And it is said that if earth had ever regained value to the eaters, and their eyes to turn again to the land they had forgotten, a thousand hands would reach out from the darkness and pull the world apart.

"So you see, you are valuable to them. A bee with a gun is practically unmatched in combat against eaters, and so they will try and claim you to fight for them. So, you have a destiny to help defend the earth from the eaters."

"How hot's the water you're in?" You ask gruffly.
She looks taken aback for a moment before regaining her composure.
"No, no. This isn't really for my sake, it's for a friend."
Friend? The only thing worse than the mob asking you for a favor is the mob asking you to do a favor for someone too hot to touch.
"Can't say I find that reassuring, miss..."
"Linda."
"Miss Linda. Your... more powerful friends are too scared to help? Tried asking them?"
"Well, I'm not sure they'd like me asking anybody, and I don't want them to find out."
This case is already bordering on radioactive. It's probably best not to get involved at all.
"Miss Linda, you're saying some quite alarming things, and I'm just not sure I can really--"
"Wait."Miss Linda interjects."Before you say no, just listen to the details first."
You sigh. This isn't the type of gal who you'd be able to stop talking, anyway.

"This is all because Betty's hooking up with Billy, but she's also in an affair with Kerry, one of Teddy's squad. Billy and Kerry hate each other, so if they ever found out Betty was sleeping with the other... I don't wanta think about that. But, anyways, I was thinking you could maybe help find her. "
Her explanation wasn't as reassuring as she'd hoped. You open your mouth to issue a quick refusal, but she blurts something out before you get the chance.
"Your real name is Walter!"
How could she know that? You crossed half the country so you'd never hear that name again, and yet she's spitting it out like month-old milk. How are you supposed to respond to that!?

Right. If she's already bringing you trouble, she's too dangerous to work for.
"Listen, I don't know who this 'Walter' fella is, or why you seem to mistake me for him, but you're gonna get out of here and stop wasting my time."
She sighs.
"I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this, Walter."

She puts a purse on the table and pulls out a gun you recognize all too well.
"You know, there's an unsolved murder out in Townsend. You've probably never heard of such a po-dunk little village, But the sheriff is one of the most persistent men I've ever met."
Your eyes narrow.
"Interesting circumstances too. The victim was shot in the head, but was found in his car underwater."
You can't believe it's come back to you.
"Couple'a kids found it when swimming in the lake. They weren't too happy about that."
A quick death was too good for the fucker anyway.
"The sheriff's afraid of the water, so he never looked that car."
It wasn't until you skipped town that you realized the matchbox you dropped in the struggle.
"That's why he missed the matchbox."
Who even thought it was a good idea to put a nightclub next to the trainstation?
"It was from a club. 'Precious.' Right next to a trainstop."
You needed a smoke, but ran out of matches.
"The attendant said someone had asked for matches as soon as he left the train."
This is going nowhere. Time to nip it in the bud.
"Checking the destinations for the train that night-"

Damn. Hendrick warned you about this. 'The mob's got resources. Any dirt you got they'll find and use against you.' Shoulda listened to him more.
Where do you even want to start? You could look for Betty's apartment, maybe go down to Teddy's bar. Jethro's speakeasy is run out of the back of a music store, and the museum might have some clues.

Where we wanna start is with Jimmy's crew. Take a wild card turn, question Kerry. Sleeping around with your superior's colleague, it ain't the sorta dirt you want floating around free. And dirt's what makes the world go round, ain't it?

You figure Teddy wanted someone on his team who could meanmug just about anybody. It's useful for collecting protection fees. Poor suckers like this aren't told a whole lot, but aren't too loyal either. It's a good place to start. You sit in front of him, and he looks up.

"The club's not open. Get out or I'll make ya." The words seem more like a formality than an actual command.
Ignoring the statement; "I'm a private investigator. I've got a few questions."
He gives a gruff but defeated sigh.
"Now, what do you know abo-"
Before you can finish the question, he starts lamenting his own problems.
"Why couldn't they finished what they started, man? The humans. They added mites with the mutated DWV, but didn't get rid of the old DWV."
You're not exactly sure how to respond. If you commiserate, he might become too distracted to answer any questions. It might be best to rush through this discussion to get to the important part.

Internally consider how in certain insects, it was only the top brass, the queens and the consorts, who got wings, and how things have reversed in the modern era.

Externally...
Say, he's some kinda anthropologist, is he? Well, you're more into Entomology, specifically the findin' and preservation of endangered dames. The name Betty ring a bell to this palooka?

As is, there just so happens to be an individual out there, the survival of which may be in jeopardy. Name's Betty, happen to catch an iota of information on her?"
