While Aloe isn't looking you quickly sneak a nibble. It tastes like a mango lemonade gummy fruit, but the mouth feel is more like a sort of plastic, if it were also made of sunlight. Not bad.

>check spellbook for something that restores food freshness

You take a look at the food spread across the table. Some of it looks fine, but a lot isn't.

"Hey are you hungry? I can maybe fresh some of this stuff up and we can have some lunch before we move on."

You open the book and begin to leaf through it. Runes and incantations fill your mind, things you've seen in the book before but always seem to forget reappearing in your mind. You need a spell to restore the freshness of the food. Warmth fills you, a soft wind rustling your hair.

A focused calm envelops you, mana channeling through your cap and into your body, and you begin to draw circles in the air. The food on the table rapidly rejuvenates before your eyes, fresh fruits and meats, even the bread has a bit of freshly cooked steam wafting off of it.

Aloe looks over your shoulder as you work. "Oh, hey i recognize some of those passages! Why are you casting spells from a cleric tome?" You snap the book shut immediately.

You look at the cover as you tuck it into your pocket hollows and notice the eye is fully open when it should have lost a little power just now. You glance at Aloe. She looks taken aback, but otherwise unharmed. A shiver ripples down your spine, but you try to ignore it.

"S-sorry," you mumble awkwardly."It's not a cleric tome, there's uh, you know. There's some crossover, with, uhm," already the memory of the page contents is leaking out of your mind like water through a loose mesh, "crosses over with uhh... the ... spell. You know, like uh..." your mind is completely blank again. "Anyway... the food is ready to eat now."

Aloe looks confused. "Oh, I guess mages need to know a little bit of every school of magic, right? Restoring food is probably like healing magic."

"Y-yeah! I think so, I'm not too versed in it, but yeah, that probably is it." You grab a chunk of bread and stuff it in your mouth so you can't answer any more questions about the book. You're not even sure you could explain it to her, but you're glad at least that she didn't see more than she did.

The two of you lunch it up here in the pantry, chatting idly about different things.

"So, ahh, I don't mean to pry, but , aren't you a little... exposed...? for, dungeon crawling...?" Aloe asks. You can tell she's trying and failing not to stare at your huge boobs.

"Oh, these?" you squish them together playfully, "heh, it was for a puzzle I was caught up in earlier. I could make them bigger for you if you want?" you say slyly.

"Oh I mean I, ah, if , if you, did, feel like, doing, that, I , I mean, I wouldn't ,, Try and ., stop you,, if you wanted , to do. that."
>>
No. 1129788 ID: 0404f2

well she did ask, just make sure to take your top off before doing so, so you don't accidentally ruin your top. I know these dungeons usually have tons of gear laying around for the taking but it could still be awhile before you find another top and it might not even be suitable for your class. Might as well just play it safe and take your top off before casting the spell to save yourself the headache.

> why are you embarrassed about your book?

You’re not embarrassed at all. You’re afraid.

Put simply, you’re actually a warlock, not a mage. You’re pact-bound to an unseen force rich with secret knowledge and power. The product: perfect knowledge of literally everything in absolute detail. The price: well, that's a tricky thing to explain.

{The terms of the pact dictate (in summary) that Charlotte can only recall the infinite knowledge while reading the book, and that it leaves her head as soon as she stops. There is a version of Charlotte, a memory of her soul imprinted in the tone that is drained when using the book, measured by how wide the eye in the cover is open. This allows her to cast spells from the book without harming herself, but she needs to be careful, lest she extinguish that memory and lose her soul entirely.

But when Aloe Vera read merely a couple passages of, what to her looked like scripture, the book latched onto her for just a moment and took something. A memory in her soul, a fundamental fact, maybe something small, unnoticeable in the moment, in exchange for a mere scrap of knowledge. Just enough to make her a little bit hungry for more.

If her or anyone else ever kept reading, they would lose more and more and more and more until the book made a final offer: Accept infinite power for whatever remains of your soul.

Reading the book makes you forget important things about yourself until you’re offered this pact. Pact bound readers cannot keep knowledge outside of the book. Charlotte doesn’t know what happens to people who don’t accept the terms, because she has already accepted them. She hopes she doesn't find out what happens.

As for the mechanics of reading the book, she can spend time searching for a specific thing and depending on the complexity of understanding required, she will either find it quickly, or it will take some searching to surface it. Outside of combat she has a lot of time to find what she's looking for, but in a fight it’s a lot harder to rip through the pages looking for the right spell. Not impossible, just difficult.
She could look up literally anything else, but the knowledge leaves her as soon as she closes the book, so she really only uses it for spells because those remain after being cast, and the knowledge of them isn’t required outside of the casting.

But you... no, not you... The Real You, you're different. I don't think I can take anything away from you. So I wonder... now that you understand the terms and conditions, what WOULD you give me, to remember something for Charlotte?

Think about it.}

>what would you offer to remember something for Charlotte
We can offer art, information, poetry, maybe even music. We can also offer... an agreement to make Charlotte do something. So long as it doesn't harm her or her friends, or entrap any innocents in your pact.
>looking for spells in combat is difficult
Well that's inconvenient, how are we gonna fight things? I guess we could apply long term buffs ahead of time, or summon minions...
OH. Use bookmarks! Bookmark a few general purpose offensive and defensive spells with red for offense and blue for defense. Other colors for specific spells. I bet the book will only allow bookmarking a certain number of spells before it does something to disable the bookmarks, but it should work for basic stuff. Obviously it won't let us do something like label the bookmarks to say exactly what they are and start making a quick lookup system to turn it into a kind of wizard tome. Though, I guess at some point there would be too many bookmarks to physically use them properly.

While it's upside down and possibly stuck in the floor, grab its wings to immobilize it. Then have Aloe bash it with any nearby pantry utensil (tenderizer maybe?).

Magic exploits wise - what if we, outside of combat, memorize a special word/gesture, which, when performed, will activate a spell we 'buffed' ourself with?

For example, we make a written note that explains: Current stored spell - Saying 'sharkpants' will cause a magic flying sword to be summoned and fight enemies for us.

Then, we peer into the book and cast a spell that does said effect as a delayed spell, triggered when you say the codeword sharkpants. You close the book. You forget about the spells details, but you can read your note and have a delayed spell ready to use in combat!

What can we offer the book? Hmmm. How about obscure trivia from a dimension foreign to it? (I.e. if we can state a fact the quest writer doesn't already know about or finds amusing, we get a favor).

The cap, while useful and fashionable, might be a liability in its current form, being easy to knock off or get damaged.

When its safe to do so, see if we can change its shape into something more sturdy or harder to lose (without sacrificing its innate magic), like a headband, bandana, ring, bracelet, choker...

How about a short story?
A screaming van passed by. He hated them. They would steal people away from their homes and take them to the white rooms. He pulled out the last bucket of frozen noodles from the dumpster and carried on his way. The showoffs lived in a big museum where they put everything up on shelves and then threw them away a week later. He hated those showoffs. The sidewalk broke up into tiny islands and then into a field of long grass. Finally, the grass turned into the wooden porch of an old house. He made sure to side step the broken boards and the holes that rotted through the floor. The screaming van had took him, once. The men in the white room tapped his lumber and scolded him when the sap was dirty. What did it matter if it was dirty? The sap isn't for eating. He dropped the frozen noodles on the table and took the lead needles into the living room. They went in the steel bowl, and were crushed by the back end of a screwdriver. The man smiled as he followed the curled wires from bowl to plug. As the plug and outlet met, the microwaves lit up and began to buzz. The powder inside the bowl leaped and sparked, eventually settling down into a floating image. As the man looked into the image, a set of sparks lit the inside of his head, and he knew what it wanted: computer hearts. Then, as the image began shaking, he frowned. Unplugging the machine, he looked towards the shelf of glass jars and identified the third one as fried. He scowled. The traps outside were empty.

Now, if I may ask, what is the weakness of a devil skull?
