Good morning, you.

It’s the first Monday after the holidays and the town is open for business again. You’ve already found plenty of reasons not to go into the office today, first and foremost the fact that your father’s vanished. It’s snowing out and while you have keys to the company van, you don’t have a license. Not like there’s many calls in the winter anyway; who needs the services of Duncan and Daughter Wildlife Management (est. 1979.) in January? Plus, even if you skip work today, it’d be hypocritical for your MIA boss to fire you.

…The house is big, though, and it feels awfully empty right now. Maybe it'd be good to get out.

Nice tats. What's your name?

Well, if you can't drive then that leaves walking around in the snow. Time to bundle up and... what's within walking distance?

You told the police, right? Not that they'll do anything for months, it's that getting this stuff legalized lowers the probability that you'll be falsely arrested and trafficked by the legal system.

Check the news bulletins.

Vanished huh?
Now, is this a sinister vanishing or is he just off up to some mischief somewhere?

No doubt the wildlife have taken him as revenge. Better stock up on supplies before they come for you next.

>Nice tats. What's your name?
They were a late act of rebellion. Your name is Iris.

>Now, is this a sinister vanishing or is he just off up to some mischief somewhere?
Your gut tells you it's sinister.
Sure, he gets up to mischief- pretty often in fact. He's a hunter, by trade of course but it's also a passion of his. He once spent 9 days tracking a bear and in the end got it right in the eye with his crossbow. He never goes out unprepared, and he never gets taken by surprise. Besides, it's been snowing for nearly a week now. There's no tracks out there. It just wouldn't make sense for him to go.

>You told the police, right?
Of course. You called Sheriff Bugg's office at exactly the 24-hour mark, just like in your police procedurals. He didn't seem too concerned, said something about "probably a hunting trip" and "we'll put together a search party when the snow lets up." That was 2 days ago.

>Check the news bulletins.
You don't see much point in watching the news- Woodborough's a small town so it rarely affects you much beyond contributing to your DREAD. Updates on world events mostly come from your dad. He's not here, though, so you hop on Facebook and check the Kadia Region Community group.

...Which is surprisingly active today.

Megan Trent, who bullied you relentlessly until she dropped out of high school, needs a babysitter for tonight.

A couple farmers in Leon Valley report seeing plumes of smoke from the base of Wolf Mountain last night. Obviously not wildfires, but no one's fessed up to off-season camping.

An older woman appears to be having some sort of existential crisis.

>Time to bundle up and... what's within walking distance?
Your place is pretty central, only five minutes from the town square. The library and coffee shop are open right now, and at noon so will the pub. Your office is a bit further from the town center, since you and your dad mostly service the even more rural surrounding areas, but you could be there in about 30 if you hustle. Or 5, with the van. It's not that you can't drive, just, the courts say you shouldn't... It's a long story.

So the 24 hour missing person rule is a myth. Also, the sheriff is an asshole. Here's what you do:

1.) Insist on a report being formally filed. They are legally obligated to take your report. Go there to do it. If they refuse, say “Please document that you are refusing to take a report."

2. Report it to the State Police and the Highway Patrol, as well as the neighboring counties, and local city and town police that's nearby.

3. If this doesn't work, report what the police aren't doing to the State Attorney General's Office, and complain to the County Board and Commissioners that the Sheriff isn't doing his job.

Also, talk to all the neighbors and any family, and nearby churches and civic groups. Get something coordinated if you are going to start searching.

Well shit.

Say, have you checked his room?
I dont thimk he'll be in there but what he had or took with him could give you a clue onwhere hes got to.
Like, if the crossbow is missing.
After that might wanna check the van to see if any gear is out for use.

If there are unexplained smoke plumes from the base of a mountain soon after someone goes missing, chances are that missing person made the fire to signal for help. You could try bringing that up with the police, or if that doesn't work, get someone else to go out with you to check.

You're having a hard time keeping your mind off your dad.

>They are legally obligated to take your report. Go there to do it. If they refuse, say “Please document that you are refusing to take a report."

Bad things don't happen here, so you understand Bugg's flippance, but you wish he'd take this seriously. Unfortunately, you spend most of your time either in the woods or watching cable. You don't know your rights, beyond those to a lawyer and remain silent, and as far as you're concerned law enforcement has your best interests at heart. Man, you love cop shows.

Hm. What would Columbo do?

>Chances are that missing person made the fire to signal for help.
Wolf mountain isn't exactly close, but if he found himself there you guess the fires could have been his doing. It's exactly what he tells you to do should you ever get stranded, at least. But why would he be out there?

>Talk to all the neighbors and any family.
Maybe someone else might know something. You're not sure who to ask for help- with no family to speak of but Pops, and your old friend group managing to 'get the hell out of this town' like you used to talk about, you're pretty isolated here.

You post in the Facebook group asking if anyone's seen your dad. It might be worth asking the tavern staff and regulars for leads too, when it opens. Dad spends a fair amount of time there.

>Say, have you checked his room?
You enter his bedroom, trying not to make eye contact with any of his trophies.

There's some paperwork scattered on his desk, but you can't find his wallet or keys amongst it. His jacket is missing from the closet, too. Looks like he left home of his own accord.

>After that might wanna check the van to see if any gear is out for use.
You keep most of your gear in the trailer by the office, but you figure it's worth checking the van anyway. For some reason, the door isn't locked when you open-

Huh.

What the hell happened here? He doesn't usually keep animals in the van unless they're all the way dead, and he usually cleans it after transport.

>No doubt the wildlife have taken him as revenge. Better stock up on supplies before they come for you next.

There's a good chance something big is on the loose. This might fall under your jurisdiction after all.

Bugg's office and yours are at opposite ends of town. Would you rather arm yourself, or try to recruit the sheriff's help again? Or is there something you might be missing, here..?

Holy hell.
That looks like someone tried to transport a dead bear that wasnt all the way dead, woke up and went crazy.

Is... is that the kinda thing hed get up to?

No. 1113823 ID: fd169b

Well first off, you're the animal expert. Can you identify the claw marks? Any scraps of fur or other signs in the van? Knowing what kind of animal would be helpful.
>>
No. 1113828 ID: 202a8d

take a picture with your phone as proof of why you're worried than look inside the van for fur or some kind of clue of what kind of animal did that.
>>

Taking pictures of that mess is probably a good idea. After that, find something to arm yourself with and show Sheriff Bugg what you might be dealing with.
