I went to get sugar just in case I needed some. It is possible to make a new coat with this thing, but without the automation it would be faster just to make some fabric and make a coat the old fashioned way.

They don't know what happened to the arm. It just disappeared.
It is theoretically possible to make something sentient with the machine, but you'd have to know the construction of the brain down to an atom and connect all neurons manually, so it'd probably take several lifetimes.

Our resources are actually not all that unlimited. Space is not exactly littered with stray asteroids, and we have to trade with humans on a semi-regular basis to get, for example, sulphur or chromium. But I figure I gave my goddamn arm for the fleet, so I'm entitled to some free stuff from time to time.
Every atom the machine can make corresponds to a three-digit number on the numpad of the terminal. Carbon is 402, oxygen is 153, hydrogen is 901, nitrogen is 061 and so on. As far as we can tell, every possible combination does something. Seeing as we know of only 118 elements, it is kind of a mystery what the majority of numbers does, and we haven't found any logic behind which number creates which element.

If we could turn energy to matter with particle accelerators, we'd hardly need the MEC, now would we? The problem is that we can only make matter-antimatter pairs with particle accelerators, and those have a tendency to turn themselves back to energy.

What's after us isn't a wave moving outward from the supernova, it's a single entity that is constantly making a beeline for our current location. As such, we can go around, under or over it, and also return to places we've previously visited, but it keeps chasing us. In fact, the fleet's flagship has an AI that is constantly maintaining a model of the entity's movements.
Yeah, seems to me this physics talk would be the purview of /questdis/. But that's just me. Just in case: http://tgchan.org/kusaba/questdis/res/329926.html

I did mention I had to do today, didn't I? Next step: alcohol.
