So here we are. Out in the middle of nowhere, freezing our asses off.

:shera: "Where is that old fart? He was supposed to be here an hour ago."

:rynh: "He said he forgot something and would meet us out here. He'd better not have forgotten that too."

We could wait inside, but it might be trapped or collapsing or a haunted pit of demon hate, so we probably want to know about any surprises before going in.

:thodren: "Is that him? I hear a rider, but I also hear something else."

I can hear it, too. It's definitely a horse and some kind of weird cackling and whooping... Oh gods, damn it all.

:mel: "Sorry to keep you waiting. I met someone along the way and kind of got sidetracked."

Sure enough, here he comes and he's got a pack of gnolls running him down. It this kind of unexpected element that keeps things exciting. Ngh...

:rynh: "Damn it, old man! You're not paying us for this!"

The pack is bearing down on him and he's bearing down on us, that means the pack is bearing down on us. Getting ripped apart by gnolls is not a fun time.
:gustav: "Might I suggest we move this inside. Now."

:mel: "Good head on ya', boy! Just give me a minute!"

We're off to a good start.

think if we had dagnyr he could tell them them to shove off? probably not.

anyway, yeah chokepoint, find one.
>>
No. 292113 ID: 7927a7

You could probably collapse the entrance if you use earth magic to weaken the mortar and everyone else hits it with whatever they've got, but it could be better to intimidate the gnolls in the long run.

You've known Dagnyr for a long time. How does he react to serious threats? Does he go away to find something easier to do (scavenger thinking) or does that just make him more determined and crafty? What I mean is that if you barricade the door then the gnolls could just wait outside or find another way in, but if you find a chokepoint, burn their whiskers with firebreath and Thodren fills the entrance with meathuge then they might just think "oh fuck this just isn't worth it".

Option C is go inside and leave the horse for the gnolls.

>Punch gnoll in snout to establish dominance.

This is more of Thodren's department and that has to hurt. We fall back into the structure, waiting just long enough for the old man to get off his horse and rush inside. The gnolls begin swarming around the door and there's probably too many to deal with in a fight.
>>
No. 292362 ID: e02378

okay back away into the structure a bit then shoot a blast of flame at the door when they try to swarm it. just a quick burst. wait a second for them to try again then another burst then run. they wont know how many times you can do that so they will be cautious about chasing you in because they don't want to be roasted.

We hurry inside. This whole place is crumbling and dusty, but the gnolls are still milling around outside. They seem a little wary to rush in, but they might get brave at anytime.

:mel: "Oh my, this is a bit of a problem, isn't it? At least the cost of hiring you was well worth it."

hmmm... the ceiling over thodren looks weak. breaking that pillar would probably collapse that section. and just that section because if you look up you will see they are already separated.

That might work and we wouldn't have to collapse the entryway. It might take time though.

:thodren:"Run."
Everyone scrambles to get into the next room as Thodren knocks down the pillar and the whole ceiling comes crashing down, along with a huge pile of debris from upstairs.

After the dust clears we can see we're in a large, mostly empty room with a long stairway leading up. There's not much here but some garbage and dirt.

:mel:"Ye gods, that was a little excessive. Could you try to preserve the structure? Besides this being a historical site, I'd rather not have the whole blasted place fall in on us."

:thodren:"It worked didn't it?"
:rynh:"Well, they can't chase us, so I guess we're good. Let's just try not to do that anymore."

The ruins are dark, cold and apparently stripped of anything valuable. I wonder why he's so interested in exploring them.
:rynh:"Alright, old man. What's the deal here? This place looks gutted."
:mel:"Pfft... Looters only take what's easy to reach. I'm sure there's something of interest here. People don't go to the effort to build things like this, then abandon them for no reason. I want to find out why. War, pestilence, plague, giant monsters, swirling demonic hellportals. All kinds of possibilities. My name is Melgathander, by the way, you all can just call me Mel, for simplicity's sake."
:gustav:"You're Melgathander? I read your book on the ruins of Garaf Tiras. It was rather interesting."

If there were three doors, then it would make sense to blow out the candle above the locked one to open it, but in this case there are three candles and one door (unless this connects to other rooms) so one would assume that lighting them all would unlock this door.

Of course, there are many other possible options that could be plausible(e.g it actually does need a key, supported by the fact that it has a keyhole), but lacking the rest of the puzzle (something we should check out) this is the best we can come up with currently.

And of course it never hurts to try

Mel seems a bit more enthusiastic about this whole thing.
:mel:"No matter. That sealed door is what has me excited. It's still locked after all this time, that means there could be a treasure trove behind it and the key is likely still here."

I head upstairs with Shera and enter an old bedroom. All the fabrics are frayed and ripped up and bits of walls and ceiling have crumbled down.

:shera:"What's the matter? Scared? Go on."

"Pfft... You're the one hiding behind me."

:shera:"I'm not hiding. I'm taking advantage of cover."

"Wimp."

Well, there might be something in here.

The kobold whines and scampers back upstairs, while the one I'm still holding tries to squirm free.

It's kind of fun to intimidate others, but I can't help but feel like kind of an asshole for this.

Throwing others in front of myself to use them as a meat shield seems kind of evil. I'm not a totally psychopath. I'll just intimidate them into getting the key. That's good enough for now.

You're already getting what you want, you can go easier on her now. Just smile normally and promise you aren't going to eat her, let her down a bit and pat her on the head.

The thing about being intimidating is you don't have to be that way all the time, and if you show you can be halfway nice and reasonable you can get even more out of it. Constant terror just makes them run away or turn on you and just generally fuck up.

You might also want to mention that running isn't a good idea anyway, seeing how the outside of the place is now crawling with hungry, pissed off gnolls.

I'm not a kobold or a dragon, I'm a hybrid of the two. So, I guess I'm kind of one of them, but I'm also one of the things that usually rule them and kobolds are supposed to be related to dragons somehow... There's probably weird fractions involved here.
Anyway, I don't think they need to get involved. We've got the key, at least.

>Just think, Rynh. Your mother fucked one of these things to make you.
That's usually how it works and judging from how she acts, a kobold is probably as much beneath her as a human or dwarf or anything else.

>how were they making the skull's eyes glow?
It just looked like a candle and a deer skull.

I don't like how that one looks like it's crouched in preparation for a pounce. I'm pretty sure it's undead, because it seems unlikely anyone would die like that.

I'd say move up and try to dragon breath that doorway, and have Shera keep an eye on the ledge-sitter in case it makes a move.

Maybe. But I don't know if this is the best time to announce to everything in the area that we're here.

Shera tries to get my attention while I move toward the dark doorway. "Psst... That thing is moving around over there. Just so you know."

The motionless one is standing up and whatever's in the dark is moving around back there. I don't know if they sense us or if they're just moving around on their own at random. I'll probably just assume they want to eat us.

"Don't worry.", I say. "Fighting fair is always the last resort."

That ghoul is climbing up the wall and whatever was in the dark is peeking out now. I have no idea what it is. Something bad, I would think.

Can Shera perhaps get the climbing ghoul in the arm? If a tendon or muscle is severed then it probably won't be able to get up the ledge.

Otherwise give the thing in the doorway a surprise attack. See if you can pull it sideways over the ledge into the chasm. Then start pulling back, perhaps using covering fire.

I try to break the chair over the thing creeping out of the hallway, but it's not solid enough to make contact with. Shera leaps the gap and grabs the ghoul by the ankle. "Come on, get your rotten ass down here!".

First off don't let it touch you. Only dodge, don't try to block. Tell Shera the same.

Now, since it seems more or less immune to chair based attacks we need to try something different. First off is the sword, if it's vulnerable to iron then the sword might work a little bit, although there might not be enough pure iron. Anyway, after the sword comes energy based attacks, we can start with fire and then try lightning. If none of those work then we should probably fall back to Gustav and tell him we have a ghost problem and ask who we're gonna call.

I'm going to hack this little fucker in half if it's the last thing I do! It just won't sit still enough for me to score a solid hit. It's like it's sole purpose is to be an aggravating little shit.

You can flail about with magic *and* swordsmanship at the same time. Make it dodge your magic in order to smack it with your sword. Or, since you nicked it with your sword once already, charge your sword with lightning so it empties the charge into it if you even so much as nick it again.

I know your ice magic isn't your strong point, but if you can pull off a spread out freezing effect to slow him down or better yet freeze it to the wall that would be perfect.

Otherwise use earth magic to trap it from below and the sides, and smash from above.

Earth magic up a wall of spikes and the like behind it. Even if its not enough to completely block the passageway, it should slow it down enough that you can hack it to bits as it tries to negotiate it's way around them.

"It's probably for the best. Liches are nasty customers. Usually unhelpful. Was he wearing anything distinctive? I'll get you to sketch out anything that stood out." He seems pretty calm about this. If a book is going to be written about this ask if you can be included under a pseudonym. As in not by name. If you or he can't think of anything better just suggest "Drala" as in dragon lady :P
If this turns out to be the mistake of the decade then it would be good to not have your name literally written all over it.

What are you going to do with the kobolds? You could give them some coins for being helpful. Then they can buy some food in town or something.

Also consider investing in holy water and stuff that helps kill the undead. There may be a market opening up for that kind of thing real soon... Ask Gustav if he wants to get in on that kind of plan.

Also it's been a while since you tried transforming into anything. Try to surprise Shera by turning into a catperson.
