>>Oh, and are ghosts used to relay messages over long distances, by chopping their corpse up and leaving pieces in either towns or carried? If so, that means House Geofahn will immediately send word out to all their holdings as soon as they realize you've run off. So you won't be able to keep ahead of the news by moving fast.
That’s exactly how it works. I mean, that’s why it’s been important to not let on that I’m running away, right? Every House Geofahn member carries at least a dozen corpse relics on them, all day every day.
The moment someone knows I’m running away, everyone knows.
My family doesn’t have any House Geofahn relics, though. If I don’t show up home tonight, my mom will have to wait until morning before coming to town and sending out the alert.
>>Even with the partial cover of his shrine, his corpse has been exposed to the elements for years, and it rains all the time here. I doubt it will be harmed by water at this point, unless you leave it submerged long enough to come apart.
Okay, okay. That’s right. I mean, our culture’s basically built on how well we can preserve our corpses, a little water shouldn’t hurt, right? Even if the skin comes off, the bone will work fine, anyway! I’ll still need to get something safer to carry him around with, though, for sure.
>>Merchant's shop seems like a good next stop.
Yeah, let’s just get it over with—
>>is that a couple of geofahn members coming down the way?
>>House Geofahn members rounding the corner right now.
--whoa wait what?
Oh no oh no that is absolutely a couple of House Geofahn members. Yes, okay, the people in those colors, yes, those are the ones we don’t want to be seen by. I mean, by this point, no one should think I’m running away, but I don’t need unwanted attention either.
>>They're too close for you to have time to duck out of the way, so just walk with purpose right past them.
>>They're focused on each other, so if you keep moving at the same pace, and make no movements that'd draw their attention, that'll be the best chance to get past without being noticed.
With my clothes this wet, my mantle is almost as dark a green as the town’s color. If I don’t make a big deal about passing them, they probably won’t even notice me! They walk right into the open and I just step around behind them. They’re too busy talking to even care! I keep on my way to the market.
>>Actually, before then, find someplace to hide that you can scope out the marketplace for members of House Geofahn. With the wedding tomorrow there's bound to be one or two around.
Good idea. Maexiks only runs an outdoor stall, so I take an extra good luck before going to her.
Maexiks’ stand isn’t hard to find because she’s the only merchant here who isn’t a dog.
She’s a bug person. They don’t have a remnant of their own—their kind just sort of find what homes they can. She can speak our language pretty well, but she’s a merchant, so that isn’t, like, a surprise. When my family still had some money I had a tutor and I learned some of the bug language. I can’t speak it very well, but I can understand it okay.
I’m about the only dog here who can actually talk to Maexiks in her own language, so she and I are friends. Well, acquaintances. Like the Beggar and I. I guess I don’t know anyone well enough to outright call them a friend.
In any case, it’ll let us plan in complete secrecy.
Maexiks greets me as I come up to her. “Sabhaxlia! You actually came.”
I absolutely cannot read Maexiks’ emotions. Even her voice is a sharp, unnatural slurry of noise. I told her I might be coming by, though. I told her I might be running away. I don’t think she actually believed me until now. “Hi Maexiks.”
She twists her head a bit. The spots on her eyes follow me no matter where I stand. “You will need many things.”
Right to it. That’s okay. “I have, uhm, some ideas. A tarp, rope, a backpack, a sleeping thing of some kind, a blanket, a knife/hatchet, food and water as very basics. Uh, two smaller waterskins, with straps, if you can? I’ll need new clothes, too. Probably not in Tashikoxix colors. Can you even do that?”
“All of it can be done.”
“Today?”
“I had a dozen dreams for you last night. I wasn’t sure which to believe, so I held all of them. I have made many preparations already.”
“Thank you so much. Oh, uhm, maybe a rain hat? I need a finger reliquary too. And a compass.”
Maexiks and I work out the plan. She’ll need about three hours to go around the other merchants and get all my things together. I spend all the money Beggar gave me, but not much more than that. I have almost as much as I woke up with. The compass was pretty pricey, but Maexiks isn’t making any profit on this at all.
There’s a few outstanding issues.
First, if I’m getting new clothes, what colors should I get them in? I obviously don’t want to be walking around in House Tashikoxix colors. Maexiks can get me clothes in this town’s pattern without any problem. She says she can scrounge up dyes in any color I might, want, also. I’ve only ever worn my family’s colors my whole life. If I want to decide what I wear, now’s the time. I’d need to pick out a dominant and submissive color for the pattern. I’m basically making up a family.
Second, if there’s anything else I want Maexiks to procure for me, this is my last chance. This is a small town, but she’s resourceful.
Third, while Maexiks is busy, I’ll need a safe spot to wait for the next three hours. There’s still a light rain, and I’m starting to think House Geofahn has a bunch of people here for the wedding. Being out on the streets might be a dumb idea. I think I want to talk to Beggar, too, to plan our next step. I could hang out at the stranger’s inn, find a secluded tree, go out in some alley, I dunno. I just want to sit down.
