who're your friends?"

"this is my team." he motions toward each of us "Wilhelm Constant, Jack, and Carthage."

the Kosh nods and turns to us. "Gunnery Sergeant Vorteki. what can I do for you kids today?"

Life in general is uncertainty, and most people *pretend* otherwise because uncertainty is difficult to build habits and plans around. This pretense usually dies where full-scale life and death uncertainty is involved.
This queen is communicating about that because that is a simple fact you must plan and prepare for when you have to do your own thinking and planning. Surprise: Nobody is omniscient, there's too much to know for that to be more than subjectively (inaccurately) true. If it were true that your queen was omniscient that would mean they knew a way to make sure that the mental connection could never be interrupted or broken, and they do not have that knowledge, therefore by definition the queen is not omniscient.

About the current situation: Ask for a general weapons demonstration briefing of everything you can use with some recommendations for what you should use, and further information about what is likely to be used against you.

GnySgt Vorteki nods and motions for us to follow him.

"well, first of all, when equipping your squad, remember the four pillars of Sheesha. it's what drives our military philosophy." as GnySgt Vorteki speaks, he counts off on his fingers, "they are the eye that sees, the hand that crushes, the voice that bellows, and the mind that is informed. in less theistic terms, four man squads traditionally have a spotter, a striker, suppression, and a Chameleon."

he leads us down a few hallways and into a large warehouse. the warehouse is filled with towering shelves, which are filled with weapons, armor, and equipment.

"the spotter of the team usually but not always carries a long rifle, and they spot enemies, terrain features, cover, and anything else worth note, and will relay that information to the rest of the team. the striker is tasked with putting enemies down quickly and efficiently; they take many forms, whether they use rifles, machine guns, shotguns, or explosives, their job is to put down anyone that threatens the team, and to do it quickly. suppression's job is to provide cover fire, pin down the enemy, and to mow down any enemies caught in the open."

he takes an aged Kosh long rifle down from a shelf and hands it to Adil, "now be gentle with Nana." he says, "she's a delicate flower."

"and what about the Chameleon, sir?" I ask as I gaze at the vast quantity of death dealers lining the shelves.

"the wildcard. each squad's Chameleon is different, depending on what the squad wants or needs. some are medics, others are anti-armor, I've heard a few of them are stealth killers, but the majority of them will end up in a more supportive role. what are you looking at right now as a squad?"

Adil Hefts the rifle, "well I'm thinking of taking Nana here, so I'll likely be the spotter, and Jack is going to be using Havoc cannons and a monomachete, so I could see her as suppression or Striker."

"Nonsense" Vorteki shakes his head, "Nana can be Spotter, Suppression, or Striker easily. the thing that most recruits don't realize is that each of these roles is extremely flexible, not just the chameleon. in my old squad, the spotter was an Uman with a magnum, and me and Nana were suppression. I would pop one of the enemies and force them behind cover, while our striker flanked them with a long rifle of her own, and our Chameleon kept our positions hidden with clever use of camouflage and traps."

he looks off into the distance, seemingly reminiscing, but then snaps back to the present.

"what about you two?" he asks Carthage and I, "have any idea what you're looking for?"

"I was thinking about an assault rifle or a MG. possibly an anti-armor weapon." I say, "but I'm unsure of my options."

"in the service your equipment will be limited only by your ability to obtain it, but here at the academy, you will be limited to weapons that can feasibly be modified to use nonlethal ammunition. in this case you have solid projectile weapons, energy weapons, a limited amount of grenades, and a baton, which will stand in as a melee weapon."

he hands me a binder, "this is a list of all of the applicable weapons and equipment."

538354

I cut the list down to what I and Carthage could feasibly use. neither of us could wield Kosh or Krill weapons due to the grips.

Pistol: Pistols are very small and light, making them great sidearms. most are also extremely easy to modify. they come in 3 varieties: Revolver, Semiautomatic, and autopistol. revolvers are the most reliable design, and they have decent stopping power, but reloading is time consuming and the capacity is only 6 rounds. the Semiautomatic pistol has decent stopping power and a 15 round capacity, which is loaded with magazines, instead of by hand, but they are not as reliable as revolvers and have a chance to become jammed when reloaded. Autopistols are like even smaller SMGs. they have a capacity of 30 rounds, and a high rate of fire, but lacks both the stopping power and reliability of the revolver and Semiautomatic.

Shotgun: this is a spreadfire weapon with a short effective range but will deal terminal damage to most unarmored targets. Shotguns come in two varieties: Pump action, and Break action. Pump action shotguns have an 8 shell capacity, and have a decent rate of fire, but take time to reload, and may jam. Break action shotguns only hold two rounds, but will never jam and both chambers can be fired with a single pull of both triggers.

Rifle: a long grip and barrel, and rifled chamber, make these weapons extremely accurate. Rifles are also very modular, letting users customize them to a degree. Rifles come in 2 varieties: Assault rifle, and Long rifle. Assault rifles can fire in single shots, burst, or full auto. they have a capacity of 30 rounds. Long rifles can only fire single shots and have a capacity of 10, but they have a much longer effective range, and have almost perfect accuracy.

Machine gun: Machine guns are fully automatic, making them exceptional suppression weapons, but due to their high recoil, they are not very precise. Machine guns come in 2 varieties: Large, and Sub. Large machine guns are extremely heavy and loud, and the caliber of ammunition they fire can pierce most forms of civilian armor, making them very intimidating weapons. they hold 100 rounds in a large box magazine. Submachine guns are much more unassuming and have less firepower than LMGs, but are lighter and easier to manage. they have a capacity of 40.

Energy weapons: Energy weapons fire lances of superheated plasma which cut through armor and sear the flesh underneath. Energy weapons can be recharged, making them more efficient than solid projectiles. Damage to the impacted area is extraordinary, but to surrounding areas, it it quite minimal, which means that to reliably kill, one has to fire directly upon vital areas, such as the head, neck, and chest. Energy weapon come in two varieties: Pistol and rifle. damage and capacity is identical between the two, but the rifle is more accurate, while the pistol is lighter.

Grenades: Grenades are hand held explosives, which are primed to explode, then thrown by hand. Grenades can be primed to explode with a 5 second fuse. there are 3 varieties of grenade currently available to you: Pellet, Smoke, and Flashbang. Pellet grenades are filled with rubber pellets which mimic the shrapnel from a frag. Smoke grenades fill a large area with opaque smoke, which limits visibility greatly. Flashbang grenades creates blinding light and deafening sound, causing anyone who succumbs to its effects to become essentially helpless for a short period of time.

Launchers: grenade launchers propel explosives much further than one could throw. Grenade launchers must use specially prepared. when Launcher jam, there is a possibility that the grenade will be primed to detonate. Grenades launchers come in three varieties: Revolver, Break action, and Shoulder mounted. Revolving Grenade launchers can hold up to 6 grenades, which are primed to explode either on contact, or when 2 seconds have passed after firing, but reloading is time consuming. Break action launchers have a capacity of 2 grenades, but reloading is faster. Shoulder mounted launchers have a capacity of a single grenade, but they can send them much further than either the Revolver or the Break action. shoulder mounted rockets ALWAYS detonate on impact.

Restricted weapons: these weapons are unable to be modified to fire nonlethal ammunition, and is not allowed too be used for wargames; however, recruits may select them for weapons drills and live fire tests.

Rail weapons: these weapons use mass drivers to silently propel rods of superheated tungsten great distances. Railguns come in Pistol, Rifle, and Repeater. the Pistol has a capacity of 10 and the shortest effective range, but is lighter than the rifle and repeater. the Rifle has the longest range and highest projectile velocity, but is very heavy, and has a capacity of only 5 rods. the Rail Repeater is approximately the size of an assault rifle, but weighs as much as a LGM. Repeaters can fire both single shots and automatic, though users have experienced warping of the barrel if the weapon is fired auto for too much time. the weapon has a 50 round capacity.

Assault pistol: this 10 shot spreadfire pistol fires a cloud of thermite shrapnel, causing an effect similar to a Krill Havoc cannon on a smaller scale.

Pulse Drivers: originally devised by Skulks as a low cost alternative to solid projectile weaponry, Pulse drivers have become a standard for security forces and criminals due to their ease of use and low cost. Pulse drivers shear off molecules of a titanium block inserted into the weapon and convert them into a plasma, then fire them out at light speed. the effect is somewhat similar to an Energy rifle, except that Pulse Drivers are automatic weapons. a Pulse Driver can convert a single 2"x"5"x2" block of titanium into 4 hours of sustained fire, though the weapon can only sustain 20-30 seconds of sustained fire before it overheats and locks the trigger while it vents.

Flame thrower: these weapons are extremely effective against infantry, coating them in burning napalm. Flame throwers have heavily armored fuel tanks, which weight them down greatly, and they can deplete their entire tank within a minute, but among suppression weaponry, none is as frightening or effective as the flame thrower.

I notice that a majority of the restricted weapons are Krill weapons. the Havoc Cannon included, though I assume Jack will just use shotguns with modified grips. the list also includes the different types of Armor and equipment available to me. should I look at these before making my weapon selection?

sorry about the novel I just made you read.

I still say go for the Submachine gun and get the revolver as the side arm. The revolver would only really be used for if an enemy gets really close to you, (hence the stopping power) or when you run out of ammo for the SMG. (which is when you should fall back and not actively engage anyone) In both cases you will most likely only need a few shots so the small capacity shouldn't be too big of a problem.
I'm a bit fuzzier on Carthage's role. I feel like she would feel better with a sneakier role (which would probably include an energy rifle for taking out armored opponents when they are distracted and a quiet rail pistol as a side arm to take out unarmored opponents) it's really up to her though.

I think we should look at armor/ utility options as well-as I recalled, Vorteki despite taking a long rifle, went Suppression, making sure they stayed under cover, lest they be smote by him and Nana.

As for us...Hrrm. Well, Adil can Suppress in the same manner, or Strike, or Spot, and Jack will be scary and draw lots of attention because HAVOC CANNON! Which seems to suggest Suppress or Strike roles being the easiest...
A REALLY Oddball idea is that you guys use the roles interchangably, until you figure out your favorites.
more LoL-based thinking here, but I figure in much the same way a champion can do different things depending on items bought or Runes, depending on how this team focuses on stuff, we might get a really crazy set-up. Another thing to note is the fact we swap between characters randomly-let's not make the Uman the Chameleon of the team in hopes we'll always be there to give him a hand!

Voting revolving grenade launcher and smg, or revolving grenade launcher and autopistol if the smg is too heavy.

Nothing quite says suppression like six grenades flying downrange. The auto pistol/smg as a sidearm because it's fairly light, it should be easy enough to quickly draw if something sneaks up on us while we're reloading the grenade launcher, and it fits the same suppression role as the launcher. And like, we'd be able to shoot people that close in on us without the risk of exploding ourselves.

And with any luck we'll be able to get our hands on different types of grenades for the launcher, like smoke, tear gas, or incendiary grenades, for maximum support potential.

I think you should try out a variety of weapons, to see if any especially call to you. I find it interesting that there are so many different types of pistols- anywhere from a fully automatic smg-like gun to a RAIL pistol. Someone could probably carry a large variety all at once, and switch weapons when the situation calls for a different gun.

Definitely try out the Pulse Driver.

Constant's Loadout: Energy rifle, semi-auto pistol, and Pulse Driver. E-Rifles provide reliability, power, anti-armor, and accuracy. The semi-auto pistol is a tried and true sidearm that you really can't go wrong with. Pulse Drivers would make efficient and effective suppression weapons in the field, even if we can't use them in wargames. Replace the Driver with an SMG for practice.

Carthage's Suggested Loadout: Energy pistol, break-action launcher, and smoke grenades/flashbangs. The E-pistol is light and reliable, and energy weapons likely have little recoil, making it an ideal main weapon for Carthage's tiny form. She seems interested in the grenades, so a launcher might be a good pick for lobbing explosives long-range, and break-action seems the easiest to use. Some smoke grenades will make advancing and moving around without cover safer, and flashbangs will make openings for Jack to move in for the kill.

(I truely hoped for rail guns that shot just rods of metal at mach-20 or some were near that:( )
I think we should look at the armour first then make our loadout based on what armour we get like 'exo/powered armour=SHWs like heavy rail guns and minis' 'light armour=ARs, SMGs and RPG/MGLs' and so on, the exo/powered loadout would be for str and sup and the light one for spoter and the wild card but most importnet thing is that both loadouts can be any of the slots in the team as the exo/powered can be spoter thanks to its rail guns(if you go for the rail loadout) and it can be shock-unit in the wild-card slot(with both minis and rails) think on what vorteki said cos i think his spoter had a good pair of binocs:)

Honestly? Given your team loadout, I'd suggest a pulse driver and grenades, with energy weapons to back up if you can stand the weight.

You're going to be practising with energy weapons anyway since they fire similar.

Although I wonder if it's possible to add three more barrels and firing mechanisms to the pulse driver and make it a Pulse Flayer with four overlapping planes of fire. Less ammo and shorter firing time, but it would really mess up anyone close.

I think we should ask the other members in our team what role they want to be and check the armors before we jump into a decision so we can make a good build for ourselves but just incase we want to jump the gun and pick our load out now here are some ideas I had based on what class we pick.

spotter- any type of rifle. Assault, long, energy, pulse driver (if it's accurate), or rail gun (personally would go for the rail gun here) with a pistol with high stopping power as our sidearm. Idea hear is get a big gun to take down the bigger threats well the others mop up the softer targets.

striker- Pulse driver with a revolver or rail pistol as a side arm. Idea here is to kill anything that comes close with overwhelming force

suppression- Grenade launcher (either revolver or shoulder) and a smg. Nothing says suppression like a hail of explosions.

Chameleon- SMG, energy pistol, and as many Grenades as you can hold. My idea here was to make a light troop that mainly acts as support using grenades to either force dig in enemies to move, using special grenades to let our squad move in quicker and safer, and if we can get some wire we can even make makeshift mines, and have him move behind the enemy while they're focused on the other three members or to move with the other members of the team to act as support/wingman. and if we're sneaky enough I can't help but think how much we could scare the crap out of whoever we are fighting if we can get behind them and using some wire and a Grenade and then forcing them into a retreat and then watching the fireworks.

Railguns are the way of the future, all the punch of a sniper with the rapid fire capability's of an assault rifle. Probably grab a smg/auto pistol for when things get up close and personal. No matter how awesome a weapon is, it is useless if you cant carry it around. Make sure you can still keep up with your squad while wearing a combat load or the only thing that gun will do is get you killed.

Don't suppose you happen to be ambidextrous? Some part of me desires dual wielding action.

initial reaction was quite evenly spread, though the smg and pulse driver have a very slight edge:
smg IIII
Revolver II
Revolving GL I
Autopistol I
Pulse III
Flame Thrower I
Energy Rifle I
Semiauto Pistol I
Rail Rifle I
it also seems that people are favoring a suppression role overall.

I decide to postpone my decision. I look over at Carthage, who walks away from a shelf lined with pellet and Flashbang grenades.

"what do you think you want to use?" I ask.

"...I can't lift some of the guns." she replies in a barely audible whisper.

"so that means no LMGs, Flame Throwers, Rail Repeaters, or RPG's, what of the weapons left have you been looking at?"

she shrugs.

"any interest in the grenades?" I ask as I smile. her eyes widen and she shakes her head quickly, then she tries to withdraw casually, but ends up looking even more awkward as she scoots away.

"Constant." GnySgt Vorteki beckons me as he approaches, "any ideas now?"

"I'm not sure." I say looking back at the binder, "I may need to sleep on it. I'm leaning towards an SMG or a Pulse driver, but I'm not sure."

"a Pulse Driver?" he raises an eyebrow, "you know you're not going to be able to take that out into combat until it's the real thing, right?"

"I know. I figure it's a lot like a Submachine gun, though."

"sort of." he nods, "you'll have to get used to the recoil, or more, the lack of it. all of the energy is put into the projectile, so the gun doesn't move an inch, you may want to get used to both the SMG and an energy weapon if you plan on effectively using a Pulse Driver."

"I was wondering," I tap my chin with a finger, "what kind of weapon modifications can I get ahold of here?"

"the selection of weapon mods is going to be limited at the Academy. the allowed modifications are Silencers for Rifles, pistols, and shotguns, belt feeder for the LMG, Laser optic for all weapons, a Telescopic scope for all rifles, and a Recycler for the Energy Weapons. once you're out of the academy, though, your options are going to open up."

Recyclers I believe hold onto a minimal amount the charge used when the weapon fires, allowing the weapon to fire more times before being reloaded or recharged.

"what about armor?"

"armor is going to come in three categories: light, medium, and heavy. the heavier the armor, the more protection, and the more modifications you can put on it."

"what kinds?"

he shrugs. "none for now, but when you get out of the academy, you name it, man. Injector rigs, ablative coating, chameleon weave, displacement arrays, I've even seen some solar powered fabricators that pump nutrients into your body so you can go for days without food, water, or sleep."

"Adil, what are you planning on using?" I ask as I motion him over to Vorteki and I. no need for me to jump into any decisions.

"well I'm honor bound to take Nana off of the Sergeant's hands. I will likely take an Al'ashaad handbow as well. they don't pack a great amount of punch, but they are accurate and can fire in bursts. if anyone wants to get close to me I'll have a warspear handy, as well."

a Kosh warspear is similar to a Trenchspike with a machete stuck on it. Kosh swear by it, and most Marines carry one.

"I'm likely going to be wearing light armor." he nods, "I don't want to be weighed down, and I'm not planning on being shot, in any case."

"what about Jack? what do you think she'll be carrying?"

"two Havoc cannons and a monomachete, she said. I would tell her to get a sidearm as well, possibly an SMG or something. if the grip is modified, she can hold most weapons in one hand. I don't know what armor she plans on wearing, but I can only assume she'll want to at least bundle up with some medium armor, and Sheesha knows she can carry it easily. then again, she's got some plating naturally, so she may want to dress light."

"what do you think Carthage should be looking at?"

he scratches the back of his head thoughtfully, "that's... not my call, constant. she's the one who needs to figure out what she's using. is she expressing any interest in anything?"

Well, judging by Aza, she seems to like being unpredictable. And with her hood and scarf, she doesn't like being seen. The suggested 'all pistols' loadout would give her guns with bullets, lasers, railguns, and even a tiny shotgun. She might want suppressors and stealth equipment, to make it even more difficult to tell what she's doing. Smoke grenades and flashbangs might still be a good pick as tools of stealth and deception.

Maybe ask Carthage which weapons she thinks Aza would choose.

we'll figure it out but maybe you should get a baton for now as well so you have some protection incase someone gets in close to you. So it seems for the war games (whenever we start those) we'll be carrying an smg and an energy rifle to act as our pulse driver and I think we should get a baton as well. Also since we're leaning toward suppression I say we go for medium armor so not to be bogged down to much if we need to move somewhere quick and to give us decent protection. I say we worry about mods for our gear after we actually test it out so we can either use the mods to try and clip our weaknesses or to further boost our strengths.

I really don't think we should take both the smg and the pulse driver.

While they do have their differences, they still fill a very similar role, and I feel like we'd be better off taking a secondary weapon that fills a range or roll that our primary weapon lacks.

And, as we're favouring suppression, the overheating problems with the pulse gun are a huge issue.

So, yeah. I'm still in support of taking one of the grenade launchers, preferably revolving, and an smg. Both guns are effective at suppression, the smg is strong up close and against light targets, while the grenades are effective out to a medium range and are effective against heavier targets.

I think we should just choose what we want and let Carthage pick whatever she likes, but if we end up having to pick for her I think she'd be better off with a silenced assault rifle than a bunch of pistols. I mean, the pistols themselves might not be heavy, but she'd have to carry ammo for all of them, and then she'd have to play the guessing game with how much ammo of each type she'll need. There's much less hassle with a single, versatile gun that only needs one type of ammo.

I do kinda want both since the pulse driver is reliable and can go for hours before having to reload which could be a god send in combat scenarios where we are low on supplies with no effective way to resupply and the smg as a backup weapon incase the pulse driver overheats (since they are known to do that) or something happens to our pulse driver rendering it useless. I guess it doesn't have to be an smg but I still want something other then just a pulse driver and whatever melee weapon we end up picking.

I shrug. "she can't lift some of the weapons, so they're right out. she seemed interested in the grenades, but she denied it when I asked her about it."

"why do you think she did that?" he asks, sounding more interested.

I shake my head, "I'm not sure. do you know?"

"I have a hunch, but I don't want to say anything until I'm sure."

I walk away and look for Carthage. I find her leaning against a wall far from everyone else, and far from the equipment. I greet her, but she gives me the same frightened look and breathily whispers "...Hello."

she nods, "why does Kast even put his dukes up at the beginning of the fight? he could just walk up and go BAM and then be on his merry way."

I shrug, "I guess it makes a little bit of sense in Arkanix, since everybody's a superhero."

"not Seigmeyer. he's just a dude who hates evil."

"yeah," I grin, "that's his superpower, hating evil."

"yeah but that doesn't mean much when you're getting shot at."

"so he should have a gun, too, then?"

"definitely."

"what about Aza?"

she gets a confused look on her face, "What about Aza?"

"she'd need a gun too, right? what would she be packing?"

she taps her chin, "well she is a goddess, I think she'd have a better chance than Seigmeyer. assuming she needed a gun I think she'd want one that is flashy and fiery, or one that would do nonlethal damage."

"nonlethal? why's that?"

"she doesn't kill people. even her fatality is nonlethal."

I raise a brow, "the one where she turns you into a statue and a bunch of flowers and shrubs and shit grows on you? that seems lethal."

she shakes her head, "you're misinterpreting it. she sings a lullaby, and the foe is so calmed by it they let the world grow around them. it's at least the least brutally lethal fatality in the game."

Sounds like she wants to be our support specialist. Flashbangs, smoke grenades, flares etc are all suitably flashy(mostly) nonlethal and can all be fired from your average 40mm grenade launcher (or alien equivalent). Recommend a break action GL so she can switch ammo types faster. The only other platform for special munitions that I know of is the shotgun. Shotgun shells can be replaced with slugs, incendiary rounds, and even tasers. Who knows what other surprises from the future can fit in there.

If we are still choosing a personal weapon my vote goes to rail repeater.

Non Leathal? Hunh... That's odd. I'm guessing Carthage here could be said to be the peacekeeper type- She fights to stop the fighting. Not because she wants to, but must...Which is odd given she's a Crux, who only do things as their desires demand...Ehh.
The idea of a pacifist marine is curious... Explains the Kazeban thing- He thrives and profits off war and death- every victory he sucks the life and all that makes someone a person out of them...
Aza, is in essence, trying to 'rise above' being a monster or a bitter failure. The price of her purity, is expressed by her being weaker than the other characters. That's why she's princess-ish and idyllic moreso than the other characters.
And to reflect that in Carthage... I'll wager she's not as 'hardened' as you guys. Jack at least, has that Krill strength going, Adil and you both have been through tough times. Carthage though...She has neither I think. She'll need keeping an eye on her.

If you kill a solder there is one less guy trying to kill you. If you wound a solder that guy is busy bleeding and two of his friends are carrying him to the hospital, that's three people no longer trying to kill you. There is no way to fight a war without killing people and that's something we all have to come to terms with but it doesn't mean it has to be your only option. People are going to die no matter what you do but if it makes you feel better you can try and save a few. If we are lucky the other guy might just return the favor some day.

It wont be easy but if that what you want, you will just have to prove that you can be just as effective with a nonlethal weapon as any other marine.

How clumsy is the repeater railgun? That seems to me like it's anti-armour and if it's within Constant's usability that's a pretty good, all-around flexible weapon. Get a messy sidearm for shorter-range, an assortment of grenades and a fun melee toy as well.
I suggest getting each kind of pistol for Carthage to try out, to see which work better for her and to discuss tactical options. Impress upon her that she seems well suited to stealth, support and agile striking options.

We should really get a handle on what the non-weapon equipment that's available is as well, battlefield management and mission completion isn't strictly about murder and obliteration generally.

This is basically the core of it. We just need to be sure we have at least one person that can do each of the roles. HOW they do the roles is up to the squad, and it's quite possible for members to be able to cover more than one role.

I think if Carthage doesn't want to be a striker or suppression then she should go for spotter and chameleon. Anti-armor might be a thing she could do with a plasma pistol, or she could go with stealth. Actually, stealth training alongside a pair of pistols-one rail and one plasma- would make her well-rounded.

Jack being the spotter actually sortof makes sense because she's so tall. She has a higher line of sight.

I move to the other lane bordering Adil and the Crux, and level my weapons. I fire a short burst.

"is this fine, Adil?" I ask.

Did you succeed in firing on your own merit? You might actually need to fully disconnect to train for being disconnected. Or, you could get mother to tell you exactly why she is guiding you in each specific way. That way you would know the proper stance not involuntarily, but via instruction.

At least explain to Adil your frustrations. You could use someone to talk to about your problems.

It could be that your internal clock is being kept in sync by mother. If you lose the connection you might end up not noticing you were doing the same thing repeatedly for hours. That could be dangerous in a combat situation.

for a moment we walk the path silently. I think to speak about my concerns or worries. to use the Crux's shoulder to cry upon, but before I can speak, she begins talking, seemingly in the middle of a sentence, as though she were continuing a conversation.

"I don't know why everyone assumes Kast is evil."

Kast? who is... the one from the fighting game? why is she talking about a fighting game?

"he is the one who kills everyone, isn't he?" I ask.

"not everyone. he only kills Sherman, Seigmeyer, and Kazerak. and only in the red shifted storyline. in the blue shift, he only kills Kazerak and Lonely Hearts."

"so he murders 2-3 people depending on which continuity you follow. that seems evil to me." I reply.

"it's not like he just kills them. he has reasons. Sherman is the last knight of Aza the immolated, who put him under a curse. he kills Sherman to draw out Aza, so he can lift his curse. seigmeyer attacks him and the two fight to the death."

"what about Kazerak?"

"because he eats souls?"

"no." she shakes her head, "the soul eating is only a vehicle which drives him to his goals."

"then is it because he is evil?"

"no. one can debate many of the characters are evil. Umbra and Lonely Hearts are certainly evil. Kazerak is cruel. he kills literally half the cast in red shifted. in blue shifted he tortures Vakun and Sherman to death. then there was that one really creepy sort of rape scene with Umbra."

"plus he kills aza."

"no he doesn't" she shakes her head, "what he does to Aza is so much worse. it's unforgivable, really. he drinks her essence. everything that made her Aza. he steals her fire, he steals her kindness, he steals her beauty. he just leaves her this twisted..."

her brow twitches as a word gets stuck in her throat, "...ugly, shell of herself. and Kast ultimately heals her. not because he wanted his curse lifted, but because he saw she was in pain. that's empathy. evil people don't have empathy."

"so you like Kast because he heals Aza?"

"no. you don't need to look at Aza as a person. she's a metaphor. she's the good left in the world Arkanix takes place in. she represents good intentions. some people, like Kazerak take these good intentions and exploit them, twist them to serve their own means. Kast's curse drives him to find and kill Aza. he's angry that she would place that curse upon him, but because of that curse, he fights and kills Kazerak, which generally makes the world a better place. he then finds a severely crippled Aza, who he can now kill easily, who he has wanted to destroy since the beginning of his character arc, and he instead gives her back what Kazerak took."

I wonder if she has self-esteem issues with her appearance. She idolizes Aza, and is upset when she loses her beauty. This could also be why she hides her face when she's nervous. I wouldn't act on that suspicion though.

Ask her if she pairs up any of the characters. Kast/Aza? Sherman/Seigmeyer?

Maybe you can take advantage of a lull in the conversation to ask what she thinks of Adil and Constant. Does she think Adil might be interested in her? Is she interested in him? If not, could she give you any tips to catch his eye, since she's been talking to him?

"do you ever pair anyone up romantically?"

Carthage laughs, "sometimes. I don't write any fan fiction, if that's what you're asking."

"who do you pair up?"

"I'd like to think Vakun and Umbra would get together, though Umbra is canon dead in the sequel. I've heard aza and Kast is a popular pairing, but I prefer Kast and Midori." she grins widely and snickers, "I think Lonely Hearts is totally all over Nathan's dick, though."

"what do you think about our teammates?" I ask as her giggling subsides.

she is silent for a while, "I'm afraid of Adil."

"why is that?" I ask, perhaps louder than I meant to.

"when he talks he talks really loudly, as though he is trying to be heard in a crowded room, and he swings his hands around while he speaks. it makes me jumpy."

I glance at her elbows. she is certainly shedding. she notices and chuckles nervously.

"I'm sorry," she says, covering her arms, "I was due for a new coat, anyway, and something about how Adil manhandled me kickstarted this molt. it's really gross, I know."

"not at all," I shrug, "kriil do the same thing every six months or so. you wouldn't believe how I look fresh from a molt. I'm so skinny and soft, and bone white. I look so silly."
