Faster than light travel is unachievable. Any understanding of physics makes this clear, much to the frustration of many a solar nation. Even methods that seem to cheat around this, such as wormholes, still have their prices to pay to the forces of relativity.

Even so, there remains the optimistic and the obstinate. Those that gaze upon the stars and dream against reality. People who study, work, and sacrifice to escape beyond the impossible void that entraps their solar lands. The reality is that what they want is impossible, and yet they still reach out.

And soon they may find that they’ve grasped something.

Somewhere in the galaxy there exists a place that seems to hold contempt towards conventional physics. Its location is inscrutable and existence unpredictable. Yet any who try to surpass the speed of light inevitably find themselves there, a green sun lost to space and logic. Warping there consumes little energy and seems to bear no effect on the relativity of time. Civilizations that make it to this speck of space find that not only can they warp just as easily back, but also to anywhere else in the native galaxy. Suddenly, not only are neighboring stars within reach, but so are the rest in the visible sky!

It’s difficult to pinpoint who discovered this place first, as a multitude of civilizations inhabit and lay claim to this galactic crossroads. Each trying to gain a foothold, warring in both proxy battles and direct skirmishes. Most who try to engage in all out war find themselves pushed out of this valuable space by all the other factions who would rather lose it all than to secede it to a single entity.

After all, they who control the Nexus controls the galaxy.

That’s where folks like you come in. Dark agents tied to independent organizations under orders from apolitical initiatives funded by unaffiliated coalitions that may or may not have ties with certain governmental groups. You’ve managed to put together your own little enterprise to do the various dirty work and skullduggery available in the Nexus. Right now, you’re trying to hunt down a missing ship that contains some sensitive documents that you’re suppose to purge. Seems like basic corporate politics with some small things getting blown out of proportion. There’s even a small bet among your group as to what benign thing the files are. But either way, you’re getting paid and a job’s a job.

Speaking of jobs, it seems like Teely already managed to get another lined up. In order to put in a bid though, the potential client wants all wizards to fully submit their info. It would be nice if the Nexus was less paranoid about your kind, but you guess that’s a small price to pay for power.

The magic of the nexus is wide and varied, but wizards themselves tend to only come in a few types:
Mitochondriac : Utilizing an eons old partnership, Mitochondriacs manipulate energy not just in their cells but also in the world around them. Able to create temperatures that can melt metals, reduce energy levels to nigh absolute zero and yes, even cast fireball. Tend to be a bit unhinged.
Nanomancer : Wizards who have formed a connection with a swarm of nanomachines. They have the abilities to construct objects, deconstruct obstacles, and occasionally modify materials like alchemists of old. Some have been known to name their nanoswarms.
Virimage : The virimage’s power lies not within themselves but within others. They possess a dark control of the endogenous retroviruses that exist in our DNA. In living subjects, activating this rogue bit of code takes precise and limited utilization. However, in the dead, where there’s no longer any functioning defenses, the retrovirus does what viruses do best: infect, take over, spread. The top virimages are the most mopiest and dramatic wizards you’ll ever see.
Sci-priest : In the nexus, most traditional sciences don’t apply as they should. Most are happy to accept this, but some refuse to give up their empirical world view. Through hard work, study, experimentation, and sheer religious-like belief, these wizards bring sense to a place that’s gone mad. They enforce laws of nature around them, remove the conveniences of the nexus when it suits them, and can even negate the magic of other wizards if they’re strong enough. They’re no fun at parties.

You begin to fill out the form. Its a pretty basic one. You’ve seen its like dozens of times. A birthday there, a checkmark here, and now the last bit of information.

I think we should be a tad unhinged and ready to attack any problem head on, with fire.

I like this idea, if we're actively trying to keep that a secret. A billion nanites in a metaphorical trenchcoat.
