Dagny is on a journey.

He never expected to leave the comfort of his warren, but he couldn't ignore the voice in his head any longer. It came to him in the hazy hours, as he awakened in the morning or went to sleep in the night. Always bidding him to head north. Always bidding him to keep it safe.

He has traveled for more days than he cared to count, driven on by the calling. He ran out of food some days ago, and the only water he has been able to drink has been through whatever snow he shoveled into his mouth.

Still he travels forth, moving northward as the light fades and when the wind kicks up the storms. He hides when the skies are calm and bright, because he knows that he is being hunted from above.

The trip today has been as eventful as any day. Dagny is hungry, but still has no food. His progress is slow, as although his hands and feet are no longer wracked with pain, he can scarcely feel them at all.

Head to the trees. They will provide cover from hunters, warmth if you can get a fire going and food if you can hunt.

The voice comes from Dagny's glass. He found it after there was some manner of fight above his warren, and only heard the voice afterwards. It is very small and weak, but it is still clear to Dagny. He keeps it in hand during his quest, he feels almost like it is protecting him as much as he protects it. When he looks down at it at night, he can see a bright light in it. Most of the time he only sees his face.

Off toward the horizon, Dagny can see some trees over to one side, and what looks like something poking out from under the snow off to the right. Whatever it is, it must be fairly large to be visible from here.

Dagny is worried about being able to see to the horizon. If the storms are letting up, he'll need to find someplace to hide, and soon. Should he make for the trees, for whatever is poking out of the snow, or should he stop where he is and burrow into the thickly-packed snow and ice he is walking on?

Dagny decides to head for the trees, since there may be food there and he can certainly get cover. It's still snowing enough that it should hopefully cover his tracks before anything that may be following him can find them.

There is no immediate sign of food here, but Dagny is certain that he won't be spotted from the air. He could try to move on, or stop to rest for a while. He used up a lot of energy making haste to the trees, and he still doesn't have any food.

Dagny decides to rest for a while, and climbs up into one of the trees to look around while he does. It isn't easy with his limbs numb, but he makes it up.

He can eat just about anything that would be considered food, he's pretty hardy even if he's not particularly tough. He is partial to fish, but it doesn't seem like there's any chance of finding those. Plants and Meat are all fair game, though. He finds some small, barky seed pods on the tree that seem sticky on his gloves. He ordinarily wouldn't want to eat something like this, but he hasn't eaten for days and isn't sure when he might get another chance for a meal.

Surveying the area, he can get a look at the object poking out of the snow from another angle. It looks like it's quite a bit wider than he first thought, and it looks like a bunch of small sticks or branches are poking up at the far side, like some sort of thicket.

With the storm dying down, Dagny decides to rest in the tree until it starts to get dark. He decides to try eating one of the seed pods, but the exterior is extremely woody; and while there is a short hint of sweetness it is quickly overpowered by an overwhelming bitterness. Dagny retches after swallowing the pod, but manages to keep from vomiting. He still feels hungry, and he might be able to eat more of the pods. He isn't sure if it's a very good idea, though.

Under the cover of darkness, he slips over toward the thicket. As he approaches, he notices that it is actually made of a bunch of independent sticks that have been piled in such a way as to create a shelter. Much of it appears to have collapsed, and Dagny thinks that if it was made by a person it must have been a long time ago. He wonders whether or not he should go around and see if anything remains underneath the remaining lean-to.

Dagny pauses to think about his pursuers. He knows for certain that he is being hunted by the Sky Men. During his travels north, he stowed away on a Trader's vessel to speed his travel. While the ship was stopped briefly at a port, the Sky Men came aboard looking for him. The Traders got them to leave before they could locate Dagny, but it gave him quite a shock. He is fairly certain he has seen them soaring above on more than one occasion while he was laying low, as well.

Dagny creeps a little closer to the creature. He tries to whisper to it, but his throat cracks as he attempts to speak and he mostly manages to produce a dry wheeze.

Unfortunately, Dagny doesn't know very much about the animals where he lives, let alone the animals this far north. He's pretty sure that it's probably not a person, because everyone knows that The Meek are the smallest of all people. And since Dagny is Meek, and this is smaller than him, it probably is not a person. He has no idea whether or not it is dangerous.

Dagny ponders for a second, and reaches the conclusion that the creature is probably like The Meek enough to have milk. He hasn't had any water for a while now, and could go for a drink.

Dagny panics, flailing around and dashing the animal against the sticks. He loses his balance in his flailing and falls backwards into the snow, with the creature writhing and clawing and biting at his face. In an act of desperation, Dagny bares his teeth and chomps down on the back of its neck. The animal squeals and twitches a few times, then goes limp in Dagny's grip.

The most respectful thing you can do is make sure it doesn't go to waste. Does the glass that gives off light also give off heat? You could tear off some pieces of cloth from your rags for tinder and use the glass for a base if it heats up, and find the driest wood you can to try and make a fire.

Dagny's Glass doesn't make any heat, it just shows light sometimes. Not always, though.

Dagny also doesn't really know how to build a fire. Even if he did, all he has is his stone knife and the Seed Pods he gathered. He just doesn't have the materials.

Using his knife to cut away some of the animal's heavily-furred skin, Dagny leans in close and takes a prospective bite out of its fleshy underbelly. The raw flesh makes him gag, but he again manages to calm his stomach enough to swallow. The meat is almost tasteless, but it is lean and still warm. He finds each bite coming more swiftly than the last, pushing his face into the torn body of the small animal in his almost-forgotten desire to sate his hunger. His revulsion does not stop the feeling of relief he gets from the creature's rapidly cooling blood coursing across his cold-ravaged throat.

He eagerly feasts through the night, finding himself gnawing at the animal's bones before he stops. For the first time in days, Dagny's hunger has abated. It doesn't make him feel all that much better, though.

Dagny can't get completely under the bush, it's too densely packed and low to the ground. He backs as far against it as he can.

When he inspects his foot, he finds that the cloth wrappings he has been using for a boot have soaked through! He removes them in order to inspect his foot underneath. The flesh is pallid, with a vaguely purple tinge. It looks blistery, but it doesn't hurt. It appears that some of the blisters have ruptured. This is the first time Dagny has removed his 'boots' since he started the journey, and the sight is very shocking to him.

Dagny stays mostly still, but he manages to free one of his hands from whatever is binding him. There is something wrapped around it, but he doesn't know what it is. He still can't feel his hands or feet.

He calls out to whomever might be nearby, trying to find out what is going on. He feels a low reverberation rumble through him as a low, husky voice responds.

So, you have awakened at last. This is not a safe place for the Meek. Had I not found you, you would surely have died. You may still.'

Dagny swallows, noticing that his throat is less dry and sore. He considers how to respond, but then the voice continues.

'I am Amalthea, of the Keepers. What is your business here? Surely you are aware of the risks to your life. The Meek value comfort above all else, and there can surely be none for you this far north.'

Dagny isn't sure how to respond. His glass has not spoken since he awakened. Perhaps it spent its voice before Dagny lost consciousness.

'If you have business with the Keepers, you may remain until it is completed. Our hearths remain open to all who visit in order to understand our ways. Though the Hallucinations of a Meek wandering the wastes are not likely to amount to anything of meaning.'

'Nothing that large has been seen in our skies. If someone was pursuing you for some shard of glass, they have clearly given up the chase. Perhaps you should wait until you are well-rested and can recall your journey with more clarity.'

Dagny tells Amalthea about the light in the glass at night. He can still feel the bundled glass at his side, and manages to fish it out. He nudges the heavy blanket up in order to lean out and hand her the shard. He shudders at the sudden exposure to cold air, but is distracted as he gets a look at his apparent rescuer. He has never met one before, but from the stories he was told back in the Warren, she appears to be one of The Chosen.

Amalthea doesn't know what to make of this.

She left her village the previous evening to hunt, but the spirit she sent in search of prey led her to a Meek. Finding a Meek this far north was something she never expected, let alone one actually seeking her people.

While his intentions are commendable, his story is difficult to understand. He has shown himself to be a credit to his people by even making it as far, but that only means so much.

He appears to have fallen asleep after handing her his 'magic glass.' It is a shard of ... something ... of surprisingly large size for the Meek to have carried this far, wrapped in a small cloth. He is currently on her back, shifting and periodically making a strange sucking sound as he murmurs in his sleep.

Amalthea knows that she won't be able to reach the village before nightfall while traveling at a slow enough pace for Dagny to rest, but her hunting camp is on the way. She could choose to stop there for the evening and build a fire, or just push on to the village even after it gets dark. She considers what would be best for her and her charge.
>>

A fire would be best. In fact, making a fire as soon as possible is best, since treating frostbite yields the best results when the most non-damaging heat is applied. Though that's easiest when you can immerse them in hot water.

Don't change your pace.

If you think Dagny's condition is severe enough that staying a night would worsen it, and can get back to the village without causing yourself any problems, then it's probably worth it to push on through the night and get to the village as soon as possible.

On the other hand, if staying a night en route is unlikely to affect Dagny's condition, there's probably no reason to push yourself unnecessarily. I'm assuming you've got a better read on how he's doing than he or we do.

I would suggest pushing on until you reach the village. This creature's life in in the palm of your hand, and finding someone who could treat his state could be the difference between life, death, or paraplegia.

Also, perhaps you should ask if he would mind traveling any faster. Short-term discomfort is probably worth a saved limb or two.

Amalthea considers what she has at her camp. While she could gather her bow and build a fire, there aren't adequate water supplies, nor containers, to soak the pitiful Meek in order to aid its recovery. Instead, she opts to set out for the village, with the intention of getting him care as swiftly as possible.

As the sky fades steadily into darkness and the Gods look down upon the world again, the Chosen keeps her pace. While she would appreciate rest, she knows that it isn't necessary and she could likely maintain this pace for at least another full day and night before she begin to truly feel the effects of exhaustion.

Soon the barren wastes of the ice flats give way to the occasional evergreen, marking the path towards her village. As she traverses the field of trees, however, she hears a familiar sound. She and Dagny are not alone in this copse on this night.

Amalthea is sure that the hulking shape lurking behind the tree is a Gogrut -- a fairly large, tusked, territorial predator. They can be dangerous, but Amalthea already knows that she can hunt and slay them. However, she has never done so while carrying a fragile, beleaguered package before.

Amalthea scoops Dagny up off of her back, cradling him against her shoulder. He stirs at the sudden movement and change of position, but Amalthea shushes him before he can make any noises.

Holding her spear out in front of her, she slowly circles around the Gogrut, taking a wide berth around the copse of trees in which it is residing. The beast remains wary, but stays safely at bay until Amalthea has rounded the copse. She knows that she can outrun the Gogrut easily - While it may be able to match speed with her over a short distance it can't maintain the pace for as long as she can. With the Gogrut behind her, she continues her trek toward her village.

Dagny weighs practically nothing to Amalthea, even if she was carrying a healthy Meek she would scarcely notice. Cradling him will also make it easier for her to hurry forward if the need arises, and he seems plenty comfortable where he is.

The shard appears to reflect the light while pointing at the sky, which puzzles Amalthea, but she decides to continue on in order to get Dagny to her home quickly. She walks on through the night, and as day begins to break she sees her village in the distance, nestled into a valley as the terrain becomes more hilly.

As she approaches, the night guard posted comes out to great her.

'Good Morning, Mistress Amalthea!

'Good Morning, Kleo. Vigilant as usual, I see.'

Kleo was one of Amalthea's many students. She was barely an adult, but her enthusiasm and physical prowess led her to exell at taking down large prey.

'As always! Did the hunt fare poorly? It is unusual to see you return so lightly burdened.'

Amalthea has known Kleo since her youth, and knows simply that Kleo likes the way her cloak looks. As the chosen, they have no need for any manner of protection from the elements -- while within their own lands clothing is worn only for utility or personal preference.

Even still, Amalthea would never demand Kleo's clothing. She is a valiant hunter and protector, despite her foibles. Amalthea is proud of her subordinate.

Amalthea gives Kleo a brief description of the hunt's events as they walk toward the healer's cabin. She mentions the oddity of the spirit seeking out the Meek, and the peculiar glass he carried. As they reach their destination, Kleo breaks away to return to her watch.

Amalthea enters the cabin to find the healer talking with Mat, a Wayward pilgrim who has been staying with the keepers for several weeks. The healer seems annoyed at the prospect of using his craft on a mere Meek, but sets to work immediately.

Shortly thereafter, before a bath can even be drawn for Dagny, Kleo bursts into the building.

Probably those 'sky men'.
We can probably beat them in a fight in it comes to that, so talking to them sounds good.

"Flock?" ...The Sky Men?

There's a pretty good chance they saw you take Dagney, or guessed it when you headed back without a kill. Why else are they asking for the huntmaster directly? Still, there's no reason to not hear what they have to say right now.

We should meet them, but expect trouble. We may have to kill them. Perhaps you could bring someone to assist you in case there's a fight?

Amalthea and Kleo head toward the town's outskirts, where two of the Flock are waiting. The flock are considerably smaller and more frail than the Chosen, so Amalthea is not particularly worried about them starting a physical confrontation. With two Chosen there, they should almost certainly be cowed enough to avoid a fight.

'I am Amalthea, Hunter of the Keepers. Do you come to learn the old ways? Or do you come seeking something else?'

The larger of the two flock begins to step forward, but the slimmer one puts a wing aside to stop him and then bows courteously.

'Greetings, Lady Amalthea. My name is Bryg, and this is my associate Stuvaxy. What we seek is not your teachings. Our lord has tasked us to retrieve a missing object of great sentimental value, and in pursuit of the lowly thief who stole it we have come to your lands.'

Stuvaxy seems somewhat tense and retless, but Bryg remains collected. Despite their differing demeanors, both exude an air of confidence. If nothing else, they certainly aren't afraid. She can also see, quite plainly, that the two carry weapons.

'Our search may take some time, and we will need to remain in the area until we either find our quarry or sign that he has left. We have decided to seek you out, that we may ask for permission to hunt wild game on your lands while we remain. It would be ... inconvenient, after all ... to enter into conflict with the Chosen.'

Kleo stands by, waiting patiently for Amalthea to speak. She needs to choose how to respond to the travelers.

Do this. It is still a valid response.

Ask what the object is and why it's important. Act like it isn't obvious what they're talking about.
>>

can you tell us of the object so if you or your hunters finds it they will know what it is. if they tell you honestly then they may hunt, since they decided to be honest. if they don't or avoid the question or lie then don't permit them. hiding it means it isn't sentimental but has a power they don't want you to know of.

Just hunting? Fine, whatever. Do what you regularly do in diplomacy with other races in deals like these, limit them to a certain amount as to not hog all the food to themselves, etc.
Just do your standard amounts and stuff. I'm sure you've done this before with previous conflicts. No need to be any different from this time, maybe forbay them from coming close within your sanctuary and interacting with the other keepers. If they ask why, say you can't afford distractions this winter, and whatever isn't the keeper's business will be ignored. Our business is ours, their business is theirs. Let's keep out of each other's way.

something is wrong here. the meek did not seem to be a thief, and it is unlikely that these two would chase someone into this land for a purely sentimental item. the shard likely is important, and may have been influencing the meek. we don't know much about this situation, but these two are almost certainly lying, and that makes them rather untrustworthy. if you turn them down flat they may attack, so i'd recommend giving them permission to hunt game but give no further aid.

Say that they may hunt in your lands while they pursue the thief. Ask them for a description of the thief and the stolen item, so that you may share it with the village guards and hunters. Ask how to contact them if you or your comrades find the thief or the stolen object. If they press to enter the village to search, politely decline, and tell them that your people are more than capable of finding and subduing a single thief that would try to hide in our settlement.

This seems best.

And yes, if they withhold obvious information, then deny them access.

yes, let them. you may be able to extract information on the shard from them later on. but not now. now is too suspicious. wait for Dagny to recover and talk to him about it first.

'You may hunt in these lands as long as it suits your needs. We tend to the world, it is not our place to own it.'

Bryg bows once again.

The hospitality of the Keepers does not fail to echo the stories. If only the land itself shared as much.

The two Bird Men turn to leave, but Amalthea speaks before they can take wing.

'Before you leave, perhaps you could tell us who this thief you are seeking is, and what has been taken?'

'The thief who currently carries the object is one of the Meek, from the southern ports. That he is meek should be enough, as they never venture this far north.

Should you find him, Burn this. We should be able to spot the signal from far away, especially in such a barren land as this.'

Bryg pokes his beak down into his robe, flicking his head forward and tossing a small pouch to Amalthea.

'And the stolen item?'

Bryg turns and begins walking away, Stuvaxy following close behind.

'As I told you, an object of great personal value to our lord, though little monetary value. If the Meek is found, he will have the item. If he does not, we can determine to whom he gave it. You needn't concern yourself with that.'

And with that, the two launch themselves into the sky and begin sailing off into the distance.

Kleo turns to face Amalthea.

So, they're after that Meek you brought in from the ice flats, right? I suppose it is fortunate that they don't know you brought him here. But I didn't know that he was a thief. I doubt the elders will permit him to stay long.

Tell her it is not confirmed yet that the meek is a thief. We need to speak with him about how he found it, presuming he survives.

Just calmly tell her that you need to gather all of the facts before making a judgement like that

they claim the object is important for their lord but refuse to tell you what it is. they are lying. we must have the meek's side of the story.

It is unknown wether this Mook is truly a thief, or if they simply want what he has. We must not act hastily.

Tell Kleo that the mere fact that this Meek "thief" fled here, of all places, is odd enough to raise your suspicion. You'd like to hear his side of the story before you decide to hand him over.

It's important to find out what the object is before giving it up. The Meek thought it was worth his life. Telling them you have it without being willing to give it up will only lead to needless bloodshed.
