Alright, feeling a lot better after getting clean and all that. Now, let’s get to work. The last jobs weren’t so successful, we’re running out of funds. I should talk with Maestre and plan our next move to get us some gold.

Another thing, I need to go and talk with the blacksmith. I need the hook replaced, and maybe ask for a new tool or something for my arm.

Or I could just wander around for a bit and talk with the crew. And there was something else I had to do... but I can’t remember what...

Ok, what should I do first?

Ok, Manny it is.

Well, here’s our humble smithy. It’s pretty basic, but it’s enough for more of our necessities. And there’s Meinir, our blacksmith. She’s one out of a kind, in more than one sense. For starters, she’s a Chimera, and I’ve never seen any other member of her species in my life. So you can imagine how strange it was when she volunteered to work for us. She’s really good, and stronger than she looks.

“Oh, Captain. Good to see you awake. Your new hook is almost finished.”

Alright. Maestre is already waiting at my desk with the map.

“Ready to get back to work, captain?”

“Yes, Maestre. What are our options?”

“Well, the men are a bit tired from the last attack and little affair at the prison, but the morale is wonderful thanks to your fearless rescue. So let’s see, We’re still close to New Foria and the war continues, and the frontier between the Dukedom and Antay is dangerous, but maybe we could try to prey on any supply ship running away from battle or something.”

We could also do something simpler, board one of the merchant ships near any port city, or the ones that fly between Antay and the Free Islands.

Or we could return at any moment to our haven in Junae Island.”

“Hmm, know any place where I could find out more about a cursed stone?”
“I’m not well versed in the arts of the occult, but I recon the wizards’ guild would be a good place to start. There’s one in any capital city.”

Ok, what are we going to do? Attack a merchant ship, a supply ship from one of the armies, go back to Junae or should I try to find out more about this orb before anything else? Or is there anything else I could do?

“Now that I think about it... the boys have been pretty much been workin’ non-stop for the past few weeks... We should take a vacation or somethin’! We can easily stretch out the rest of our funds and find somewhere nice to relax for a while.”

“As you wish, captain. Giving our current location, we could head to Aryv in Free Islands. It’s secluded and I’ve heard they don’t have qualms about who spends their money there. Or... we could head to Livi, in Vilaria. Our bounty in that kingdom is pretty low, and I’ve heard the city is quite a good place to indulge in the frivolities of life. Also it has a Wizard’s Guild office, a good starting point to investigate your little orb predicament.”

“Alright, Livi it is!”

A few hours later we descend upon the Restless Valley, the two domes shine with the nocturnal nights. One of them is the entrance to High City of Livi, and over the centuries has become The Lower City, where most people end up living, only high society being admitted through the golden gates.

“Aight, boys! We’ve worked hard and we’ve bled plenty, it’s time to have some fuckin’ fun already, don’t you think!”

“YAARRGH!”

“That’s why we’re here! Just one warning, you sons of bitches! Fuckin’ behave, if I gotta get you out of prison AGAIN I’m gonna make me a necklace with your toes!”

There’s a choir of laughter and they all return to their posts before we descend. The moral is pretty high right now and everybody looks happy, the message I got this morning doesn’t make much sense to me now. Well, I should go back to my quarters and grab my coat.

Nothing missing nor hiding in the closet, nothing strange in the drawers or on the ceiling. But there’s a pile of ashes and hair behind the desk, and they’re still warm. It smells of... flowers mostly.

And there’s a small stone, sort of a amber-colored crystal inside the ashes. It’s warm to the touch too, but I have no idea what it is.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any magic user on board. The Guild prices are pretty high to have a wizard on permanent payroll. The closest thing we have is Pikzul, the alcoholic psychic. Should I call him and show him this or should we just land and get to the city?

The men bring Pikzul, completely wasted, as usual. Is there any time of the day when this guy is sober? I show him the crystal and ask about his opinion and a reading.

“Euh... uh... Oh yeah, I know what this thing is. It’s one of those... those enchanted crystals... There should be another crystal twin to this one. And if you *burp*... Like, if you warm it up with a fire or something, the other crystal will get hot too and stuff like that. And if another person has the other crystal, you should be able to talk with them wherever you are.

Oh, oh yes, the reading... I see, ugh... I see a lot of hate around this crystal. Lots of bad feelings... And a threat. A threat from... the past. Oh wait, or is it the future? Could it be both? And somethin’ about eggs. That’s all.”

Huh. Should I take any other measures about the crystal or should I just pocket it and land in the city already?

Alright, before going down I take a little visit to Meinir and she gives me my new hook and a little cradle extension to put the gem in it.

We land on the city’s port and the doors of Livi open to us. The metal dome replaces the night sky, and the artificial lights blind us for a moment before we get used to the brightness of the city that never sleeps.

I don’t know much about the story of the city, only that it wasn’t built by their current inhabitants but they found this amazing place with intact buildings and mechanisms, and completely empty, and decided that it was a pretty great place to live in.

As always, no matter what time of the day it is, the city is bursting with activity, the streets full of people conducting their business or just enjoying the many activities Livi has to offer to travelers in the look of leisure and pleasure. My crew loudly makes its entrance and direct their steps to the closest bar. I could join them and get drunk out of my mind or maybe do something more relaxing, take a walk and get some time for myself. Maybe the Wizard’s Guild is still open at this hour.

A short hike later I find myself in an empty street, in front of what seems to be the Wizards Guild office in this city. The place looks considerably discreet for wizards standards, just a thin tower with no decorations other than the sign, as many of the buildings in this town. The door seems to be locked.

It looks like you're supposed to knock and then they look out the little hole for passwords or purpose of business. Jeez Captain, haven't you've been in an illegal or controversial establishment before? That door should be entirely natural to a person in your line of work.

Shout to the creeper in the window that staring is rude. You know you've got a great rack now please stop doing the stalking thing unless you have real business. Address him by his cat race so he really does know you're not bullshitting or being paranoid about being watched.

“Alright, here it is. It seems to be cursed I can’t just get it off me.”

The short man leans in and examines the orb closely, first with the monocled eye, then with the other one. After a couple of minutes of study, he nudges it with one of the wands in his pocket. Then another one. Nothing seems to happen. He makes a few attempts to pull the gem, without success. The man keeps a emotionless expression as he talks again.

“Interesting. The artifact doesn’t seem to respond to magic, and thus cannot be identified by such means. In other circumstances I would think this is just a tasteless joke, but I can tell it’s a cursed item. I am afraid I can’t help you.

You should ask another colleague of mine, one well versed about ancient artifacts, special ones. There’s another guild house in the town of Ovrare, to the south. Ask for Old Ragfire. He might be able to help you. Ah, and no need to pay me. Have a good night.”

Yeah, I find it suspicious too, wizards don’t usually give away free advice of any kind, they would charge you for telling you the time of the day if they could. I’ll try to stay on my toes.

I ask him to identify the crystal I found on the ship, giving him one piece of gold. He examines it for a minute and again pokes it with a couple of his wands.

“Yeah, a simple “fartalk” crystal. Simply warm it up, you’ll be able to see and talk through its counterpart, and same happens with the other one.”

“Is there a way to track the other one?”

“Nothing simpler.” --He waves his hand around and a cloud of red mist surrounds the crystal, then he hands it over to me. “I do believe you are some sort of sailor for your attire. Simply hold it high enough on your ship, and it will show you in which direction the twin crystal is located.”

Huh, I guess this wasn’t a complete waste of time, after all.

I eye the shady, robed figure without much interest. It’s a common sight in the back alleys and around inns in any city. The bird is a much interesting sight. For what I know, there are no wild birds in this city with a golden sky and no trees. And this one looks quite fabulous, with its brightly colored plumage. Manny doesn’t seem to like him, for some reason.

The man notices how I admire the bird and approaches me. His breath smells of cider and garlic, and his words come out slurry and annoyingly mellow. He also speaks giving weird and apparently random inflexions to his voice... but he doesn’t seem to be drunk. Maybe he’s just an idiot.

“Strafgeeer, can I interest youuuu in this magfniffifeeeent bird? One of a kiiiind, it is! Forttuuune and riches follow it, compaaanion of kings! And it caaan be yours for merely twenty pieces of silver! An insssignificant price tooo pay, c-consssidering all the riches it will giiiifve you.”

And so the young pirate captain joins her crew inside the dim-lit inn, joining the drunken laughter, the songs, the dance and the stories yelled out loud. After a couple of hours, whoever hasn’t joined the pirates in their revelry, has already abandoned the inn, looking for quieter places to spend their night. And as they finally grow tired and drunk, they begin to collapse. The ones that are still able to walk straight, drag their fallen comrades back to the ship. and as awesome killing in the nude is, it isn't too conductive. On the off chance we can't get our clothes back should we take them all on, we'll be nude and unable to conduct serious business and attract serious attention until we manage to get some.
If we escape out the window, less work and there should be some good time to put clothes on besides just your coat. At least just some pants will do.

No time to get dressed, got my jacket and my boots, the rest will have to wait until we take care of these goons or get back to the ship.

“Meinir, check out the window in our room, I’ll hold’ em back!”

She nods and hurries back, while I just grab the door from the unconscious masked guy and kick it downstairs, sending a few of those losers rolling down.

“A back alley!” -Yells my blacksmith from the room. “But we’re too high to just jump down. Now, jumping towards the next building’s roof should be relatively easy.”

The masked bastards downstairs are regrouping and coming back, and some of them have guns, as they politely remind me when a bullet flies past my ear, crashing against the wall behind me.

Yeah, I need to buy time. The city guard will be here soon, and my crew are probably coming for me at this moment too. If I can only stay alive enough time.

I reach into my pocket and quickly change the hook for the gem holder, showing the orb, currently glowing softly, to her.

“So how about I take your other arm?”

The witch laughs, a creepy shrieking noise that barely sounds like something organic. “You poor idiot, it isn’t fully charged, can’t you see? “

Indeed the orb isn’t shining as brightly as the last time I used it. If at least I knew how to charge it, what causes it to start glowing harder... I feel like I could still try to use it, but I doubt it will have the same effect than last time.

“So you haven’t yet figured it out!? My, you’re even dumber than I tho-- Oooh, I get it now. Those clothes, the pirate ship... you’re an empty one, aren’t you? Not a single drop of magic in you. So you had to leave your home and family and become a harlot to survive. Hahaha! I think I’m making you a favor, putting you out of your miserable existence!”

I try to ignore her taunts, and focus my rage on my favor. If it’s true that magic charges the sphere, it means she can’t use it against me!

“Harlots aren't pirates, Harlots fuck people for cash. I kill people for cash and fuck harlots. Big difference.”

“So cute of you to believe that, dear.”

“Magic will be the death of you. you would avoid being proven wrong by siccing your goons on me instead of a one on one.”

The witch suddenly bursts in laughter.

“Ahahah, oh by the gods. Poor, clueless creature. Do you think the gem gets its energy from the magical forces around it? Ahah, allow me to prove how wrong you are.”

AAAAGH!

Hmnnff... That hurt... I think I’m alright, it was only... pain... no wounds... Gods, it hurts! And she’s right, the sphere hasn’t gotten any brighter.

...But I hear screaming... fighting. Either my crew or the city guards. I need to stay alive... a little longer.

Hmm, girl, with that information, you can't be an empty one or there's another source of energy it draws from.

Was there a particular emotion you were feeling during your descent into the prison? Think girl! Your crew might be related, it could be about the loyalty you feel for them, and as you got closer, the org glowed brighter.

It gained some energy as you tried your best to defend yourself and your lover as you escaped too, selfless acts or acts of loyalty might be the second kind of power source.

She's pretty braggy, so she might reveal the truth. I suggest revealing that you think loyalty or selflessness powers it, to test her reaction. And you got a whole lot of loyalty.

In case I am correct, however, you should focus on thoughts of your crew and how they'll be off without you. You're a great captain, can you really trust someone else to do the job? You give those brigands a home and a family where all would cast them out.

I try to remain calm, reloading my pistol. She just keeps smiling, doesn’t look like she considers herself in a hurry. I point at one of the closest masked goons and shoot him in the face. The rest try to charge against me, but she holds them off, with a slightly interest smile in her face now.

I try to remember how I felt back in the prison, when the sphere started to glow for the first time. I can’t say that I felt especially good. Yeah, loyal I guess, but all I can remember is it being rather gloomy, dark, with all the catacombs, traps and old, dead skeletons left and right. But I gotta keep buying time, so I try to keep her talking. She stares at me intently now, with her hand up like she’s about to smite me.

“So what is it, then? Loyalty? Selflessness powers?“

That actually seems to get her a bit by surprise, as she lowers her hand and doesn’t shoot me with another painful discharge, instead she laughs with that maniac laugh of hers.

“Ahaahah! I can’t believe it! What do you think this is, some old lady’s bedtime tale? What are you going to say next!? True love? Kisses!? AHahahah! I’m almost sorry I’m gonna have to end with this buffoonery and kill you, you’re proving to be quite entertaining, cutie!”

“How boring. You've given up humiliating me.”

I think I might’ve figured it out. I lunge towards another one of the goons and slit his throat with the dagger. The rest of the mob is conflicted between attacking me and following the bitch’s orders. Also it sounds like a fight has started at their rearguard, maybe the city guards finally catching up. Can’t see from here.

The witch seems to be less amused now.

I open my eyes to realize with relief that I’m in my room at the ship, resting on my own bed. My back hurts, and my lower torso does so too, but it’s not as bad as I expected, more like a numb annoyance. I still feel pretty weak, and just turning my head around feels like a titanic effort.

Meinir is here, and also... oh boy, Doctor. Meinir seems to notice my concern, because she smiles and tries to sound reassuring.

“Welcome back cap’n. Don’t worry, I’ve been watching over Creepo here the whole time, and made sure he didn’t take anything out as a souvenir.”

Doctor groans, annoyed, but not particularly indignant. We’re all too aware of his reputation for that.

“Ahem! As I was going to say... Your recovery is astonishing, captain. You’ve got two holes the size of a ChickenChoke* ball in your hips. Don’t know what made them, but they should’ve pulverized bones and organs in their way out. That added to the massive blood loss, should’ve been enough to do you over. But instead, you’ve only got but mild hip fractures. If we find a competent flesh wizard, you’ll be up in no time.

Meinir pushes Doctor out of the room and decides to tell me what happened when I blacked out.

“Well, I don’t know how did you do it, but you managed to burn down every house around you, and all those masked assholes that were after us. I found you in the middle of that circle of glowing fire, bleeding and babbling nonsense.”

“What about that bitch in black robes? Did I kill her?”

“Don’t know. I guess? There was nobody else with you when I got ya, just flames...”

“... So, what have you planned to do next? We’ve already left the city, I don’t think the people of Livi are very happy with us after that huge fight and the houses burning and all that.”

Ugh... I’d rather not have to make my mind now, I still feel pretty crappy. But I guess you can’t afford that when you’re the captain. The wizard dude at the Guild told me to go to Ovrare, where maybe the wizards can inform me about this gem... Or I could swallow my pride and prepare to reopen all the old wounds and head back home, visit my family and ask the wise men of The Ninoth about it. They’re probably the most powerful mystics alive...

So I gotta decide. Also should I ask Meinir about anything else?

“Are you ok? I don’t remember a thing after I slammed that bird-bug thing against the wall.”

“Yeah, you got the worst of the impact and fell down. I couldn’t catch you, barely managed to stay on the Birdril myself. And before you ask, the thing seems to have grown fond of us, for some reason. It’s following us, sleeping on the mast when it gets tired. I guess we’ve got ourselves a pet.”

I nod and pet Manny’s head gently. The mantis happily nibbles on my fingers, gently.

“Did Manny stay here the whole surgery?”

“Your mantis? That’s funny, I didn’t notice it until you mentioned. I didn’t see him come in, so I guess he was.”

“Is the orb still stuck in-- yes it is.. *sigh* of course it is. Did you get my gun?”

“Yeah, of course.”

“Ok, tell the first mate that we’re going to Ovrare.”

I can’t help but to let a bit of relief tinct my voice. Meinir, of course, notices it.

“You can’t be running away from your family forever.”

“I know, I know! I just don’t want to go there unless it’s my last alternative, ok?”

“Alright, don’t worry. Now, you should get some rest, so lean back and relax.”
