he has a pretty drink. also, were you dreaming? something about an orc invasion and you standing to fight it off. rather heroic.

anyway, if you don't have a hangover yet you should get something that makes it less horrid while you can. if you do then make him go get something.

OH GOD LOOK AT HOW FRUITY FAER'S DRINK IS. IT'S SO ADORABLE. Also since you're probably pretty hung over at the moment, you should drink it. Hair of the Bearhound that bit you or something? Otherwise... aside from those two, what about Eline and Mary? And where's your pal Huge-gor?

I'm quite all right with getting Eline in serious trouble. Let's be honest, she deserves it. Adorable little girl or no, she's a gifted mage who refused to actually go to school and learn to be responsible for her powers and instead went out and became a tool for people to use to accomplish nefarious deeds. Oh but it's okay, since she's so NICE, right? I don't really care how "nice" Eline is or how nice Eline thinks Mary is, what matters is what they do.

She was a little girl who escaped the lifetime prison sentence she faced because of who her parents were, and clung to whoever was willing to help her.

You're confusing education with indoctrination, and she has only shown herself to lack wisdom, not knowledge.

Where you getting that from, buddy? And by Education I did MEAN learning responsibility and all that. Don't nitpick on the details. I don't care if she thought things were unfair for her. By both her nature and her actions she's someone with a lot of power, and she's shown a remarkable lack of willingness to be responsible for that power.

Ugh, sorry, but I didn't catch all of that. I have one hell of a headache right now, so making all of you guys out at once is kinda tough. Something about eyes, and El...

Wait a second, you guys are back? Interesting. I had Faer take a look at you guys earlier, but we're not sure how to turn you on and off. Faer gave a big speech about contextual activation or something, but most of it flew right over my head. For now, I guess you just blink on and off at random.And... If I head you right, you can see bits of dreams, apparently. Sorry to disappoint you if you were looking to analyze the last dream, but that one wasn't anything special. I dream about invasions and battles all the time, really - Orcs, Goblins, Barbarians, Zombies, Drow on a really good night... Big armored guy was new though. Looked like a heavily armored Ogre or something.

I should probably catch you up on a few things. Mary's gonna be fine, but she's refusing to talk to anyone. We haven't judged Mary or her buddies The Pack yet. There was gonna be a party after we did, but a messenger came with orders from the High Knight himself, saying to delay the judgement ritual until he arrived. So... I guess we threw the party a bit early.

"Hey, uh... how long until the High Knight gets here?"
>"You still have a few hours before he gets here, I think. In the meantime, the camp's demonologist wanted to get a look at you. I told him about your run-in with Zebble earlier, and he just wanted to make sure you were alright. And uh... I haven't seen Hyugore since the party, and I was hoping you would help me look for him."
"Sure thing... but, speaking of things that are missing, any idea where the top half of my armor is right now?"
>"Oh! Uh, yes. You probably should have full armor on when the High Knight arrives. I'm... Not exactly sure where that went."
"Wonderful."

Well then, looks like we've got a few hours to check in with the Demonologist, find Hyugore, and locate the upper half of my armor. I'm not... Particularly in the mood for thinking too much right now, so how about I let you guys decide which one we tackle first. I'll explain what's happened since we left a bit more on the way.

Ask Faer if he can start asking around about your chestplate while you get checked out by the demonologist.

Oh, while you're there how about you go ahead and ask the demonologist about Hobgoblins.
Should be fun.
>>

I vote for checking on the prisoners. Generally speaking, our being present means something big's going to happen soon, and while the High Knight showing up and your whole Judgment Ritual might qualify for that, a Prison Break might as well.

"Faer, I'm gonna check in with the camp's demonologist. Think you could ask around about my armor while I'm there? We can figure out where the big man went afterwards."
>"Alright."
"See you in a bit."
>Wait..."
"Hm?"
>"Well erm, I... well, I was thinking that, pertaining to the previous night's festivities, the... well, following the LAST celebration we attended, and, correct me if I'm wrong, I do remember having a conversation pertaining to you and uh, personal restraint that, taking the events of last night into consideration I think may have been... uh, forgotten? Perhaps? I'm not going to accuse you of ignoring it, and if you did that would be uh, that would be partially my fault..."
"Faer."
>"...and, of course, that all pertains to the conversation having actually occurred, which, I may be mistaking about! Perhaps I only said to myself "I should probably address matters of personal restraint with Lin" but never got around to it which is very much a possibility..."
"Faer."
>"But my point is that, well, as a friend sometimes I get a bit worried about... well, "problems" certainly isn't the right word, but perhaps "habits?" Certain habits that, erm, for example, I think the simple fact that you woke up this morning on a table with half your armor and no recollection of your actions the previous... erm, well, I think the point is that I just wanted to uh, perhaps discuss some concerns of mine about, uh, well..."
"Faer. Can... whatever it is you're going on about wait a bit?"

Hmm? That's uh... What? Orkish folklore, I think? Ancient Knight, Killed Garbag the Great, Destroyed tribe Grool? I'd have to ask Faer - I'm not too keen on Orc history, but yeah, I've heard that one before.

Big black armor... Horned Helmet... Hmm, that would fit the description, but I don't really see how that would be prophetic unless the guy had managed to live a few thousand years and spontaneously decided to invade Ution.

>Are you sure you're a real demonologist?
Am I a real Demonologist? Do elves have big ears? Do humans have small ears from the perspective of an Elf? Do Half-Elves have medium-sized ears from the perspective of both humans and elves? I have asked four questions, and the answer to all of them is "yes!"

I assure you, magical talking ball, that I am as qualified a demonologist as any. In fact, probably more so than most - I spent five years possessed by a demon myself, so I know the ins and outs of how they work. The Sons of De Jústus hired me on as their demonologist after helping expel the foul demon from by body, and I have been traveling between paladin camps in the Outlands, studying demons and demon-based afflictions for the past thirty years!

My apologies for being so quick to judge, it's just that I already found one ball that... wait, should I be... Ah, what the heck, I'll let you in on my secret, but you gotta promise not to tell anyone, okay?

You see, last night after the party, I was watching the paladins in the female camp while they slept uh, because demonic possession commonly occurs when you sleep. The young girl whose mother is coming to pick her up today, Eline, they were letting her sleep in the girls' camp, and usually I wouldn't have paid much attention to her since she's a bit too young for mfor demons to hold interest in. But I noticed something around her neck - an eyeball, just staring back at me.

So I plucked it off while she slept and lo and behold, it's a demonic Artifact! I get visions of an armored demon from the Abyss, who started ranting about conquest and scouting. I plan to show it to the High Knight today. Until then, the eyeball has been safely stashed away in my undergarments for safe keeping!
>>
No. 352650 ID: f599e6

that was warpath not a demon. the eye is just a link. taking it probably made him mad at you personally. and putting it in your underwear probably made it worse. he is going to kill you so hard when he comes.
we know this cause we talked to him already and managed to make him pick a slightly less outright destructive path. so yeah, good job dude, you pissed off an immortal (basically demigod) of war.
>>
No. 352656 ID: f29f63

Yeah, I know you have the best of intentions, but Warpath is very dangerous. Have you heard of hobgoblins? This fellow is an immortal one who did some pretty big things. Including kicking the rear of an entire orc tribe and quite possibly killing a giant.

However, right now he's playing nice. He's going to come, but he's coming in a certain way at a certain time. We want to basically make it so that you guys have a chance to stop him before it's too late. Heck, he wants that as well.

Problem is, we don't know what happens when he gets mad. I do not know about you, but when someone who's a living god decides to stop playing nice, very few people walk away smiling.

For now, I suggest you give that eyeball back to the girl. It won't possess her so you have no worries of that and right now she's the best holder of that eye.

Ugh, yes, we knew about Warpath's eye and his plan to invade. We were trying to convince him to change his strategy to something you would be better prepared to fight, so taking it away right now just made things worse.
Well, since the damage is done you probably should hand it over to the High Knight. Also tell him that Warpath can see and hear everything around it or the one who holds it, which is why it was so much safer to leave it with Eline and let her stay with Mary since then the immortal warlord bent on conquering this land and plunging it into eternal torment wouldn't have seen much of anything beyond the medical tent and prisoner area. As opposed to, you know, everything there is to see in a demonologist's office.
It didn't occur to you that an animated eye pendant might be a scrying focus?

Moving right along...
As far as Eline goes? It's best if she not return home. She was miserable there, and it seems like she may have been subject to abuse. More importantly, she's also been afflicted by whatever Warpath uses to make people do his bidding. Imagine, if you will, the consequences of him subverting her entire order to his will.
We need to make sure it's safe for her to return home on both counts before we can even consider allowing it to happen.

That is, of course, completely ignoring the... sensitive nature of her relationship with Mary. Eline and Mary are rather devoted to each other, and that should be considered when weighing the options.

Can we count on you to see to it that Eline is kept here until these concerns are addressed?
>>

Important things to note.
-Eline is an ignorant girl who needs to be taught responsibility and discipline, but she's not meant to do any outright 'evil.' Rather, she just allows herself to be used by others with less pure intentions.
-As for the rest of The Pack, Mary's pretty much a common thief with a talent for being in the right place at the right time. Or, the wrong place at the wrong time, depending on your perspective. The elf and dwarf, though, really are criminals who ought to be fully prosecuted and given no leeway.
-Warpath is a big problem for you all. You have some of the gist of it but he's really capable of delivering on his threats of just wiping out a large section of Ution and setting up a dungeon just to see if there are any worthy individuals who would be able to challenge him.
-The Paladin recruit Ath is a paladin accepted by your deity but he is not what he seems. He is a Changeling and I advise that to be taken into consideration. He has committed crimes for which he has provided insufficient evidence or reasoning to imply he's innocent or even virtuous, yet he has been accepted as a paladin. Of specific note, in his crimes, are the willful dealing with a devil in creating a contract, as well as the willful attempt to 'marry' a human woman (with all that entails) knowing what happens to the offspring of one such as himself.
-More news at Nine.

>You shoved the eye of an ancient warlord into your pants, dumbass.
Are... Are you sure? I mean... He seemed like a demon, to me. His eyes were glowing, and he had a really deep, booming voice. Which would also dot the description of someone who has made a demonic pact, true. And... And you say he is a large threat? Well, if this were simply a demon, placing his source of communication in my underwear would have solved the issue but if this is something bigger... Which is what you have implied...

>You aren't a real demonologist, are you?
Yes! Yes I am! Just because I haven't read the so-called experts' books doesn't mean that I'm not qualified! I base my work off of first hand experience! Just because the books say that there's "proper" ways to handle things doesn't mean they're the only way! Of course... if the eyeball in my undergarments isn't demonic, I may need some time to think about the proper method of dealing with it.

>Give it back
By the goddess, no! If this thing is a source of communication for this warlord, then the High Knight must see it! Then again... My treatment of his eye has probably made him angry, and returning it to the girl would probably appease him. I... will need some time to consider the situation...

>Also, new guy's a changeling.

he stole eline's eye necklace thing cause it looked at him. we told him that she wont like that and IT wont like it. not sure what it can do but making a talking eyeball mad is probably never a good idea. just told him what was up. but now he wants to both give it back and take it to the high knight. we recommended giving it back.

I don't think that guy is really qualified for his job. He says that he "bases all his work off of first hand experience". He has no formal training. Also, He is a pervert. He watches the women while they're sleeping. That is how he found the eyeball in the first place. PLEASE report him to your superior as soon as possible.

This guy makes Mark look like like an old professional, and yes I'm talking about how Mark accidentally burned down a town.

Late last night he snuck into the women's sleeping area for a drunk girl to 'seduce' and stole Eline's eyeball amulet because it looked creepy. He only confirmed it was bad news when he got in touch with Warpath and pissed him off.

As far as what he did after that?
Let me repeat some of the exchange:
>>You aren't a real demonologist, are you?
>Yes! Yes I am! Just because I haven't read the so-called experts' books doesn't mean that I'm not qualified! I base my work off of first hand experience! Just because the books say that there's "proper" ways to handle things doesn't mean they're the only way! Of course... if the eyeball in my undergarments isn't demonic, I may need some time to think about the proper method of dealing with it.

I have to ask: Is this guy a paladin, or is he an outside 'expert'? Are you sure he's a paladin?

Anyway, now that Warpath knows that the paladins know about his scouting amulets and the people he has under his sway, you need to make sure that Eline does not go home. She's far from the only one to have one of those amulets, and he's likely going to send others to retrieve her.
Instead of sending Eline home you should convince the High Knight to send some Paladins there instead. Since it's such a sensitive location you need to find every person there with an eye amulet, quarantine them, and confiscate the artifacts.

The sudden urgency is easy to explain.
Warpath's priority has been to gather as much information as possible, which until now meant having his scouts work slowly to avoid arousing suspicion. Now he knows his scouting has been discovered his reason for caution is gone and he only has a little time left before his scouts are captured or killed.

Eline needs to stay here where she can be observed to determine how Warpath has been controlling her. When we spoke to her she seemed to honestly believe that trying to stop Warpath was a doomed effort, and that he would kill fewer people if she scouted for him.
Don't judge her harshly if it turns out he controlled her with words alone; beyond being a child, she was raised to be naive.

Speaking of your dream, can you finish this for us? It goes:
When lands slip into to darkness, tormented by plague and blight
The paladins will always stand to pull them to the light
The goddess watches over us until the job is done
And those who die in battle die as martyrs for her son

When chaos and despair consume the lands from west to east
The paladins will always stand as upholders of peace
The goddess watches over us until the day is won
And those who die while fighting die as martyrs for her son...

Yea, she's showing off and trying to put you off-balance so she can control the situation.
This is bad for you, since you need to keep control in order to prevent her from leaving with Eline before the High Knight can check her over and review the demonic spying artifact she was 'willfully' carrying around.
Keep on your toes and stay deadpan professional the entire time. We'll feed you information and responses so you can engage in the sort of verbal battle she's going to go for.

Remember, these are advisers to kings you're dealing with. If you falter she'll take Eline immediately and leave people convinced that you're entirely to blame if that causes something horrible to happen.

"I would apologize if that wasn't your intent.
I can take you to meet with your child, but you'll be leaving alone or later than you intended; a situation has arisen which requires the High Knight's review and judgement.

Most people also aren't lucky enough to ever witness such a display of raw arcane power...

First of all, grow some balls. Secondly... I don't like the way her face is consistently hidden. Do you know of any information that ONLY Eline's mother would know, that you might subtly (as inproficient with such things as you are) ask her of? To make sure, you know, she's not an impostor. I'm not sure how many people might have known she'd be coming here, but with last night's drunken partying it's rather difficult to say who's tongue may have wagged. If nothing else, Eline should be able to vouch for her, but for all we know that might be too late.

Anyway, regarding the eye-pendants (cause Eline's not the only one with them), and since SOME people are less inclined to share important information with you, they are devices used by a warlord of ancient lore who desires to conquer part of Ution (at least) and is spying through them to take stock of its defenses and possible threats to him. Therefore, yes, Eline is participating as an aid to a hostile invasion force. More news at eleven.

Her face might just be hidden to make her look more mysterious. Seeing her face would not be of much use anyway because an imposter with the resources to make a portal like that could probably get a disguise spell. And how would a paladin know personal information about a guild mage?
Besides, we will be taking her to meet Ellen, who would notice if something were noticeably off.

she is using compulsion magic. she could be makin you think what she is saying is the truth even when it isn't. the high knight may not of talked to her at all but because she said he did you believe it.

We said the eyes were harmless for two reasons:
1: They are passive, and thus pose no immediate threat.
2: We needed you behaving as if you were unaware to keep Warpath from realizing his scouting method was about to be purged, and considering how easy it is to read body language that means you needed to be kept in the dark.
3: You have a mandate of honesty, meaning you need to be kept away from secrets and deception.

We don't like doing that to our friends, but when the lives of everybody on this continent are on the line we don't have many choices but to make do.

It really, REALLY looks like she's manipulating you magically. You're a type-A Alpha personality; this behavior is severely deviant from projections. You don't have any protections from charm magic, do you.

She is bending you to her will. Realize this and fight it.

"Physically? Excellent. She's probably healthier than she's ever been.
Mentally? I can't answer that in the open like this.
Emotionally? Worried about the two scumbags she befriended, but worried sick over the third pack member with whom she has a mutual love of unknown depth.

Overall? Two of the pack are monsters that can rot for all I care, but I've little doubt that if it weren't for Mary then Eline would be dead or worse."

>She's using charm magic.
It's not that she's.... It's not... Dammit. no, it's not magic. At least, if it is, it's not doing too much.

Shit, I thought I could handle it this time. It's just, when you deal with authority figures like this... most people don't get to see members of the Guild of Mages, you know? They're very important people and there's just a certain way you're supposed to address a person like that. I'm not as sophisticated or smart or have the standing that people like this do, and they just, I'm the captain of one of the gods know how many paladin squads out here, and she's in the damn Guild. I know by now that the only way you get taken seriously by these kind of people is to show respect.

I mean, you guys were saying to play it cool and I was going to try, but we're dealing with someone who's... In a very prominent position of authority, and when they address you directly it's just, the first thing that you're supposed to do is kneel, because they're people who need respect. With all of this talk about warlords and scrying eyeballs, and you're saying she might have something to do with it, or the Guild , or... you guys, you're accusing some serious shit about some really powerful people. When someone like addresses you it's... You just don't have enough time to consider that! It's hard to think "I need to play it cool and keep control of the conversation" all you think is "kneel down, it's a goddamn Archmage." And once you're down on one knee, you can't just get up, because now you've got their attention and if you just get up they'll think you don't respect them...

I wasn't expecting her to address me first. It caught me off guard, and I just did the first thing that came to mind. After I did there wasn't much else to do.

"Physically she's fine, Milady. She's concerned about the fate of her friends, but the Elf and the Dwarf were abusing her magical talents to bolster the power of their own spells. The leader, Mary, was unaware of this, and we think she played a large role in keeping her safe, both from the dangers of the Outlands and the other Members of the Pack."

Its different giving orders to your men and someone like her. that there's just a certain way you need to be presenting yourself, because if you just make demands, they don't... That's just, it's the proper way you should address...

Shit, this is embarassing. we'll talk about this some other time. After we discuss this and this shit about invading warlords... We need to bring it all up to the High Knight when he arrives.

You can't see her face, but we can. This is the sort of woman who would enforce a 'no pets' rule by slaughtering any animals Eline brought home.
She is going to kill the three of them both for harming her daughter and to punish her daughter. She wants Eline to not want to ever leave home again out of the certainty that any friends she makes will die horribly.

"No, M'lady. While in our custody we are dutybound to keep them safe until judged, and a mother who would stay her hand against those who harmed her child is not worth respect.

The Elf and the Dwarf are likely to face execution after judgement, and you may request that duty.

Geez none of you have any tact. Magic rarely manifests itself outside of certain bloodlines. Even then you'll usually only end up with one potenial  Mage to every five normal babies born, and only a fraction of them ever actually learn how to use magic. Mages are valued for their talents, but most people are too weary of what they can do for you to see many living in towns and cities. Most of them either travel and offer their services, or live in secluded huts near populated areas and let people looking for potions or charms come to them. As useful as magic is, people tend to get nervous when mages stick around their town for too long.

The Guild is different, though. They're ancient, respected, and her position in it doesn't just mean that she's a powerful Mage. It means that she likely has a finger in politics all throughout Ution. Meeting people like her is a bit... I just slipped up, is all. maybe once you meet the high knight your awe limit will be raised and all the other big peeps wont seem so impressive anymore. anyway, now seems like a good time to tell you what's up with the eyes.

warpath is still alive, his immortality and power and devil granted. but as long as eline had the eye he was calm and reasonable. he wants someone to kill him, not give up of course, but to find someone or group of someones that can beat him in a real battle. but by our demonologist 'friend' taking it it has made him upset. i dunno about you but upsetting someone like warpath sounds like a bad idea. we also talked at length with him and convinced him to look into other things then outright conquering this place. simply put, having eline keep it was for the best. and not telling you is because you are bound by duty to tell the truth if someone asks.

We've no DIRECT evidence of this.
And I'm pretty damn sure that Warpath's stated intention was always to carve a hole through Ution and set up a dungeon, killing thousands in the resulting war, before getting to the point where he figured any individuals small-groups of worthy opponents would be able to find him. Anyone 'defending' Warpath here is trying to deceive you.

>Throw us into the house.
The house is just for storage. Fayne went to meet her daughter in the women's sleeping quarters at the bottom of the hill, where she has been staying since she arrived. There's enough paladins around that I doubt she'd pull anything even if she did have a tendency towards abuse. I think the bigger issue is the fact that according to you guys there's a demonically powered evil overlord looking to slaughter thousands and you neglected to tell me that Eline was carrying around some item of his because you figured it was safer that way? Is that really what you're trying to say? I need to tell the High Knight of this. >"Do we? You're not the first paladin to try giving the ritual to a changeling, though you are the first to succeed. Others will not be as forgiving as Faer. They will not all simply accept that the Goddess has revoked her orders to kill the changeling. They will search for answers, and bicker when they find different ones. That last bit sounded much too much like an intimidating attempt at an order than it did friendly advice. A shame.

I'm of the opinion that Hyugore might be right as to what might happen were the truth to get out, but I still believe it's the right thing to do to accurately inform the High Knight of what we know. To me, whether or not your goddess's seeming acceptance of him is irrelevant next to the crimes he's committed, and they don't wipe the slate clean. He needs to answer for what he's done. And perhaps that might be the point at which your order is riven... Whether your organization exists to blindly serve the will of your patron Goddess, or whether you exist to follow and uphold your own view of what is right, and if you do whether it be based on the individual or the communal ideas of such. However, as with any sort of 'test of faith,' consider it a sort of Trial By Fire, and that which remains after the disagreement will be all the stronger and more valuable having gone through it. Hyogore's suggestion would have the truth be hidden every time it would be inconvenient or lead to strife, and that's not what a paladin ought stand for.

You know, that does give me an idea. You mentioned that Ath's joining the paladins does not immediately pardon his crimes, and though I think he intends to redeem himself, what you said still makes sense.
So what if we decide to wait some time before telling people about Ath, to give him time to atone for his crimes through paladinish deeds. It still won't convince some people, but it will give him a better case if he has both the favor of the goddess and his actions as a paladin as evidence.

I agree, the paladins need to be strong. Now more than ever, with the threat of this overlord looming. But times of peril like this are when we can't afford to go back on our values. At least, that soundslike sometime our order's founder, Sir De Justús, would have said.

"This isn't any secret we're keeping. This is a revelation from the goddess herself, with a very clear message."
>"Are you so certain of that?"
"Of course I am, Hygore!"

"This... This is something for the High Knight to decide. We have to be faithful in him to know what to do."
>"The High Knight's authority is in the Outlands. This impacts all of the paladins, everywhere. We, as sons of De Justús, fall under his command, but what right does the High Knight have to decide for all of us? Because they say the gods still speak to him? Because they say he is divine? Because of claims that he himself refuses to confirm or deny? He may be our superior, but what makes his judgement in this matter hold any more weight than ours?"

If there's any sort of taboo of a male being in the females' quarters, you can volunteer to take Namskul's item to deliver for him. It kills two birds with one stone, as you get to go see what's going on with Eline and her mom, and you see what Namskul's got that's so important. Most likely he's been poking around with Warpath's amulet and has been intimidated or something into like "GIVE IT BACK TO THE GIRL, FOOL."

When it comes to Hyugore... well you're both wrong. YOU shouldn't be passing the buck onto the High Knight. If you're an actual moral person and not just a slave to a mantra, then you can figure out the morality of the situation on your own and not just try to pass it on to someone else to take care of. Yes your goddess seems to have accepted Ath as a paladin, but without any further input it'd be foolish to assume that it functions as a rescission of her prior commands to exterminate changelings. Rather, these changelings now must be treated with a bit more delicacy, and offered the chance to take the oath to become a Paladin. And if they fail or choose not to, well you've got a long history of knowing how to deal with that.

Whoa whoa what whoa no that's not how that works at all

The whole idea is that the High Knight has never actually confirmed that he's divine because he shouldn't have to say if he's a descendant of De Justús or not. You're supposed to have enough faith in his choices that you never have to question it.

The Sons of De Justús have a whole division of inquisitors that make sure the people of the Outlands don't go around asking basically the exact same thing that you just said I should ask.

What Hyugore just said is dangerous enough, but I let it slide because he was caught up in the heat of things and he's a good friend. Asking the High Knight's friend if he's divine? Asking the fucking High Knight himself to his face?

This stuff with Ath is important, but I don't think I feel like getting put on trial for godsdamn heresy over it, thank you very much.

Nasty things happen if you run into those sorts without expecting it.

Well that's why we need to be informed of these things, we had no idea it was quite that touchy of an issue. Still, between us and the creepy dude I don't think there'd be a problem. We need to talk to mi anyway.

It doesn't matter really if he is divine or not isn't the point but rather how much of a stubborn, hung up on tradition and generally troublesome arse he is. The way I see it there are two possible results:

1. Upon learning Ath has been forgiven he will accept that it is possible for changlings to be forgiven and tell paladins to not slay them without cause beyond simply existing and offer the oath to them at every opportunity.

2. Question Aths forgiveness entirely, keep it a secret and possibly kill him, order knights to not offer forgiveness to changelings and to always kill them on sight.

Sure the second is a bit extreme, but simply covering it up is harmful enough. Maybe if his existence and significance were made widely known before the High Knight got a say about it?

Really the main thing you need to do is get some confirmation of whether or not this means anything for killing Changelings or not. If you ask me the safest bet is to KEEP killing Changelings but to offer them the oath beforehand. Eventually there will only be Paladin Changelings.

Are there people who are impure enough not to be paladins while not being evil enough to kill? Well, sure there's a middle ground in most cases. The average commoner doesn't have the will and dedication to the cause to perform the oath and become a Paladim, but they certainly aren't deserving of death because of it. I'm not sure if that middle ground exists for the Changelings though. The ones who don't successfully perform the oath still breed feral children, and probably also snack on babies.

I really feel like this is something the High Knight should be informed of all this. they say that he is fair in his judgement,  and that he respects the opinions of others. We can probably give him a few suggestions on what course of action to follow. Still... it may be safer if Ath were known for something before the High Knight and the others learn of his true nature, but keeping a secret for that long from the rest of the order rests... uneasy with me. Maybe it would be worth talking with Ath himself over this.

And of course we have an inquisition. The Outlands' saftey relies on us, and people will only rely on us if they have faith in our righteousness. If people go around questioning the decisions of the High Knight, it's a lot harder for people to rely on his word.

"Hyugore, this information will have to reach the High Knight eventually. Maybe not initially, though.  May we could make sure that the people respect Ath before they are informed of his nature?"
>"Whatever choice you feel is appropriate. It is your decision, but I trust you to make the right one. Oh, and you, demonologist."

>>
No. 354459 ID: cfa804

First off, I'm against holding onto the secret for even a little while. Alerting Ath ahead of time is wrong, because the actions he should be known for should be those which he freely chose to do. And what he freely chose to do was try to spawn a monster. If you tell him to go out and do good deeds to make himself a reputation, well then he's only doing them for that. So they're not really good deeds at all. He shall be judged on what he's done AND the circumstances under which he's done them. As such, it SLIGHTLY mitigates what he did with the devil, considering he 'felt' he was forced into it.

Hyugore, on the other hand, is behaving in a distinctly immoral manner. Threatening all these people like this is deplorable, and you should put him in his place. Namskul may not be a paladin and a bit creepy besides, but he's still someone who tries to work for the good of the order, and the world in general. He's a bit unsettled, sure, but his passions and ideas can be bent towards a good direction.

Now then, if you put us in contact with that amulet, that'll put us in contact with him... But I want to try something new. Try hold us in one hand, and the amulet in the other, and hold one to each side of your head... See if something happens.

No, Lin, Changelings do not eat babies.
Nor do they poison wells.
Nor do they cause blights.
Nor do they inflict rheumatism.
Nor do they do almost any of that crap people say about them.
In fact, I'd expect that there are far more changelings than feral children, and most of the time you find out about changelings is because they did have feral children.

This is because most people are basically good, regardless of whatever things their parents have done. Changelings are accused of things because they are hated, because people have a need to explain why bad things happen to good people, and because convenient scapegoats let them feel good about blaming people for things they didn't do.

Oh, also:
Poisoned wells are usually the result of nearby mining, or disease or decay. Boiling the water kills any diseases or decay it carries and makes it safe to drink in those cases.
Blights are just a disease, and are generally spread from one town to another by messengers or merchants.
Rheumatism is the result of the cartilage in joints wearing out, and generally comes with age. Willow bark tea helps treat it.
Babies are sometimes eaten by local predators, but this only means there are local predators and exceptionally bad parents.

Rather than telling the high knight about Ath, ask him if he could order that all who are to be put to the sword - even abominations - be offered a chance to seek forgiveness through the oath.
That way you would have a bunch of abomination paladins at once, and there wouldn't be questions about special exceptions or anything.
It would also establish a precedent implying the goddess is only willing to allow abominations to live if they are within the order.

Why is this a reason not to talk to Warpath? He can't harm us through the link, and if he is about to do something crazy earlier than expected it would help for us to know about it.

>Rather than telling the high knight about Ath, ask him if he could order that all who are to be put to the sword - even abominations - be offered a chance to seek forgiveness through the oath.
We probably should not specifically mention 'abominations', but I think it does sound decent to ask what his views are of people who had committed crimes who successfully take the oath.

That doesn't really help. Changelings don't have to commit a crime to be executed since they're kill-on-sight anyway. Abominations need to be specifically stated as things that need to be offered the oath or else paladins will think of those things separately.

My name? Pain. Dad's tried out a bajillion "scary" titles but... Pain works just fine.

Don't worry too much about the eye looking angry. They're almost always glaring at something, and this one's probably a bit pissed about spending a night in some creeper's pants. For all the work it took for Dad to get them into Ution, he was a lot less angry about one getting stuffed in a guy's underwear than you would think. He pulled the whole "Return my eye to its rightful owner you fool" schtick with him, but he was actually pretty confident that he could scare the guy into returning it to its Watcher. And I guess he did, from the looks of it so, whoo-hoo. Good for him.

My eye? Right now its just to look cool. It's not active just yet, but it's so Dad can keep an eye on me once we finally get to Ution... Whenever the hell that's gonna be. Better be soon though. Gods. Was it really too big a leap to assume that "get in the crystal my child, I will awaken you when the time for battle comes" meant that there would actually be, I dunno, fighting when they finally woke me up? Shit, I... You know what?

Dad's got you guys running around with... what's his face... the dopey kid, uh... Mark. Something you said about the guy's got Dad convinced that he would make the perfect for the dungeon's first test run, or something like that. Personally? I'm just not seeing it. But from the looks of it, Puffy-Hair and his ragtag crew are going to be one of the first squads to crawl the new dungeon, and I kinda want my warmup to have at least a BIT of challenge to it.

Bottom line? There's been plenty of people I've seen while watching the scouting data that I've been interested in fighting to the death. Most recent one - and the one you'd have the best chance at getting for me, is that Paladin chick with the scars, since she already knows this Mark guy. Next time the two cross paths, could you see what you could do about making sure she's on  Mark's little team for when he gets to our dungeon?

Don't mind him, we're not all that nice or bright but we're ok overall. Still he a point: a favor is a favor, and if you want us to coordinate both of them together and to the dungeon then then we need to ask a little in return. Namely how to get them there in the first place. I guess you don't need to draw us a map but general area, direction, a sign or hint or whatever.

Heh. You'll know how to get to the dungeon when it's time to get to the Dungeon. Just make sure she's there when that time arrives, alright?

As for what I do have to offer you? Dad's got this whole act of his, but I just want a good damn fight when this all finally gets off the ground. If you can do a few things for me, than I can tell you a few things about my dad that he certainly wouldn't.

For example - the latest misfit he's got you dragging around, Tinata? He probably roped her into this game with some bullshit like "During my observation of the situation at the Kobold Camp, I noticed that the girl heading the attack possessed incredible ingenuity and tactical skill. I want her to accompany Mark, as I believe she will make a worthy foe."

How close am I? Be honest. Because the fact of the matter is that trying to figure out if the Kobolds would make good units in our army came second. Dad was keeping an eye on the girl in the wolfskin long before the Kobold camp mess started.

Help me with a few things, and I'd be more than happy to let you in one a few things in return. How's that sound?

As for the Warboss gig? Yeah, if Dad's whole thing here fell apart, I could still see myself doing this. With a lot less tattered capes, organs, and melodrama, though.

Wait didn't we say that first? In our private discussions, I mean. And then after, when we next spoke to Warpath, he said the same thing independent of us?

Anyway how big a challenge do you want? The dungeon is a pretty big multiplier in your favor if it's built right, and since it was Warpath's idea I'm going to go ahead and bet that he made sure it is right. Mark, Lin, and Titania would be the core fighting group there. Faer'll follow Lin anywhere, so that covers the heavies and the healers, but for your standard six man team they're going to need a dedicated thief and a specialist in a field useful in the dungeon (usually magic but there's no telling what research and circumstance will dictate as the best choice for the sixth slot). Mark's sister could serve as a thief, except she doesn't play well with others.

If you want it harder we'll expand the roster or pick better quality specialists I suppose.

I don't need the paladin doing any dirty work, I just need her there when the dungeon opens. Beyond that, I really don't care what you do with her.

I mean, I don't get to help build the dungeon, and I don't get to help plan the attack, so I think at the very least I should have some degree of say in like, who ai fight in the fight I was basically born for, you know? Really, there's a LOT of people I've seen looking at this Ution place that look like they'd make one hell of a fight, but this paladin lady is close enough to your guy already that we can probably work her into things without screwing with whatever master plan Dad's got cooked up. If I see anyone else who catches my eye, I'll try pointing them out, but My Dad's probably also got some guys in mind so like, if getting my guys and his guys starts to be a problem then, like, whatever, you know? This is absolutely unacceptable. The necklace is a device by which a warlord intent on invading Ution uses to scout out the area for potential threats, allies, and other things. Eline MAY have been helping him unwittingly but to give it back would be incredibly foolhardy. If you falter under the pressure and give it back, so help me Lin...

No. 357376 ID: cfa804

Sorry toots, I can't be present in the orb all the time, so I can't always be here to make sure everyone else is giving you the full story with nothing left out.

Anyway, where to begin? So you'll want to consult Faer about this, because there's a LOT of history (and religion) involved in this. You know what Imps are, right? They were these tiny little creatures that the gods used for this or that. Well at one point a large group were transformed en masse into what are now called Hobgoblins, though this is a LONG time ago and for the most part they've all died out by now. Except some, one of whom now goes by the name Warpath. He's an ancient being that's been around before the Fall of the Giants, and he even had a hand to play in their fall. Since then he's taken up residence in Orc country, desiring nothing more than combat and challenge, but orcs being less than clever, eventually he's run out of sport and the orcs eventually just learned to keep away from where his keep is, thus he fell into legend. Legend even YOU have heard some of. However, due to the new exploration of Ution (and other things we're not fully aware of), Warpath's interest has been rekindled, and he once again seeks to have the best champions the world can offer face him. In order to do this, he seeks to invade Ution, killing thousands in the initial assault, pretty much just to show what a threat he is. He then aims to set up his own dungeon lair and believes that there will be a few wars which he will win, but eventually there will come a time when, rather than large military battles and campaigns, both sides fall into a sort of stalemate, and THAT is when he hopes individual 'adventuring parties' made up of talented individuals such as yourself will try to make their way through his dungeon undetected to challenge him. THAT'S what he wants. He wants to have these specific challengers that are competent enough to infiltrate his lair (where full-scale attacks by armies have failed) and fight him, where he seeks to live or die. But for the common peasant or soldier? He's willing to throw away thousands of their lives in the invasion and wars just to achieve that challenge for himself. To him, that's okay, because it builds up a reputation for himself and attracts the sort of hero like Samon the Barbarian that he wants to come to face him. And he'd rather have them come to HIM than take the effort to search them out and challenge them himself. He has no delusions that his goal is just or anything other than completely amoral, but perhaps if granted another chance we might dissuade him from his intended path... But we can't count on that, and besides it might be too late. From what we've learned just now, he's somehow 'placed' his half-orc daughter into some kind of scrying stone he uses to communicate with his Watchers. The Watchers are those individuals in Ution that he has given those Eye Amulets to, which allow him to gauge the defenses and potential enemies withing Ution from afar. In return, he 'advises' his Watchers for their service. I would recommend interrogating/questioning (as thoroughly as you deem necessary) about how she came into possession of her amulet and the nature of her relation to Warpath. She seems quite 'stricken' that she's separated from him now. She may be the daughter of a very influential guild mage, but she herself is nothing but a rogue mage who has been aiding fugitives and criminals in the outlands. Anyway, his half-orc daughter, Pain, is coordinating various forces using the system of Watchers while Warpath himself is in a meeting with his generals, whoever they are. The brief glimpse of information we initially received when coming into contact with Pain revealed that she was currently working with another Watcher who wears a Plague Doctor mask and who in all likelihood is leader of a mercenary group (due to Mark's prior encounter with him at the kobold ambush of the goblins), and she's tasked him with keeping the High Knight unaware of the movements and intentions of Warpath's invasion. This is technically a plot against him, because as Paladins and defenders of the good, any plot to pull the wool over your eyes and keep you blinded from the oncoming invasion that will see the deaths of thousands is indeed something that goes against everything your order and the High Knight do/should stand for. Thus it is in your best interest, and the best interest of the world, that you bring all this information to the High Knight as soon as possible, as the success of their invasion may depend on the inaction of your order, or the alarm not being raised ahead of time.

Of less importance is the silly whims of Warpath and Pain. As said, they both are in it for the sort of battle-lust that can only be achieved by primitives, and so having no concern over the numerous lives cost by the upcoming wars, they are more interested in finding potential challengers. Warpath himself has professed interest in Mark and the girl Tinata, while Pain has expressed her desire to face you in combat. This is not at all pertinent or important, but you said you desired to know everything we did. You may not be pleased with being specifically 'tied up in all of it' but don't be so selfish as to place yourself higher than anyone else being threatened by this external menace.

Lin, do you remember what Hyugore said a little while ago about bending your duty being acceptable when it prevents terrible consequences?
Lets say that, hypothetically, a demonic army where the undead alone have many times the the total number of surviving orcs and are far from the most common minion attacks Ution.
You, being a paladin, would be duty bound to march out to meet them even if you knew dead certain that every paladin alive would be like an anthill under the wheels of such a war machine. Correct?

Now, suppose you found out about this hypothetical plot a few years earlier - after the demonic army has swelled to its full ranks, but before the invasion proper starts. You would, naturally, be compelled to take the fight to the enemy on his home terrain.
These actions are well intentioned, but futile and stupid.

I use 'you' in this case not in reference to you personally, but as shorthand for 'the typical paladin' or more properly 'roundabout half of all paladins'.

Now, suppose you had somebody who wants the best possible chance of stopping this army, and a paladin finds out this person knows about some sort of evil plot. If the person tells the paladin everything then the paladin will need to choose between lying about it to other paladins in order to conspire with this person to play their own order like puppets to coax them into something that would stand a chance, or telling the other paladins and thus dooming every man, woman, and child in Ution to terrible death at the hands of a being which has contracted with a incalculably powerful demon - you know, the kind that can steal the souls of anybody killed by their contractee?

So, if you were in that Paladin's shoes would you rather betray your order for the greater good or doom an entire continent to hell?
Hypothetically, of course.

Also, hypothetically, Ath was allowed to become a paladin because your goddess realizes that her personal distaste for abominations like shapeshifters is very insignificant compared to just how proper fucked you are and how you need all the help you can possibly get and may even be pushed so far as to allow half-demons to become paladins. Hypothetically.

Now, with all these completely hypothetical and in no was real things in mind that are completely unrelated to the not at all prophetic dream you had in mind, would you rather we tell you everything that's going on right now, or talk to the high knight so that he can hypothetically make the sorts of difficult decisions and tough choices about the fate of the world which his position suggests is his duty and responsibility alone?

[Squelch any attempt to give her any new information until she's had a chance to think this over]

FanTASTic!

Lin is not comfortable lying about things, and I'm damn sure she's not capable of standing back and letting an army slaughter a kingdom so she can get a better shot at taking out the warchief. She is not capable of making the kinds of decisions that she would need to make if she knew.

I am not trying to inform her of what is going on, I am trying to get her to do her job by leaving it up to her boss.

I'm trying to get her to understand that she's better off leaving major decisions to the High Knight instead of trying to do his job for him, that we aren't aren't telling her things because it puts her in a terrible position, and and that she should trust the High Knight to do the right thing for the same sort of reason as to why she shouldn't ask if he has the if he has a Goddess for a granny.

Remember: It's not her place to decide on anything, and if she tries then the most she could do would be causing a schism. Knowing about something terrible that will happen and being unable to do anything about it is torture in a very real and literal way.

I won't stop people from telling the High Knight anything if they want, but I'm not going to let you do something that terrible to Lin.

I get where you're coming from, I really do. If what's going on is as bad as you're making it sound, then the decision on what to do about it best lies in the hands of someone like the High Knight.

But this isn't about making any calls. This isn't about deciding what we do next. This is about the fact that my duty as a Paladin requires that I'm able to protect the innocent from danger, and no matter what call is made, I need to know what lies ahead.

It's the High Knight's place to determine how we deal with this, but for me to knowingly turn down a chance to learn all there is to be learned - to deny myself the opportunity to be fully and completely prepared for whatever threat this land will face, it would mean betrayingnmy duty as a protector.

So if this eye is worrying you, then I'll just set it aside. And then you'll tell me...

Lin, I wanted us to tell all that to the High Knight so that he could decide what you should know. That would have let you know everything you needed to know without having to understand the full scope of the problem.

Also, we are going to talk to the High Knight about cutting deals with the dwarves. We can rapidly advance their armaments and munitions to the point where this invasion goes from the possible end of life as you know it to being an annoying task that would irritate you for a long weekend.

Maybe a slight exaggeration there; we probably don't have quite that much time to research, develop, and manufacture.
Also, that would require first purging Ution of those eye amulets before we start so we don't have to face those same weapons.

Right now? Catch up with Eline and take her aside. We need to find out where she got that spy eye, and who else she knows of that has one.

As Lin approaches the main gate of the camp, Faer notices her bloodied hands and walks over.

"Don't worry about it."

Faer casts a light healing spell, mending Lin's wounds

Before Lin can respond, she notices a large crows gathering around her and turns to face the gate. Three figures stand at the camp's entrance, an entire squadron of armored knights standing behind them.

By the gods... the man to the left is Commander Landyas, the head of the Sons' top squadron "Holy Spear." The man on the right is Grand Inquisitor Andrés. And the man in the cloak must be....

Tur and Furor are just ordinary people who are running from their pasts. Eline is a scared little girl who, terrified of the prospect of life as a guild mage, is willing to use desperate measures to avoid that. Mary is an opportunist and a bully who took advantage of this three's desperation for her own profit. She's probably the one responsible for most of their crimes, though as far as I know she hasn't actually committed anything serious herself.

Tur has a complete disregard for the lives of others, and Furor has been rather eager to experiment on children.

Mary, however was barely worth capturing. While she is hardly innocent, I am quite certain that Tur and Furor would have caused far more harm if Mary hadn't assumed command of them.
The evidence also suggests that Mary took a protective role over Eline; that Tur and Furor kept their experimentation on Eline secret from Mary lends credence to the idea.

Eline herself poses concerns which must be addressed on a more private setting as soon as possible, but debatably she has done nothing requiring judgement."

While Mary is still a thief and a bully, I believe that she tried to keep the two in line once The Pack was formed, as their crimes after its formation are mostly limited to petty robberies, sir. He's correct insofar as I don't trust Furor being quiet throughout this. However, when it comes to Mary, losing both her hands is tantamount to a death sentence, as she'd be unable to support herself and need someone else to serve her. I recommend losing one hand (assuming such a thing is not easily reversed with magic) so that she is hugely inconvenienced to the point of disability, as well as being a large mark of shame. Then again, there's more than one reason someone might have lost a hand, so I also recommend branding the word THIEF on her forehead.

Goblins are renouned for being savage dicks. They don't fit in with society because they're vicious little assholes.

How is going by their justice system a good idea?

They also have serious crime problems, not only because of that but also because it's hard to get legitimate work if you've been marked as a thief, which is the primary reason for lopping off bodyparts in the first place.
Honestly, would you hire somebody who was missing fingers for thievery? Completely aside from the uneasiness that people feel around deformities and amputations and the like?
You chop of fingers and she'll be a thief because you took away her ability to be anything else, and then her crimes will be on your head.

Furor seems smug, but he's been given a potion that hampers his magical abilities. He doesn't concern me too much right now. You know... had I come up here before being told that an ageless overlord was about to attack the continent, I would probably be all for taking a few of Mary's fingers. It's harsh, yeah, but I've TOLD Mary that she'll have to accept what comes to her when we finally caught her. I've let her off easy in the past, hoping she would realize how dangerous the game she was playing was, but she and I both knew that I would get tired of it eventually.

The Pack was unlucky enough to catch me on a very bad day back in that forest. After what had happened with Ath, I wasn't in the mood to play around with the Pack. But I warned Mary it would happen eventually. She should have seen it coming. And yet...

Tur and Furor? They can hang, for all I care. But  Mary's just young and stupid. I traveled with her enough back in Mark's old group before we kicked her out to know that. And maybe losing a few fingers would teacher her a lesson, but with what I've learned over the last hour? It hurts me to say it. It really does. You guys have no idea how much I don't want to admit it, but I think we may need Mary's help down the line. With all her fingers attached.

"Sir High Knight, milord, sir! Mary is a thief, yes, but I see no reason to judge her as goblins would. She's misguided, but I believe in her case there are much easer ways to fix that than branding her as a thief. Surely we can find work for her that she could redeem herself through - work that can be better accomplished with all digits intact."
The High Knight pauses. Mary seems surprised by the proposition.
>"Indeed... While Mary is the leader of The Pack, she's hardly its worst member. While I would usually argue that a thief such as her deserves to be marked as such... Perhaps she's earned some leniency for keeping her goons in line... Yes! She can pay off her debts to society working in service to our order for the next year.  Should she fail to change her ways during that time, we can brand her as the thief she is. It occurs to me that in this situation blackmail is the best explanation we can hope for. The other options I can think of involve the guild wanting Furor's experimental results or having a habit of employing thugs or assassins.
And here I was hoping his plan was something that could be solved with a quick punch to the face and maybe a dive for cover...

Still, there is hardly anything you can do about it now. Contesting his judgement now has quite high risks (harming our chances of dealing with the warlord and with Ath's situation) and quite low rewards (chances of successfully causing justice).

I've already got a few responses planned for his most likely counters, and both the average and typical outcome from example scenarios place the risk below the reward.

Also, we don't need to beat the High Knight at his own game, we simply need to beat DC ad the High Knight's game.

Ok, THIS I can recognize.
See that pose? It's bardic magic.
"Did you just imply that Justice is entertainment? It is our duty, and a solemn one. Judging people is a terrible thing that must be done; it is a burden we bear to spare others, not a pleasure to indulge in.

You say that a life in the guild's tower is as certain as death, but one of the crimes for which they stand accused is performing vile experiments on a person who escaped the tower.
Further, the conditions of their servitude are an unknown. We put criminals to death not out of malice or a desire to see them suffer, but simply to end their threat. If the conditions are too poor then we would be inflicting needless suffering upon them, while if they are too good then it is as if they are being rewarded for their actions.
I do not need to doubt her honesty, or even yours, to mistrust your words. It's natural for friendship to distort your perception, and it's unreasonable to expect somebody to be able to ignore their friendship when making decisions.
Even if your judgement is unclouded, there is no certainty she hasn't changed since you adventured together.
Even if she hasn't, it is completely reasonable to expect what these two men did to her child to push her to acts outside her nature.

Then there's the danger of sanctioned slavery. Sentencing somebody to time in servitude is done so that they may work towards redemption, to bring them out of the criminal mindset, to give them a chance at a different way of living, and to guide those who are lost without direction.
Sentencing somebody to a life of servitude is different. The intent is not to fix their problems so they can go on to live better lives, as they have no life to go on to. There is no intent to guide them, but to make use of them. It's not to let them work towards redemption, as sentences of life and death are given because a person is expected to be well beyond redemption.
If their service is without end it ceases to be rehabilitation and becomes sanctioned slavery."

Also? The inquisition can take its annoyance and cram it up its ass. You are performing your duty to the best of your ability.
It's heretical to ask if the High Knight is divine, but your understanding of why is flawed. Yes, it's partly so his decisions will carry the same weight either way, but it's also because people would treat a man of divine heritage as infallible.
Right now he is not your superior.
Right now he is not a descendant of your goddess.

You are doing the right thing by arguing with him. If the inquisition doesn't like it they can ask the goddess to strip you of your paladinhood and lament when she ignores them.

>And we have also made a similar arrangement ourselves with Ath, with him agreeing to devote his life to the paladins as a repayment for his crimes.

Incorrect! Becoming a paladin comes with a pardon from the goddess herself. I expect the goddess only grants mercy to people who she thinks will stick with it, but Ath could walk away now and his crimes would still be absolved.
He won't, of course, but he could.

>Being hypocritical wouldn't help anything.
You give out sentences of life and death because a person is irredeemable.
Criminals can't be sentenced to becoming a paladin, they are given an actual sentence and have the option to ask the goddess for mercy. If she grants it then she thinks they are not irredeemable.

There is no hypocrisy here.

They are not allowed to punish her for being too devoted to her duty and her goddess, and the High Knight has said outright that her concerns are valid.

Beyond that? I strongly doubt the inquisition would kill her for seeing to it that their codes are followed, at the very least because treating the High Knight as being above the code would be certain to cause a schism.

You don't seem to get how your average inquisition works.
The primary purpose of an Inquisition is not to stop people from questioning the scripture. Its primary purpose to stop people from questioning the Church.
Inquisitions have a word for logical and theologically sound arguments that disagree with the Church: heresy.
In fact, inquisitors fear such dissenting arguments more than they fear outfight apostasy, because in their (not entirely unfounded) view such arguments lead to schisms.

I don't really care what the other voices are saying at this point. But I'm not going to tell you what to say, Lin. Instead I'll ask why you decided to become a Paladin. There seems to have been some pressure put on you due to your family, but as far as I know, you didn't sign up to be one of the High Knight's groupies, did you? Did you wish to pursue justice, or did you simply wish to simper and agree with those higher up than you in the organizational hierarchy. If you trust this guy then that's your business, but as far as I know, you don't even KNOW this guy so him asking you to trust in his judgement is unfounded. I BELIEVE that Paladins are supposed to rely on their sense of right and wrong, morality, and justice, and if he can convince you that his decision is correct that's fine, but you're a Paladin and not simply a tool. However i have to admit, the expectation that you should just do what your superiors tell you to do leaves me rather feeling disgusted at your order, because it discourages self-reliance and freedom of thought, as well as expanding your own perspectives. When it comes to bureaucracy like this, you can bow your head and merely be a pet of your superiors, and maybe you'll be tossed a bone every once in a while like a favored pet ought be... and maybe that's the position and life you aspire to. But if not... I believe you need to re-evaluate why you're here.

Paladins are sworn to uphold peace, justice, and the law, but out here in the Outlands the Paladins are the only semblance of law there is. Since neither Egias o Farway's laws apply here, someone has to decide what constitutes "lawful." The High Knight is the guy that sets the laws we enforce out here - he's the one who decides what territory is designated for settlements and what territory belongs to the goblin tribes. He's the one who decides which mercenary companies get sanctions. It's vital that somebody keep order around here, and the High Knight is the only man suited for it.

If everyone were to try making their own rules, things would fall apart. The Inquisition's job is to ensure that the people in the Outlands don't question the authority of the High Knight. Their job is stopping the spread of heretical ideas that could lead to people questioning whether or not the High Knight is the "right" person to be setting the laws around here. Anything they believe may risk undermining the authority of the High Knight is fair game. Some people have their issues with them, but they a necessary part of keeping chaos from speeding through the Outlands.

With that being said, I still don't want to push them. Having them think I don't trust the High Knight's authority could have... Some pretty bad consequences, so I have to be careful.

>Instead I'll ask why you decided to become a Paladin. There seems to have been some pressure put on you due to your family, but as far as I know, you didn't sign up to be one of the High Knight's groupies, did you?
My family... why I joined the Paladins doesn't matter. What matters is that as a paladin, I'm sworn to uphold justice. The goddess saw me fit to represent her as a paragon for the forces of good. The goddess trusts me to be able to see to it that justice be served. That's my burden and my responsibility, and having dealt with Tur and Furor, I need to know the full reasoning behind the High Knight's decision before I agree that his decision is just.

I have a great amount of respect for the High Knight, and what he does for the people here. I have no doubt that whatever he's doing he believes is for the best, but... I certainly didn't join to be anyone's "groupie."

I just, I know the High Knight knows what he's doing. He wouldn't be the High Knight if he didn't. I just... Something doesn't feel right, and I need to understand why he's made his decision before I can cast judgement. And I don't know how the hell I can ask the High Knight that without sounding heretical. The things that you hear happening to people who go against his decrees at the hands of the Inquisition, I just don't know how I can avoid coming off as...

Wait.

The Inquisition's job is to persecute those who would cause people to doubt his authority to issue decrees for the Outlands - who question his ability to perform the job he was chosen for.

But this isn't him issuing a decree. This is him making a judgement, and the rules of those are outlined a lot more clearly than the rules of the Outlands. The High Knight's authority is over our laws, not our code.

And that puts me on the same level of authority as...

Tur's a brute, small as he may be, and Furor, while obviously nowhere near as talented as the guys and girls of the Guild is more capable than your average Mage. The Guild wants to use them for retrieving spell components from the places that most people dare not tread - you know, babe; Ogre dens, ancient, abandoned, underground temples, the kinds of places where one wrong step drops the roof on your head."

Dungeon delving is dangerous, yes, but it is also a great training experience and a way to get some good stuff. Not only that, but he may not trust the mages either and if they 'escape', then there is nothing he can do.

The law is upheld, but they can get their freedom if they work hard. Any consequence would be on the mages hands, not his or the pack(they asked for the criminals and they couldn't contain them? Who's fault is that?). Very Xanatos. I like it.

"Milord, can the Guild ensure that Tur and Furor don't find a means to escape their sentence?"
The High Knight laughs.
>"This is the Guild we're talking about. Furor's good, but he sure isn't Guild good, ya' dig? I'm sure they've got their ways to keep the two in line. So, does this all sound good to you?"

>Clause
I'm not too sure if I want to be giving Tur and Futor an out for their punishment. Still, it's worth bringing up.

"Yes, milord, as long as the two are given an option between service to the Guild and death. It seems unlikely, but what if the two display a change in their ways over the course of serving their sentence?"
>"That would be up to the Guild... but I suppose it is something we could discuss with Lady Gwethana at a later time. And you, Lynne? Does this sound just to you?"
>"As long as the Guild sees to it that Tur and Furor are punished severely for trying to subvert their sentence."

The High Knght turns to the crowd

Amidst the cheering, a paladin pushes his way to the front of the crowd...

>"Mister High Knight! Mister High Knight!!"

>"Yeah! My name is Ath, and I'm new to your order. You're the guy who writes the rules around here?"

I speak before the High Knight gets a chance to say anything.

"Ath, we've already been over this. Yes, you made a deal with a Devil, but you've repented and you've been forgiven. If you have any other questions for the High Knight, I'm surer you can discuss them later. In private."
>"...Fine. Sorry, sir. Carry on."

I'm all for explaining the station with Ath to the High Knight later, but even though inquisition probably couldn't have done much, avoiding the chaos Ath revealing himself would have caused was for the best.

The last stages of a judgement ritual can take a while. The three of us have a basic idea of the punishments, but now we have to work out the fine details. Particularly with Mary - the length of her sentence, how long she'll be working each day, the nature of her work... It's not as exciting as the beginning of the ritual when everyone involved might have a different idea on what to do, but it's still vital to ensuring that the criminals are issued the fairest punishment possible. Things will probably be a lot smoother from this point on.

Oh, and thanks. Things got a bit tense, and you guys really helped me out. Even if nobody can figure out what you guys are, you're certainly worth keeping around.

The negatives... well, I don't know if it was my shot that set off that Dwarven powder keg, but the train that was supposed to take us through Egias has... uh, well, derailed. Violently.

I'm also not sure the exact number of people on the train - I'd say about forty... ish... But only nine of us actually ended up walking away from it. To be completely fair, I don't think many of the casualties were actually from the crash, since the assassins were killing passengers left and right before the train blew up.

The positives are that, uh... well, I managed to stop the assassins that attacked the Prince. As his bodyguard, that is my main objective, so uh, so that's good. And we're only a few hours away from the capital of Egias, so uh, I'm sure we can get an escort of some sort once we arrive.

I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Tinata hasn't said much since the train crashed. She hasn't been particularly talkative since we left the town, actually. I tried asking her a few questions about her dad and the kobolds, but she said that she wanted to wait until we got to the capital before we started with any of that. I figured I'd give her time to think to herself about things - I think this is the first time she's been far from her town in a while, and it's probably the first time she's been out of the Outlands at all.

But right now, I don't know. I get the feeling that she wants to say something, but I'm not sure if uh, if now's the best time to be asking her what's on her mind.

You see... the Elves who attacked us on the train, uh, we think they might have been "Elf's Ear, Human's Hand" guys. I'm not sure if my run-in with Nessya and Vinbal has any connection, but Tinata says she saw their emblem on one of the Elves' knives, and it's not too hard to put two and two together on that one. I think it's bothering her, but I think I should just give her space for now. Unless uh, unless you think I should ask her about.

>"Assassins! Gods-damned assassins! Good friend, can you BELIEVE this? Bandits and wildlife are one thing, but it's been a year and there's still people out for my head? How did they even know we would be on that train?"

The prince is fine, though. And uh, and so is my shoulder, mostly! So that's good news.

You didn't think to search the bodies of the assassins you just killed? And you call yourself an adventurer!? It isn't as if the train was in flames or anyone was chasing you.

About these assassins, unless you had some sort of extraordinary stroke of luck, they would seem to be surprisingly incompetent at their business in general and their supposed guild in particular. Was there something preventing them from just walking up to you disguised as passengers and quietly sticking a dagger in you before you noticed them?
Competent assassins don't rely on loud and inaccurate weapons, and don't start loud fights near their targets. They actually use stealth until they have attacked their target, and afterwards as well if they can manage it.
Drawing attention to yourself before you strike is for thugs, and/or knights.

That's actually what's bothering me. We did check the bodies of the assassins. We checked the wreckage for a good thirty minutes for valuables. I even found some more ammunition for the pistol I picked off of the first elf that tried to kill Samwell, but we couldn't find any emblems on the assassins. Tinata swears she saw one with the emble on their weapon, though.

...It's not like they just opened fire, either. While we were eating, Tinata jumped up from the table and grabbed a guy who was passing by. Before I could figure out what was going on, she was shouting and trying to wrestle a knife out of his hand, and Elves started shooting at us.

I... I uh, I'm just not sure if now's the right time to be asking her about whaso exactly happened, so I haven't said anything yet.

Wait, that's right, ALL OF THE USES.

The knives fading on death would make sense from a strategic standpoint, but Tinata's father is confirmed by Bow Guy to be dead, and his dagger still has its mark.

Another explanation for the unmarked weapons is that the other assassins were not members of the Ear/Hand guild. That would happen either through the other assassins being hirelings to the guild, or through the other assassins being unrelated to the ear/hand member.

Hmm... magic is certainly a possibility. According to Faer these guys are some ancient guild, and any guild with enough power to last as long as that has to have had a few mages in their ranks... though the thought of assassins having access to any really powerful magics is a bit frightening. Magic's always made me a bit uh, a bit uneasy.

I'd still like to talk to Tinata about what she saw at some point, but I guess uh, that we're better off waiting? At least a bit. I think we're safest just kinda uh, kinda letting her take her time adjusting to all of this. And we got plentyof time. Still a good few hours before we reach the capital, after all! So uh, so it's not all bad.

Because he seems a tad angry about his friend.

But does the OTHER guy know that?

Anyway, this is just ridiculous, it's not like you want their respect or anything like that. On the bright side, it's almost impossible for him to charge at you through this deep water. If you can get out onto the shore before him, however, you'll have the advantage in both mobility and height. Or if any of your companions can. Perhaps provide some fire support or just flanking positions

Mark swings downwards at the Orc's head, but the Orc blocks the blow with his arm. Red blood trickled from the wound as Mark's blade sinks into the Orc's arm and becomes imbedded in its thick skin.

Grinning and seemingly unphased by the injury, the Orc yanks his arm back in an attempt to pull Mark back into the water. Mark struggles to maintain his footing and his grip on his blade.

Whew. Almost thought the big grey brute was gonna get the upper hand on me there for a second.

So do you think that we could maybe uh, maybe like, retroactively add the fight with the Orcs to my grade for the train? That would bring it up to a solid B, I think. Right?

Hey wait a second what's that guy doing with my money?

"Uh, excuse me! You can't just loot the Orc I killed, that's my money!"
>"You'll get your money. I need you to answer a quick question for me first though."
"A question?"
>"Peasants don't drop Orcs like that. I'm guessing that you two are adventuring types, yeah?"
"Oh! Uh, yeah... Why?"
>"Now before it ended up in a lake, that train was heading for Capital City. I can't think of many reasons for a dungeon crawler to be this far out of the Outlands unless there was a lot of money to be earned, an important job to be done, or someone important needed a bit of protection."
"...Uh, well..."
>"And if I recall correctly, the guy in the suit mentioned something just before these Orcs showed up that made it sound an awful lot like he thought the Elves back on that train were gunning for him. Now, not to be blunt, but last time I hiked into Capital City with strangers, I ended up getting arrested and nearly lost my head over suspicions of aiding the Gryphon's Skull conspirators."

Look, if it makes you feel any better, if orks are as tough as they say, the green one MIGHT not be dead yet. You could just flip him face up and let the gods sort it out, or you could jam sharp things into him until you are sure he's dead. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Anyway, I'm not sure I understand why telling them this is the prince would be upsetting. It might be a SECURITY RISK, sure, but the common traveler wouldn't have any more animosity toward him than you do, right? He got sent on a suicide mission to prove he was good for something besides starting bar-fights, and now he is on his way back.

But if you do want to deflect attention, you could point out that assassins are generally the territory of shadowy conspiracies, right? If the guy in the poofy shirt were on the wrong side of the law they would be sending paladins after him. Paladins who don't kill random passengers who look at them the wrong way. Remember that part?

>"Heh, now I've got you guys all confused. Sorry about that."
The Bard reaches into his jacket and removes a letter bearing the seal of Egias.
>"Usually I travel the Oulands with my buddy Dov here, performing at taverns and inns for gold. At the last show, a member of the Egian Royal Guard showed up and handed me a letter basically summoning me to perform at the King's Palace in Capital City. There was a poem attached that I had to recite in order to get in. It said any officials who gave me trouble on the way into the city wouldn't ask questions as long as I had the poem, since it's some top-secret level political passphrase or something like hat. Figured the Prince of Farway would recognize it."
The Prince appears shocked
>"Well, yes, but - Why in the name of the Gods is Egias handing out official codes to traveling performers?"
>"Hell if I know. I'm not even that well known, so it's got me confused too. One hell of an opportunity to pass up, playing at the palace an all. When those Elves started opening fire on the train, I figured that I'd gotten myself caught up in a bunch of conspiracy shit or something. Good to know it was just a good old political assassination attempt on part of Farway's beloved aristocracy."
>"And just what is that supposed to mean!?"
>"Nothing, your highness. I'm Cadence, by the way. Like I said before, this is Dov. I guess we'll be tagging along with you to the Palace once we hit the capital."
The dwarf in goggles appears concerned.
>"...Are you sure it's a good idea to "tag along" with these fellows? We've just established that the prince has a tendency to attract men who blow up trains."

They seem like nice enough guys, but something about the Bard's story strikes me as really weird... You don't think the assassins back on the train were gunning for these guys, do you? Do you think there's anything I should ask them, or is it best for now to just shake hands and keep wading to Capital City?

I have no objections to that.

"Pleased to meet you, Cadence."

As I shake the Bard's hand, I notice that from here you van just barely make out the clock tower of Capital City poking out from behind the mountains in the distance, and breathe a sigh of relief.

It's been a long couple of days. Since I picked up you guys and helped Samwell fight off that bearhound back in the Outlands we've dealt with kobolds, mercenaries, goblins, assassins, knife wounds, train wrecks, and Orcs.

And now we're almost there. Another night of walking, and we're finally there. In the grand scheme of things, it's hardly the first steps. Warpath is still plotting, the Prince still needs to receive his quest from the King, Tinata's found herself in the dark about her father, and the men who her father worked with either want the Prince or this bard dead really badly.

We've done so much just to get here, and yet there's still so much to do.

The trial of the Pack stirred up a good deal of buzz around the Outlands; not necessarily because the pack was a well-known group, but because of the decision made by the High Knight to take part in their judgement. While the "festivities" that the High Knight had planned for later in the night would prove to be a much greater source of gossip, rumors the judgement that preceded them still managed to circulate quickly.

It's said that a scar-faced paladin challenged the High Knight's decision to let all three criminals walk, refusing to back down until he had thoroughly explained his plan to sentence the murderous Dwarf and Elf in The Pack to a life of dungeon crawling as a substitution for hanging - some were quick to claim that it was part of a publicity stunt to appease the Guild of Mages, the Sons of De Justús' biggest political connection.

As for the paladin who went head-to-head with the Sons' leader during the judgement herself, whose actions were praised in private by the Sons of De Justús' bigger detractors, many speculated that the inquisition would likely be keeping a close eye on her - though she had broken no rules of vows, suspicion that one doubts the judgement of the High Knight is all it takes to draw suspicion of heresy.

Little attention was given to the paladin who attempted to interrupt the ritual with some sort of announcement, but was quickly shut down. It was generally agreed by those who did hear of the incident that he likely didn't have anything too important to add.

While anything the High Knight does is bound to bet attention in the Outlands, especially a judgement, the attention the trial was given would ultimately pale in comparison to what happened after the trial, when the High Knight called for a private meeting...

Meanwhile, in Egias, news quickly circulated about a train violently derailed by a series of explosions onboard only a few miles south of Capital City.

Originally, the derailment of the train was regarded as accidental, attributed to the improper handling of the kegs of Dwarven Black Powder onboard. Though the initial group of guards sent to investigate the crash found no survivors, the survivors of the crash would show up in Capital City a day later, and a new story began to spread...

I really like the chapter epilogues in this quest. They give both the setting and the protagonists' actions a feeling of substance and realness.
