Discussion thread: http://quest.lv/kusaba/questdis/res/347404.html

Wizards in Meigara are powerful individuals, able to bend the laws of space and time at their will. In past ages, they became a threat to reality itself, almost destroying the world in their struggle for power, fighting among themselves, using Meigara and its people as their personal battlefield

After a rather truculent battle in which almost a continent was erased from existence and half of the wizards population died, they decided that they had to control the number and the power of the existing wizards if they wanted to stay alive.

Thus, the Magic Guild was born, the living wizards swore to work only for clients allowed by the guild, and never seeking their own goals. To become a wizard, one would have to pass a deadly test that only the most courageous and wise ones would pass.

Stanley Pherguson, born in Cornovia, son of the town’s crier, decided that his life was too boring, and pursued the golden dream that magic promises. And now he’s inside a deep chasm, trying to prove that he’s worthy of receiving that power. He’ll have to descend into the abyss and bring back a valuable artifact from the demonic temple down there, to prove that he has what it’s needed to have to become a wizard.

But for now he’s just going to plop into one of the deepest chambers with a lot of bruises and 2nd degree burns over his body.

Uuhghh... ye gods, I thought I was done for... That last fireslug was just too much.

Sword is cursed. Chest is a mimic. Bones are a skeleton. Rocks are all Lurkers Below. Chasm leads to Gehenna.

Hey, that’s rude.

>Spells

Yeah, that’s a funny one. I know nothing ‘bout magic, not a single spell. They don’ teach you no magic until you pass the stupid trial, that you’re unlikely to survive, without knowin’ magic!

>The staff.
It just glows, does nothin’ else. Which is pretty great, otherwise I’d fallen down some hole straight to hell by now.

So after all the crap I’ve gone through to get here I have like... four scrolls left. Anybody can use scrolls, even a commoner like me. But each scroll can only be used once. I have a scroll of... Wall of Fire, Sleep, Minor Healing and Detect Traps.

I think I’m almost at the temple, but I better save these scrolls unless I really need them. I even lost my dagger, that damn fireslug melted it like butter.

That’s still rude... I think.

Stan knocks the chest over and hits it a couple of times with his sword. Before he can swing it for a third time the lid suddenly burst opens and a large tentacle-shaped form emerges from it, practically as tall as the human, with a huge eye on its end, looking at Stan with an endless stare. Then a deep, yet polite voice comes from it (even when the creature doesn’t seem to have any visible mouths).

“Oh, I knew I heard somebody knocking on the door! How can I help you, young fellow?”

The creature doesn’t seem to pay any attention to Stan’s sword while he still wields it defensively between his own body and the creature.

“Oh, heavens no! I just recently ate an adventurer, and I have to watch my calorie intake! Specially with you wizard types, all that fat and no muscle. No offense intended!”

”Uh... alright. Why do you live in a chest anyways?”

“What a silly question! Do random bystanders knock on your door and inquire why do you live in your own house often? Maybe that’s a thing in the surface, but down here we still have manners.”

Ok, ok, sorry... So any idea about that Temple?

“Oh, of course, young man. There’s two ways to get there, the two archways you can see here. One path is quite easy and harmless, while the other is quite problematic and hazardous, even lethal, I would say... You should take the one to the left.”

I ignore the sword and everything else in the cavern and just roll across the platform, sliding through the door in the wall just in time to avoid getting vaporized by the energy beam aiming in my direction.

The giant monster collapses against the stone wall, and the impact, combined with the punishment caused by the energy crystal, shakes the entire cave ceiling. Stanley has just time to roll into safety before an avalanche of rocks and debris blocks the way out. After catching his breath and finally accepting the fact that he’s still alive, Stanley uses the Minor Healing scroll.

Aaaarh... ok, that feels better. I think I can feel one of my ribs bending back into its original position. Unnerving, but I feel good as new again. Sort of.

I high five the hand, but it disappears in a cloud of green smoke. How rude!

I step through the door, walking slowly, to let my eyes get used to the darkness inside. The corridor leads to a small room carved in the stone, it smells of dust and old bones, like an open tomb or an old coffin, opened to reveal but the ashes of its previous owner. There isn’t much inside here, but for a table covered with a decrepit table cloth. It is similar to the ones the fortune tellers use at the town fair, but this one smells like someone died on it and nobody bothered to move the corpse for years.

There’s someone behind the table. I can’t see any form in the dark, just a pair of green glowing eyes, staring without pupils into my own eyes. The voice speaks again.

There’s a short laugh.

“Do not fear, for I do not wield the reaper’s scythe, even when I’m greatly familiar with its feel on my hands.”

“All who live must die. Some die twice. What more do you have to tell me?”

Another dry, broken cackle.

I better make up my mind quick, the bell doesn’t feel very stable, and I can hear the floor below me cracking and falling apart. under its weight.

After a while crawling through the tunnel, squeezing myself between gears and springs, the tunnel opens to a very large cave. There’s no source of light at sight, but I have no problems looking around, like it were plain daylight outside. I don’t even need the light of the staff.

From the opening I can see what looks like the remains of an underground city! Most of it seems to be buried under tons of rock and debris, but there are still simple buildings standing. And more of those giant golden mechanisms laying around, chains, gears half-buried in the ground...

From here I can only see three locations that seem to be in good shape enough to be still of interest. Following the descending path to my right I can see a group of buildings that still stand. To the left there’s a tall, golden structure on top of a hill, with a spiral staircase leading to it. And to the front, practically at the end of the cave there’s a huge, dark hole. Where should I go first?

Alright, let’s explore the buildings first.

Stan finds the entrance to one of the houses that is relatively intact. The door opens to a mostly empty room with more crude paintings engraved in the stone walls. Still, even inside the house, with no source of light, he has no problems to see clearly his surroundings, which is kind of unnerving.

There’s a soft breeze of cold air coming from a trapdoor on the floor, partially blocked by a heavy piece of the ceiling, collapsed on top of it. There’s also another door that connects with the next house. Looks like the people in this town were pretty friendly, the houses are all connected to each other.

The people on the walls are carrying three artifacts towards some sort of creature or thing over on the right of the door. One of the artefacts seems to be that golden rod on the floor, the others are a... box? And some sort of knobbly ball-thing. They seem important, so acquiring them and seeing if the walls explain what they do seems like a hood plan of action.

If there seems to be more wall painting behind the rubble, see if you can prise some loose with your staff to get a look. Otherwise check out the pale rubble in the middle of the room then explore the other parts of the building.

I turned the staff off, and I can still see with no problems. There's no light radiating off the walls or nothing, it's like... like I could see in the dark. I don't know, this is pretty weird.

I grab the golden rod, which isn’t made of actual gold, or it’d be rather useless. I try to pry the rubble on the right , but the rocks are too heavy to budge just with my own strenght. There’s nothing of interest under the rocks at the left side of the room.

This place is creepy, I think I heard something, a sound, like a gurgle coming from the half-blocked trapdoor. But maybe it’s just my imagination.

Oh gods, they’re everywhere! I grab the golden rod just a second before the hands drag the other creature into the abyss and I dart inside the tower, or whatever it is.

The door leads to a tall ladder, that ends up in a small room, with a chair and some kind of control panel. It looks a bit like the ones the flying ships have, but this one doesn’t make any sense! It has a lot of glowing bulbs of different colors an unlabeled switches.

Maybe the golden rod is a handle that forms a lever when combined with the vertical disc in the lower right?

“...There seems to be a door here... Hey, isn’t this unconscious fellow our young student, Mr. Pherguson?”

“Indeed he is!... And he’s even alive!”

“Well, I guess this counts very well as a valuable artifact, so he passed the test!”

“Marvelous... Now I think we should take him to the infirmary, I’m not a man of medicine but I don’t think that the arms of a healthy man should be able to bend that far behind his own back.”
