You wake up after an eon-long slumber. The last bits of memories slowly fade away from your minds. The only thought that lingers: you won, but the price for the victory was enormous.

You slowly adapt to the senses of your wielder.
Something is happening. You hear creaking voices, struggling to pronounce words; you feel strange tickling; and you sense your carrier talking back without trouble and answering that feeling without using voice. Metal clashes against carapace, someone falls to the ground and stands up again, soil is pierced repeatedly on the run.
Even the language you are using to think feels unfamiliar to some parts of you.

Your sensations become clearer, now you can inspect your surroundings. You’re in a clearing in a forest. In the middle of it stands a long ago burnt wooden hut, before which two wounded antfolks fight each other while trying to speak aloud. The third, snake-like figure slithers around the ruined house in expanding circles, probing the ground with some kind of a sword.
— Llleaaa-vvee...
— Qu-eeenn ww-ont rrisk letttt-inng ellf ll-livve
— I-iii’-mm nn-ooottt…
— Wwe di-ie, bbut ttake you witthshs us, Quennn wi-i-l revviv-e
— Iii bb-bbbe-e—
— You and your Queen hire me specifically to NOT let you zealots die! — The strange creature shouts from over its shoulder. — I’ve almost finished; endure a bit more, and we will go searching into the hut itself. And then I will get my answers, elf.
The fight looks weird: the two are twitching, trying to open themselves for the blows, then in an instant attempting to block the incoming attack or to dodge. They continue the talk, but you could swear the roles reverse from time to time.

>Change comes with time. The only path forward is to adapt.
>Who is your wielder?

The creature shudders in surprise.
— ⰱⰾⱔⱅⱐ! Are you the Nazar’s orb? I was expecting you to start working half a day ago. Save your advice for another time, we have a plan already, and we can't risk changing it right now. Shame on me for expecting his baubles to work properly, I guess.

>Are you being forced to fight for the very enemy that you have sworn to destroy?
— What?! No, of course not.

>Anything we can do to help? or shall we just watch
—All goes as planned, so no. The best you can do right now is to get what is happening, so if something goes wrong, you can do your thing. In short, the ants were updating the maps and had found this place in only two versts—uh, a mile from the town, where literally none of them had ever been in all eight years since our arriv…—it had stuttered again, as under a tree the sword sunk into the ground deeper than usual. — Nice, found something. Anyway, later mages found out this is a place of power or whatever, and archivists have reported some recluse actually lived here before everything went in flames with half of the town and the lord’s family.

The creature did its strange thing, the tingling feeling appeared again as in response, and the noises from where antfolk are fighting became louder. The creature shrunk its right hand right into a slim twig-like appendage before shoving it into soil.
— And in the last at least twenty years exists the goddamn cult of so-called elf worshippers. — it continued talking. — This is a literal evil, not some regular “a rural priest has read the Holy Scripture with his ass instead of eyes” heresy.

>yeah this is a neat scene to wake up to. The hell is going on here?
—The ants can’t risk it being a cult’s place, plus Volk and I have personal interest, so we are dealing with it right now. — The creature coiled around the point and began pulling something from the ground. — We three are the scouts, and in the forest, there are at least a dozen arbalests with a couple healers, including Volk.

>Why are the antfolk fighting?
—It turned out there is something that can possess people. Usually no one is able to do it except for some older brethren and elves, and I wish it’s the latter. I must get my answers.

So its trying to possess both of them, but ends up switching back and forth? seems silly

So what have you found there?

>What's the plan?

— Overall, to find the sources of both effects: possessions and this thing with maps. Right now, we'll search the land around the hut to prevent unexpected things later when we’ll search the hut itself. The entity is trying to defend the house but doesn’t really care about the place around.

The thing in the soil definitely gives way.

>So its trying to possess both of them, but ends up switching back and forth? seems silly

— Yes, indeed. It’s most likely some kind of a basic golem but without a body somehow. It doesn't even try to aim for vital parts or places where guys’ carapaces begin to fail. And it probably isn’t trying to hold me because the last time it tried it, it only managed to stun me. In that time ants almost got into the house, so it was left with no other choice but to switch to them.

The creature finally pulls some small chest from the ground.

>So what have you found there?

— A very old chest. Let’s see…

The chest is so ancient the metal parts are rusted through in some places, and the wooden ones crumble under a firm touch. It’s a miracle it was unearthed in one piece. The creature turns its hand back into a normal shape and grips the chest more comfortably to then examine. After a couple of seconds, it just breaks the bottom out and takes out a sealed clay pot in a way better condition than the chest itself. Inside the pot there is an old piece of paper with a handful of crystal-like shards.

— Aaand that’s another bunch of runic crap from the caves. — the creature grumbles in disappointment after a brief look at the paper. — This is already far from the house, I doubt there will be something else. Guess it’s time: I’m going in.

>What is this, a burial urn and last words?
— No idea what is written there, but it’s definitely not a burial urn. — The creature answered on the go. — The shards inside don’t look like ash, and the jug itself isn’t decorated at all.
>that's hard to read
>do you know who Tgifa son of Gtot is?
>sounds like fanatic ramblings
— Wait, are you able to rea— The creature abruptly stops right when you get almost stunned by what feels like you just got another batch of sensory organs. You adapt somewhat quickly, but you can’t say the same about your wielder. The feeling of someone else’s panic and utter fear washes over you. The creature looks more annoyed and angry than scared, so you aren’t sure yet what that is.
Despite being on the other side of the hut, you somehow see two antmen slowly getting up from the ground.

Ah, it tried to possess you again, and we can feel it too. The spirit doing the possession is terribly scared. Consider showing it mercy? We are going in, regardless.

Yeah, we can read the note, mostly. Can you? What's the second sun? If the urn isn't a burial urn, then... I guess it could be someone's buried treasure? I'm guessing you don't know what the shards are for. Probably a good idea to hold onto unknown things found in buried chests.

alternatively, if we're speaking to the spirit now...

Hello? Our wielder thinks you are some kind of "golem" but I suspect not. What are you?

you lost the antmen again didn't you? I don't think you'll be able to keep this group out. Why don't you negotiate with us? might be able to get you something in exchange for leaving us alone.

— GET OUT OF MY HOME! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!
The creature stands still in the same pose while shivering slightly.
>alternatively, if we're speaking to the spirit now...
>Hello? Our wielder thinks you are some kind of "golem" but I suspect not. What are you?
— I’M NOT A GOLEM I’M NOT AN ELF I’M NOT A THREAT PLEASE PLEAAAAHSHEE!…
The ants, as it seems, have finally come to their senses. One of them runs off to get some distance and begins approaching the hut from another side.
The creature shudders weirdly and shouts: “Cease!”. The antmen stop, and the tingling sensation appears again.
>Are we currently in contact with the spirit? Hello can you hear/understand us? If you share your motivations with us we may be able to mediate with the living for you.
>you lost the antmen again didn't you? I don't think you'll be able to keep this group out. Why don't you negotiate with us? might be able to get you something in exchange for leaving us alone.
— LEAVING YOU ALONE?! YOU ARE THE ONES WHO CAME HERE! LEAVE ME ALONE!!!
This time the feeling that usually follows the tingling doesn’t appear. After a couple of seconds, the ants continue to approach cautiously.

Well we've got a conflict of interests here. But luckily we're a neutral third party that doesn't know what's going on.

so lets negotiate. You want them out of your home, and I think they don't want to be here any longer than necessary. If they can accomplish their task they ought to leave you be.

Ah, interesting. You're like us, aren't you? We are a Nazar's orb, whatever that is. Looks like you're a pendant? Are you aware that your wearer is dead?
