Silent.
The world is strangely silent.
You can hear the wind rushing past your face, but it says nothing.
You feel disoriented; your head throbs, and you can feel the blood being pulled away from your veins. All you can see is blue, and shades of white.
I failed, you think, over and over, though you can't remember who you failed, or why. It may have something to do with your current predicament, though.

Huh. It does look like a mouse.

Falling? Ah, yes, that makes sense...

Looking at your other hand, you can see that you are clutching something, but you can't feel what it is. It's probably related to the pain in your arm. Your whole body hurts, actually, and you're starting to feel light-headed. Hey, that cloud reminds you of a moose.

As for magic...

Ah, of course! you think, my magic! You summon up your magical reserves, depleted though they are, and call to the wind.

Nothing happens; you keep falling.

Ok, this seems rather worrying. You might bleed out before you hit the ground.

You've never experienced a need for wings before now; and your magic has never failed you before, either. It's too silent.

This is distressing!

You can't see how far down the ground is at the moment, you're about to go through a cloud, it seems.

How should you close up your wounds? There are quite a few of them. It feels like the largest is on your stomach.

Magic of course. But since that doesn't seem to be working... I guess you could try using clothes to make bandages and get them tight enough to hopefully keep from bleeding to death.

Any healing magic at all? Wind magic might have failed because it just can't stand up to terminal velocity, but just a little healing magic should stitch you up well enough.

Sadly, healing magic is not in your job description. Not that you've ever really needed it before. You haven't needed clothes before either, though in hindsight you really should have made some armor or something!
Using your hand that's moving (The right one), you examine what's in your grip. It seems to be a hair of some kind. You feel anguished when you look at it. What do you want to do with it?
You're feeling really light headed now. Your vision blurs, and it's not just from the speed at which you're falling.

Limbs spread out as far as you can glow, that should slow your fall. I've most likely hit terminal V by now, so...if I remember right, aim for trees. You'd think water but at this speed it's like cement, but a tree you might be able to break your speed before it skewer you. If you have any combat might, firing it within a few hundred feet of the ground -might- slow you down too. If you have magic.

More importantly, why did we fail them? I thought we were better then that.

Abilities… Well, as befits your station, you have various Wind related abilities; The Cutting Wind, The Armor of Winds, The Lifting Wind (That’s the one that allows you to fly), The Denying Wind, The Buffeting Wind, The Piercing Wind, The Thermal Wind, The Drawing Wind, The Spinning Wind, The Wind of Aquarius, The Sounding Wind, The Steady Wind, and the Soothing Wind…
But the sylphs aren’t listening to you any more…
You can’t even hear them…

Then it hits you.

You failed in your duty.
You couldn’t protect her.
You probably deserve to die.
That’s why the sylphs abandoned you.
You’re worthless.

You spread your arms, close your eyes, and wait for death to rise up and hit you.

It hurts.

You can’t move.

You think the water broke your neck.

The salt stings your wounds.

You can’t breathe.

What will you do?

Are you sure you even want to be healed?

Not that you have much hope that this will work, but to abandon your life’s purpose, your siblings, your charge…

You’ve already failed them. You’re not sure you should betray them too.

If you've lost anything, you can start anew. You're no longer the person you used to be. You lost that when you failed.

HOWEVER! To give up, to die without even trying, is an even worse crime. Discard your past, and with it, your failures. You are a new person now.

While a soldier has a duty to her commander, the commander, too, has a duty to his soldiers. If you failed through no fault of your own but instead because your commander didn't practice good strategy, or because he didn't get good intelligence on the threats you would be facing, or because you didn't have the tools you needed to exercise your duty, then your failure isn't your fault. If you followed all commands to the best of your ability, and you fought valiantly to the bitter end, then you are not guilty of treason or dereliction of duty. You certainly don't deserve to die for that.

You can still do good, your life can still be worth something. Those who you could help, the wrongs you could right... would you sacrifice those? Would you betray that chance? Would you add that guilt and that failure to your burden into the everafter? Rest will come someday, it will come for all, to rush into it or do anything but fight it is foolishness and waste.

Go on, live.

A new start, huh?

It’s true, now that you think about it. It wasn’t entirely your fault. No one expected that…thing to show up. You fought as hard as you knew how, and you would have fought to the death if it hadn’t thrown you…

Maybe you can serve the ocean… Maybe it wouldn’t be a betrayal. After all…

As your lungs gasp for air, you realize how badly you don’t want to die. You plead with the ocean, one more chance!

You think you feel a change in the currents, but it could be a dying dream.

Your vision darkens, and goes completely black…

The sylphs… are silent. The ocean is emitting a soothing sound, but the salt water still stings. You decide to crawl out of the waves, towards the grass, and find to your delight that you can move all of your limbs, if a bit stiffly. You turn and face the ocean, and sit up in the grasses.

You can see Sol from here, so it seems she’s safe for now. Your siblings must have repelled the creature.

It’s surprisingly nice down here. You hadn’t thought anything could be better than the Skyway. It explains why the sylphs were always so eager to attend their duties down below.

This is a third person view. That is not a new character.

Well, it appears that you have healed. Since you know it wasn't the sylphs, that only leaves one actor, correct? So spend a couple minutes getting yourself together, and then go touch the water and ask what you must do to repay it. Best to get that on the table... and if it doesn't ask for anything, then take your health as a gift and proceed to do whatever with a clear conscience.

Undines are the lesser spirits of water, as Sylphs are the lesser spirits of air. The voices you hear may indeed be Undines, or perhaps a result of psychological strain, or perhaps something altogether other.

Modesty… Will I meet someone higher ranking than me here? No, of course; I no longer have that rank. I suppose I must show deference even to the earth-crawlers now. You think, morosely.

The sky darkens as you make your way to the town; Sol continues her never-ending journey without you.

The sand turns to stone underfoot, and becomes a road. The town sits under a cliff, with a lone tree reaching towards the sky. You count five shelters, and one wooden structure that hangs over the water.

Get their attention.
Gesture out to the ocean.
Cup both your hands together and bob them up and down a bit.
Then clasp your hands, followed by pivoting them back and forth at the wrist to open and close the clasp.
Trace a finger along your most serious wounds.
Return to the cupped hands, then move your thumb from inside the cupped area to the outside and continue that movement into a gesture away from the other hand.
Put one hand up to your face and move it down, closing your eyes.
Move your arms out to your sides as if you were in a large chair, then wobble from side to side a bit.
Open your eyes, put your arms in front of you, and move both your arms in gentle sweeping motions that move from side to side with a small slope upward on one side.
Point towards where you washed ashore.

You’re not sure why they think your hair is a big deal, all your siblings have blue hair. In fact, the only time you’ve seen brown hair, like these earth-crawlers have, is when a a sylph came back muddy.

Freeing your hands from the heavy blanket, you attempt to communicate through hand gestures. You indicate a floating object, a monster, your wounds, something falling out of the floating object, the state of being unconscious and drifting, and finally you point towards where you washed up. This sparks more debate; the little boy asks a question and is ignored. The woman finally throws up her hands.

She goes to the fireplace, scoops some of the stew into a bowl, and begins to mix some plants into it.

You try to say your name while pointing at yourself, “Zephyrus”; all that comes out is a hissing sound. The earth-crawlers look a little un-nerved at that. You feel a little un-nerved yourself. You settle for saying “Zeph” instead.
Thanks! I do have a direction to go in, but at the moment you are extremely lost. :P

…And now it’s before-then.

The skies are clear; the clouds are far below the Skyway today. You can see Sol lighting the way in the distance. Normally, you would be by her side, but today it’s your turn to be the rear guard. These Sylphs are busy chattering away, but they don’t have enough intelligence to hold a real conversation, so they tend to get stuck on one topic for quite some time, repeating the same phrases over and over. It’s cute, yet somewhat annoying when you’re trying to order them around.

You try to sit up and look around, but it’s made difficult by the fact that you can’t seem to move your hands from the position they’re in. That is to say, behind your back and feeling rather poor-circulation-y.

You could run, but it would alert the driver, who would probably stop you. There seems to be only one person, but you can’t reach him to knock him out, the walls are too high.

The gnome giggles. It sounds like rustling grasses. You feel more like smacking that gnome than hugging it.

Still, maybe it’ll help you? You try calling to it, with the traditional form of address to lesser elementals, but your voice still feels raspy; “Help me, [inferior being]”

You slip out of your loosened rope and make your way out of the cart. You don’t seem to have attracted the driver’s attention, but you should probably get out of here soon. You can head into the tall grass, and from there you can either follow the road in one direction or the other, or you can head towards a landmark like that tree. Or, if you’re feeling true to your promise with the gnome, you can head towards the forest on the other side of the rocky wasteland that's on the other side of the road.

They are useless. You think you will call the earth-crawlers dirt-crawlers instead since they are not nice creatures and dirt is closer to earth elementals which you HATE.

It seems that the road curves away from the rocky wasteland here, and disappears behind the tall grass. You can escape into the rocky wasteland safely if you wait ‘till the wagon is out of sight. For now you hide behind the nearby boulder.

The gnome nudges your bare foot. It feels disgusting. It wants to be picked up, you think. EW.

He can't do much, but he's at least trying to help you.

Are you really so well off that you can abuse the few people who are willing to help you? The Sylphs have forsaken you, Sol has revoked your name, you're in debt to the Undine, and this Gnome just saved your life in exchange for agreeing to carry him maybe 100 meters.

“why are you crying” asks the Gnome “do you hurt i too heavy whats wrong”

“N-nothing, j-just shush.” You tell it. You hand it a few pebbles, which pass through into it’s body. You offer a stream of energy and he gets to work. You wait until you can’t hear the cart anymore, and then you begin your journey to the forest.

As you walk, you ask the Gnome if it can pick up any metals around here. “here is clay till deeeeep down i cant reach that far alone and others are jealous and mad that i am leaving but they did not have a plan so i was smarter and now i am going to the trees” It just goes ON and ON and ON.

You keep an eye out for any sharp stones, and add them to the cache in the Gnome’s belly as you walk.

Later in the day, Sol sets. The darkness makes you feel uneasy; even though there is enough light by the stars that you can see clearly, if not in full color.

About six hours later, you suddenly feel yourself run out of energy to give the Gnome. The last time that happened, you fell off the skyway. You feel a sense of dread. You pull the three-fourths completed sword from the Gnome’s belly, just in case. The trees seem much closer.

Usually you’d be half way around the Skyway by now, whereas down here you’ve traveled about ten miles. It’s much easier to move up there, too; gravity doesn’t pull quite so hard.

You walk another mile before you reach the trees, and you cautiously enter them.

“thank you” then a hissing sound “oh i guess that’s not your name any more well thank you any way former [Commander of the Western Winds] im off to find my Captain you should probably find a Captain too right now you’re pretty pathetic i think oh but thats not an insult sorry its true” The Gnome wiggles off your shoulder onto a nearby twig, (Which, surprisingly, doesn’t break off) and prepares to leave.

You don't even know what it is that's drawing you there! It's bait for the trap!

oooo that is sneaky and mean who would do that?! but i guess it cant hurt to check if it is a trap, just in case.

You back away from the building, and feel the desire to find that wonderful thing inside the building go away. I guess it was a trap. Too bad about the Gnome. You won’t lose any sleep over it, though.

You can sort of remember what the lines inside the circle looked like, but the edges of the circle are fuzzy in your memory.

It's a crab cage for spirits and people aligned with them.

Person sets it up, leaves it for a few days, comes back, delicious spirits to bind into items, and..... not sure what he'd do with people like you...

It must have been a human wizard.
That's why the trees are all dying and the wind is so still here.

I think we're going to have to break that circle in order to fix this.
Look around, do you see anybody?
If nobody is around, then march back there and use your sword to score the ground to break the outermost circle, then run away from it. You don't want to spend much time in that mind altering area, and if the circle breaks you don't want to be too close.
>>

You have no idea, either.

You don’t see anyone around, but the sky is getting lighter, the stars are getting harder to see.

It’s now or never.

You stride towards the circle, stone sword in hand and even though you feel yourself being drawn with the promise of good things you dont go in you dont give in you raise the stone sword high and bring it down forcefully.

explain that vermin repellers are scattered around outside and you think if you break them all then rats would come. wouldn't need so many unless vermin were common.
on the ceiling should be a hole, the chimney, try that. if that doesn't work then try sucking the blue away from the black so it loses power.

Act timid. Raise one hand to be level with your shoulder and show them the open palm, then move it back and forth very slightly. Say hello to them.

Wait for her to go somewhere else, then slowly get up and walk over to the boy and hug him. Then murmur "Thank you" and give him another kiss.
See if you can lead him outside. You could stand to bask in Sol's light, and doing what you can to help them seems to be the right thing to do after all that chaos you accidentally caused.
That guy was very magicy so he was probably the one who made that circle; but he didn't even know what an elemental was so he probably didn't mean to trap them like that.
It was probably a trap for things like that orange jerk, and the elementals were all caught by accident. If we can explain the problem then they might be able to make one that doesn't trap elementals!

Wait, getting ahead of ourselves here. Kisses! Hugs! Cute boy!

yes, explain that you broke that trap because you saw it captureing spirits. but the backlash made you a little insane, so you ate something that made you leave your body, and then you were looking for a way to get back in because all your defenses were stopping you, and so you entered his house cause it was a big blue blob so you thought maybe it had something to help but then you got trapped and the shadow guy was a meany. you were trying to ask him to tell you to help but he was lying and saying you were a spy. so you had to use his tools to get out.

You are Uluaris? I am Zeph.
Also, I am sorry but I accidentally broke some woman's anti-sickness thing a vermin thing and a good luck thing. I don't know if they know yet but they shouldn't not know.
I shouldn't have broken the circle but it was very bad and I didn't know what else to do. It hurt good spirits not just bad ones. Plants, earth, and water all die without them. Stops wind and heat.
I am sorry about the fire. I didn't want to hurt anybody but the trapped Salamanders were so angry and they wouldn't stop."

Call the girl over and translate for her, since she probably wants to know what we're talking about.
Ok, bare basics. The world is run and maintained by four kinds of elementals, these elementals draw their power from Sol, the sun, and Lune, the Moon.
Sylphs are air spirits. They cause the wind to blow, control the clouds and rain, and make air breathable. They are nurtured by Sol.
Undine are water spirits. They cause water to flow and be drinkable, handle waves, and create clouds. They are nurtured by Lune.
Salamanders are fire spirits. They control the seasons both hot and cold, and create and control fires. They are nurtured by Sol.
Gnomes are earth spirits. They control rocks and the ground, and are what make plants grow and live. They are nurtured by Lune. A Gnome was working on my sword when I arrived here, by the way, and that was how I first noticed the trap.
You must have noticed something was killing the trees and the air, and even poisoning the water and the earth itself. That was your trap's work, it was killing the world a little at a time."

That doesn’t explain much. He goes upstairs and I follow him. He wakes Siisa up with a poke, and hands her the liquid. She groans, but drinks it.

I grab on to Uluaris’ sleeve, I am very worried about Siisa, so I ask “"What did you do to her? What's happening; why?”
He yawns, and says “calm down its just [wizard] training nothing special” Siisa drops the drink and starts foaming at the mouth ”but yeah she wont be able to play with you today”
He gathers up the cup and begins to walk down the stairs. ”and since you broke the trap youre going to help me fix it today”

We make our way through the town, some townspeople are already up. They seem a bit startled by me, but don’t say anything to me or Uluaris.

Just as I'm beginning to give up, a Gnome shimmers into being in front of me. I think it might be the same Gnome. Honestly, I'm pretty disappointed that more spirits aren't here throwing themselves at my feet, but I guess you have to work with what you have. so i didnt find the captain and i was wondering if we could keep looking? The Gnome considers this, as seriously as it’s silly little elemental brain will allow it to. “well if its an order i guess~” “It is.” “okay~” I can only assume that it made itself visible to Uluaris, it looks exactly the same to me.

“Also, have you seen my stone sword anywhere?”

“its where you dropped it!”

“Ah. What about the other elementals, are they okay?”

“yup! one is even showing itself right now”

I will try to keep my worry down to minimal levels, but even seeing that symbol freaks me out a little.

As I turn the pages, I see what I know to be the symbol for "spirits" next to a picture of something that looks vaguely like the Soul-Thief's true form. Then there's a picture of a tree and some flowers, and a symbol next to that. After that is a few drawings of different circles with those sharp edged black squiggles next to them. Then it goes to body parts; followed by colors; and ends with a series of black squiggles next to colorful symbols.

The afternoon passes far too slowly. I stay away from the windows, but there's very little to do besides ignoring the Thief. I look at the [books], but I don't understand any of them; I look at the [masks] on the wall, but I don't know what they do; I consider tasting some of the good smelling things on the shelves, but they might be poison so I decide against it. It's a losing battle against boredom.

I never had this problem on the Skyway; just being around Sol kept me happy.

After an eternity, night falls, and Uluaris emerges from his room. "Zeph, go wake up Siisa." he says, and I do it even though he was rude about it because I'm so BORED.

I gently nudge Siisa awake, it seems she managed to fall asleep. Her eyes look strange, but at least she's got her color back. She looks surprised to see me, and then I remember what I look like and explain who I am. She's tired, but she picks up on it quickly.

We go downstairs, to find Uluaris gone and the Thief out of the circle. What should I do?!

"What is [human word]? Can you describe it? Or draw its symbol for me?
I would also like to see the symbol for 'person' as well."
Siisa tries to explain, but finally gives up, saying "i dont know words!"
Instead, she draws it for me. She draws the Eyes, and then points to them and says the [human word]. I don't get it, I DO have eyes. Just not freaky beast eyes. And it doesn't LOOK like the earth crawlers have those freaky eyes, either.
Next, she draws the pentagonal shape I saw in the book, points to it, and says "[Person]"
"Soul thief, I want to find something that would convince you to give Siisa back her soul, but Uluaris' soul is not an option."
"Mhm?" It inquires, draping itself over Siisa. Before I have a chance to explain my plan, I hear a clop clop clop sound outside. I want to go see what it is, but Uluaris said stay away from the windows...
Luckily, I don't have to wonder for long, as Uluaris flings open the door and beckons to us. As soon as I step outside I see that there's a cart with a strange creature in front of it. Uluaris grabs my arm and pushes me into the back of the cart, then covers me with heavy blankets. "dont move" he says.
Sigh. More waiting. At least I have Undine and Gnome with me.
[Siisa vision:
I knew as soon as I saw Thief out of his cage that we were going on a trip, how exciting! I guess Uluaris is going to sell the golem he made? (I could tell he was making one 'cause Thief was screaming, but I didn't think it would look like Zeph!)

"The problem isn't that spirits don't die; they can be killed; the problem is that they don't really understand what that entails. Most spirits are pretty interchangable, so when one of them dies they just find a replacement. Don't be fooled into thinking they're like us, that's how they take advantage of you. In any case, the closest words they have to "die" is [vanish] or [go away]."

"Uluaris, would you please not try to force Zeph to do things? It doesn't work, and she doesn't like it, so could you please not do it?"

So the Eyes mean go get killed? Now I'm really confused. And why do humans get hurt even when nothing's hurting them? It just doesn't make sense to me.

[Siisa vision:

We sit in silence for a while, and then I have a question for Uluaris! "Why do you always try to order Zeph around? It doesn't seem to be working , after all. I think she'd like it better if you didn't"

"I think I'm getting closer to figuring out how to command it. As for the why; you always want to be able to control spirits, even if they seem friendly. They're unpredictable and liable to do you harm if you let them do as they please. So it can not be happy all it likes, as long as it does what I say."

I still think he should try to be nice to spirits, but I'm sure he has his reasons.]

Lune is pretty too. Not as nice as Sol, of course, but not hideous as I'd imagined her.
